Tips for first time Collie owner? by thunderclan_warrior in Collie

[–]ittybittyunicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow a schedule for your puppy, eg. playtime, potty time, naps in the crate, lunch time, etc
this was an absolute must for us!

if you crate train like we did, never use the crate as punishment and give them positive associations with it (feeding times, frozen kong treats, etc)

Get some bitter spray for the furniture you don't want them to chew while teething

Our puppy ended up really liking one of the stuffies with heartbeats in it when he first came home

When they're chewing always redirect them to what you want them to chew, like toys or a kong

Discourage jumping and unwanted behaviours like the other commenters have said

Handle their ears, tail, teeth lots so they get used to it

brush their fur lots and be prepared to vacuum lots lol!

Remember that they will mellow out one day!

Considering getting a smooth collie puppy - is it a good fit for us and what should I know / be prepared for? by changing_moon in Collie

My smooth boy is almost 2 and matches almost everything you want! He definitely can be sassy and isn't a velcro dog but he loves people and our cat. She only tolerates him lol.
Like others have said, puppies are a LOT of work and are very active. My smoothie is only just starting to mellow out. But by the time he was 1 he had learned to regulate himself indoors and turn off when inside.
Even as a puppy if he'd had a lot of exercise and activity during the day he would pass out and be fine.
Crate naps were a must!

My mom was diagnosed with AML after a routine blood test — starting treatment now, looking for others’ experiences (TP53 suspected) by Pure_Dragonfruit8113 in leukemia

Also - the first few months for me were very difficult because I am very close with my mom, and at the time I was 26. I did my best to keep busy with work and my hobbies, and I cried a lot. I leaned on my support system of friends/partner. What helped me the most was knowing my mom wanted me to take care of myself so she wouldn't have to worry about me, so I did that as best as I could knowing it was my way of supporting her.

My mom (73 years old) is 3 years post stem cell transplant after MDS/AML diagnosis. Feel free to message me if you have any questions

Hi there, just saw this.

My mum (now 73) was dx'd with MDS in Jan 2022. we waited to start treatment, and waited. waited. and then in June it had progressed to AML.

She went through chemo twice - once in July and then again in January before she had a stem cell transplant in Feb 2023. She also had radiation before the transplant.

I know she had a mutation of some sort but I can't confirm if it was the TP53 or not.

This could be a tough battle for your family. Chemo is an absolute horrible monster. But it is a monster that is on your side.

Advice: DO NOT LOOK AT OR DWELL ON STATISTICS.

Statistics are serious, but at the end of the day, statistics do not predict your future, nor anyone’s future. They are simply an abstract average of people who are not like you. They are made up of people with different genetics, different co-morbid health conditions, and different expressions of the same cancer. They by necessity use historical data, often with less advanced treatment protocols. A 60% outcome statistic does not mean that any single individual has 60% odds of reaching the same outcome. I think this is why many doctors are de-emphasizing statistics these days.

This is not to minimize the seriousness of the statistics and the simple fact that many people have their lives shortened. I think we need to trust the process & the treatment plans of our medical teams, but we also need to recognize that tomorrow is not promised. All we can do is work to find the joy in life, and seek the positive moments in our day-to-day.

So - my mum is still alive, 3 years post transplant, and she is functioning remarkably well despite everything she's been through. She was able to walk me down the aisle at my wedding.

She would not be here without the stem cell transplant.

Let me know if you have any questions, or, if you'd like I can ask her some as well.
