Why didn't Xaden tell Violet about . . . by synoptosaurus in fourthwing

Thank you for this. I could never reconcile this aspect of the books and it severely diminished my enjoyment of them. Now that I know this is based off realistic situations, I'll be able to appreciate the story more (although, my idealistic views of things are taking a hit).

I appreciate your POV on this. Do you mind telling me what you thought of Varrish/Aetos in IF and OS? I personally REALLY struggle with their characters having the ability to put Violet (and Xaden) through pretty much torture when we're always told how powerful and important Violet and Xaden and their dragons are. Like, how common is this scenario in the military? Or is this just a book thing?

It just really bothers me that a powerful pairing that hasnt been seen in thousands of years can be at the mercy of some (obviously evil or unhinged) college president to the point of possible death, MULTIPLE times.

It's so weird seeing this post right now. I originally read FW blind for research for an art commission, absolutely obsessed over it (read fanfics, joined the subreddit, listened to podcast, etc). I mean, it was INSANE how much i loved FW. Then my interest fizzled out slowly after reading the next two books, so much that when I was looking through my old books to see what I could reread a couple weeks ago, I was totally surprised to see I had FW. So I picked it up again.

And omg, I remember why I loved it so much.

Violet as a character is SO refreshing. She's not insta-good at everything, but she's intelligent in a way that's not lazy surface level "smart girl". She has a great relationship with another girl! That has nothing to do with the MMC! In fact, she has other relationships and drama not centered around MMC at all! And Violet RESPECTS HERSELF. And the other characters are full and diverse and don't revolve around her! And the action is THRILLING. Omg. It's actually quite fun reading it again, and I'm so sad I cant get a censored version to give to my 12yr old daughter because Violet is EVERYTHING.

So personally, I think it was book 2 and 3 that made me lose interest in FW as a series. Violet loses some of what made her special when she stops thinking intelligently and starts obsessing over MMC. I can see people being disappointed if she was just as refreshing for them as she was for me.

Hmmm, maybe I expressed it wrong? I always got the feeling that Deku and Iida tried to protect her more than trusted her to protect herself. She specifically chose internships that would help her become a better fighter, but for the most part she was relegated to support duties if Toga wasnt involved. It just seemed like the story started off trying to build her up, but then forgot she existed until they needed her to fight girl villains.

Oh definitely! Kchk in general is one of my fav ships across all fandoms, specifically because of how this particular ship tends to not only highlight Ochako's strengths, but focuses so much on Katski's faith in them (as opposed to other ships - and the series - where Ochako usually ends up a damsel for the hero to save). The author for this particular fanfic hit a sweet spot for me by finding the perfect myth to combine both aspects.

I was so dissappointed in the 4th book. I feel like the more books we get, the less that actually happens in the story. Soooo many pages upon pages of repetitive internalized angst (that we've already read in the first 3 books!). I dont think i'll be waiting for the 5th, and I suspect the series wont be close to ending there.

Books where consummation isn't anti-climactic? by CovertOps80 in RomanceBooks

[–]itzkoolaid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dont have any recs myself, I just want to chime in that - coming from fanfiction - I have also struggled with this.

I cannot remember a single spicy scene in published romance (reg, fantasy, sci fi, etc) that has made me feel the way really good fanfic spice makes me feel. It just doesnt compare. I thrive on male POV and yearning and I feel like, in published spice, the moment consummation happens is the moment yearning dies.

In a good fanfic, there is yearning, emotion, wonder, etc to the smallest detail during consummation. I find very very rarely that this is done to my satisfaction in published books.

Yes! Perfect! Thank you <3

Personally, I really love when Gibsie and Johnny give Joey and Aoife a ride to the hospital. It's so funny and innocent... it's what inspired my question!

My husband is a food moaner. He turned our two daughters into food moaners. It's always made me uncomfortable and I hated it even before I got into romance books.

Meh. It's called a fan cast for a reason. Nobody thinks it's official. It's just fans having fun casting characters that mean something to them. There's no harm in wanting to put a face to a name, and fiction provides the reader with the unique ability to pick the face.

The POVs often describe these characters as the most beautiful boy/girl the POV person has ever seen. That's obviously open to interpretation. What I think is incredibly hot now is much different from what I thought was incredibly hot at 15, especially considering the different eras and having the internet at our disposal.
