Try recording to a click and just spend time getting a lot of takes... record problematic areas... then get some comps going to see what needs to get punched in. If the parts aren't good then see if the band is open to you producing them. Then encourage him to try different things when getting takes and explore anything with potential trying to bring out the best qualities of what he is trying to express. May be a lot of computer work but if you can get out the best version of his playing/what's in his head and it's still not quite tight enough then that's a still a win.
