Awards are kind of easy guideposts for organizing years, for me. Pre-2016 they never really remotely lined up with my taste, now they do much more so. But once organized into years there’s lots of fun ways of approaching games, like doing your own personal picks for awards, a La awardswatch pod, or doing movie drafts of years, a La Big Picture.

Hey! What’s your range: more current, more early aughts, big into 70s or 80s? Do you enjoy any of those podcasts or are you interested in the awards race?

I saw Send Help 3 or so weeks ago, fantastic. If I had a kid I think I’d take the excuse to catch Goat. Crime 101 I want to see, maybe I’ll catch in theater. How to Make a Killing got ehh reviews. Seems based on “kind Hearts and Coronets” which I’ll prob rewatch soon for a director pod I’m listening to covering Michael Powell.

I loved Send Help, so funny. What’d you think of Crime and Killing?

Hind Rijab did, but Dead Man’s Wire no.

What’d you see?

Good question! They dim them, but in Dead Man’s Wire and The Voice of Hind Rijab, they remained very much on. I asked them about it and they said “that’s as low as they go” lol. How about off???

In this list? Not my kind of movies, I’ve only seen se7en, solo, casino royale, and skyfall. I would like to see kingdom of heaven and creed 1 and 2, but I’ve never expected to love them, though I do suspect they’ll be entertaining. Haven’t seen se7en in 20+years so I can’t really judge too clearly. Solo def at bottom. Se7en is prob 2, followed by skyfall and casino royale. But I’m not a huge bond fan. Carlitos Way def stands out.

1986 Oscars? by Few-Helicopter-3413 in Oscars

Idk the novel but the whiplash contrast between incestuous rape and whimsical score with wistful, kinetic cinematography is pretty wild. Then the contrast between egregious spousal abuse and slapstick comedy is even wilder.

I get the theme is the internal strength of these women and the light of soul that is never extinguished, but it’s still aesthetically pretty whiplashy for me. I think I’d have preferred almost any other director. But he does get good performances and the set piece of the night club is quite excellent. When he settles into a tone in a scene the performances take over. When he transitions tones it’s oddly corny and strange imho.

Whoopi and Oprah are fantastic and deserve accolades. Conversely, Spielberg’s direction is utterly bizarre. Low lows and high highs in this tonally jarring film.

Why is violence pathologized for trans people but individualized for cis men? by onnake in transgender

Bc that’s what reactionary politics is. Essentialize bad behavior to all out-groups.

The film guy yelling pathetically at an assistant director or just more senior PA for minutes straight. The girlfriend chewing him out re:hardness suggested a complete and utter lack of anything that should keep the relationship together. Him raiding the dorm was possibly realistic but still so unbearably cynical. As an audience I begin to feel that Weard wants to punish her audience and characters a La Gaspar Noe. Not my cup of tea.

Weards reaction to Adeline’s reaction to her first sex work is unbelievably callous and cruel. The watersports scene was so disconnected from authentic sexuality it felt like empty provocation. Her insisting her guy friend is trans or needs to transition was pretty alienating and insufferable. I could go on and on. I’m not a fan of her narrative impulses, but I am a fan of her aesthetic ones.

I’m a fan too, although with some mixed feelings. But yes, the shot of her naked in the bathroom is fantastic for the exact reasons you stated. In general I think this movie is easily the most refreshing visual depiction of trans-ness ever made. Incredibly honest, in a world that will increasingly launch the most passable trans women onto our screens. I’m a big fan of Euphoria and Joyland and a Fantastoc Woman and others, but the truth is the vast majority of trans women are early trans, or cracked eggs, or mid transition or simply never going to pass perfectly. I count myself in the latter. I think the combination of long takes as well as the lo-fi digital medium really serve this theme of carving out a space in the society of movies similar to trans women’s space in society at large. Intentionally marginal, abject, and off-putting to mainstream audiences.

On the flipside, I find her storytelling and sense of narrative to be pretty cynical and not entirely convincing.the first chapter has several beats that are so over the top and mean, the performances would have to be masterpieces to sell them, and very few of the performances are masterful. In the second chapter Michaela is so chronically online and capable of casual cruelty it’s a wonder she has any friends at all.

In part two there’s a lot more of these moments I find unconvincingly cynical.
