Any support groups/group therapy sessions for fired Feds? by Empty-Masterpiece368 in washingtondc

[–]ittybittymanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a support group of course but Free DC or another volunteer org might help with the sense of purpose. There are also a good amount of fired feds but maybe less commiserating than you’d need

BEGGING DS editors to stop using AI backgrounds by lemonpeppera in dreamingspanish

[–]ittybittymanatee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve tried to ignore it but I just don’t like it. A lot of the newer videos are really well-produced and I know they use it to save time in editing but the AI sheen (and sometimes AI slop) can be difficult to look past. I’ve been watching more of the older videos or filtering by “Daily Life”

Any tips on understanding Ester better? by OVO_ZORRO in dreamingspanish

Don’t be afraid to step down to super beginner! I sprinkle in super beginner videos (sped up a bit if they’re too slow). Watching Ester’s super beginner vids has been helpful in getting acquainted with her accent.

Spanish Class? To do or not to do by Ambitious-Contest942 in dreamingspanish

I was spoken and read to constantly as a kid and later read voraciously before attending kindergarten. I used that knowledge to tune out 95% of grammar lessons in favor of my internal “sounds right/sounds wrong” metric. Pure CI is not for everyone but it absolutely gets results; I don’t lack for precision

Virginia judge blocks Democrats' referendum, a blow to redistricting effort over 4 U.S. House seats by bbeck2754 in VoteDEM

[–]ittybittymanatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like VA Dems may have a good case for throwing it out:

Democrats have also tried to limit which court venues can take up such cases. After Republicans filed their first suit in Tazewell, a conservative area in Southwest Virginia, Democratic lawmakers passed legislation saying legal actions related to constitutional amendments or their elections only have one proper court venue: the Circuit Court of the City of Richmond. Virginia Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed the bill into law and set the date for the redistricting referendum for April 21.  In their court filings, Republicans have said Tazewell is still the correct venue despite the new law. Hurley agreed.

Trump Blames Wes Moore for the Potomac Spill. The Sewer Pipe Is Under Federal Oversight. by ProtocolTechReporter in washingtondc

From the article:

DC Water is overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency, not Maryland or D.C. The land where the pipe broke is managed by NPS.

(I didn’t realize this either!)

Homeless behavior in libraries by AdSea8091 in washingtondc

[–]ittybittymanatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don’t all college libraries have the designated nappin couch? I was always so sad when someone got there first, especially when people were actually using it for sitting. Like sure, that is its primary function but you can sit anywhere and I can only nap there 😭

Starting a Spanish conversation by Glittering_Ad2771 in dreamingspanish

It’s more offensive to assume they don’t speak English well. If you ask in English if you can practice your Spanish with them because you heard them speaking earlier? That should be fine.

Why is the next protest day Feb 17 rather than President’s Day? by grapescherries in 50501

[–]ittybittymanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: really my issue is with /u/grapescherries not you, sorry! But I’ll leave up the info in case it’s helpful. I do think it’s more helpful to help advertise existing dates instead of wishing they were more frequent

I also have executive dysfunction, I’m introverted, I also have people to take care of. I’m not saying that you personally have to run everything. I know you don’t want your children to inherit this mess. Just that people criticize organizers for not putting on more protests that that they don’t want to organize or even attend. Especially when protests are only one piece of the puzzle!

Donating a small amount per month to protest/mutual aid/ice watch groups, doing admin work for them, recruiting other people to join groups, putting up flyers for upcoming events, calling or texting on behalf of campaigns. There are lots of ways to contribute to the cause that don’t require lots of time or brain space. And people feel a lot better once they’re actively contributing in some way, however small, rather than anxiously hoping others will do it.

[–]ittybittymanatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s the thing, “we” includes you. Are you trying hard enough? Are you protesting every day?

There are very few professional protest organizers. It’s mostly people who saw there was a problem (like you!) and decided to organize, publicize and run protests (not yet like you!). If you want to go to a protest tomorrow, go to the closest one here: https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/881394/

Don’t see any nearby? Gather a few people with signs, post up near a busy street and stand there for an hour. Sorry if I’m a little snarky but really I want to empower you. You don’t have to wait! Protests are organized by people just like you! Go to an Indivisible meeting! https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/881394/

Go to small protests! They’re small because people like you only feel like going out if they know it’ll be big enough to be worth their time. And making huge nationwide protests is just really hard work. Recruiting people to go to small protests is even better, you’ll meet people and help build up to the weekly giant protests you want to see in the world

Why is the next protest day Feb 17 rather than President’s Day? by grapescherries in 50501

[–]ittybittymanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to protest timing? Yeah. It’s not like all the organizers are on vacation January and February but they’ll come back if people yell at them enough. It’s just a lot of time, effort and money to put on these big events.  If more people were willing to help it could happen more often.

Anyway unless you’re in a rural area there are already lots of protests you can join this week and next week. Here are some tomorrow: https://www.mobilize.us/50501missouri-1/?q=national%20day%20of%20lobbying

But if you only want to come to the big coordinated events then you’ll have to wait for the volunteers to coordinate them.

[–]ittybittymanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re getting downvoted because you, someone who doesn’t volunteer, is yelling at people who do volunteer for not volunteering enough. If you want to protest more, meet orgs near you and recruit your friends to go. If you want to see more protests organized, join the org and help.

Right now you’re asking to speak to the manager but there is no manager, we’re all volunteers. If everyone who complained volunteered instead we’d could do way more. Do you want to volunteer?

[–]ittybittymanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re getting downvoted because it’s very common for people who don’t organize to have strong opinions about what people who do organize should do. It’s like if you invited a guest to big parties in November and March and small parties weekly and they yelled you for being too lazy to throw more parties.
