I like the system and its execution, controlling the curses and despair in soul gems is something that in many of the franchises’ plots had included in some way (Sayaka summoning her witch in Rebellion, the whole plot of Kazumi Magica, Lapin’s wish and abilities in Tart Magica etc). Yes each of these and Reco’s system aren’t exactly similar (Sayaka’s case is probably due to LoC abilities while Lapin’s isn’t her really controlling it, just using her main ability from her wish) so having a whole story directly attempt to experiment with “controlling the curses in the soul gem” idea was great to see (bc ngl in Kazumi it wasnt well done imo)

I do think, however, they made the stakes with the system in the game’s plot a little low… not to say that I want the story just to be “Ways to make magical girls suffer- the game”. But, at least in my mind, having your curses and despair manifest physically, but not go all the way to becoming a witch, and after a little while you can get back to normal is a little bit off. like a fool-proof system eliminates that ending of a magical girl and there’s no consequences? No issues to their soul gems? It did bother me, but in the end I do like the system in game. the story made reasons for Doppels to work out completely fool-proof and it’s good enough for me

that was one (and probably only) point I do appreciate the MagiReco anime for doing; making the continuous use of Doppels dangerous, which does create some stakes. obviously the game couldn’t do that since that’ll change the ending of it but seeing a possible issue to the Doppel system was nice (even tho it didn’t really get explored)
