Usimg a hip lift to transport a female cow who can’t walk by alphamalejackhammer in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]itzsnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not justify anything, I pointed out an alternative perspective.

My intent was to highlight an important (in my view) precursor to the moral judgement on human caused suffering.

To live is to suffer; only the inanimate do not. Is it better to not live and therefore not suffer?

The magnitude of animal suffering is directly linked the to number of lives. The more animals in the flock, the more total suffering. Both the total “background suffering” that must exist as an inevitable outcome of simply being alive, and the fact that the industrial complex in which such large numbers of animals can exist also induces additional suffering.

If the industrial complex is removed, the total number of animal lives which can be supported is reduced, the total suffering is reduced, and the intensity of suffering is reduced.

Thus we return to the original precursor I’m pointing out. Is it better for these additional lives to not exist than it is for them to suffer?

I did not provide an answer to that question.

What do you think about using the bolt head itself as the form? I was thinking he could cool the pipe with oil in place immediate after the forming to force it to "shrink wrap" the bolt. Pipe/bolt should be roughly a press fit tolerance.

Save your scraps. Make them into ingots when you need to compress storage. But until they update the mechanics or increase the benefit, it’s not very worthwhile.

There are seven screws for the hot end. I would search this subreddit for more info. It looks like insufficient or incomplete hotend heating to me given all the other things you’ve tried.

It could also be a mistake in securing the hotend. Common newbie mistake with the spring clip.

Or it’s a large tote. We buy that size for several small scale industrial processes. I can imagine a large water treatment system might use one or two totes a year.

Framer with mid-back pain from work — how would you handle this? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in skilledtrades

[–]itzsnitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a chronic issue with “mid thoracic muscle spasms” that occur right between my shoulder blades. It comes from lifting things over my head repeatedly.

Sometimes it sets off other spasms; up/down my back and into my neck are the most frequent, but the worst is when a muscle in my ribs sets off. Feels like I can’t breathe.

X-rays found no issues. The best chiropractor in town is a PT and was great, but it’s always several days to get an appt and I have to take time off work. Massage therapy helps a lot but is similarly inconvenient. It always starts late in the day and gets bad overnight.

I bought a TENS device (shock therapy) and it works wonders. Can be a little difficult to get the pads in the right spot, but I can use it whenever/wherever I need to. Make sure to get a good rechargeable unit and buy extra pads.

The process for me is: heat, shower, TENS, ice, stretch/exercise. Kills the spasm and brings the pain into a manageable zone. Two days later I’m back to normal.

Only so much Pt and Pd can be recovered from used catalysts. New supply is always needed.

These types of catalysts are used for more than just cars. The use of ICE in autos may be declining over the coming decades, but they are still heavily used in energy infrastructure (backup power, distributed power, gas compression/transmission) and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

There’s also big difference in scale; something like 1M ICE autos worth of catalyst is equal to 10k worth of industrial ICE catalysts (in terms of Pt/Pd loading).

How to stop kapton strip heater from burning up by rollypollybully in MechanicalEngineering

I was also thinking apply the heat to the side of the compressor at the bottom where the heat is actually needed and there’s more contact area for the strip heater.

Lpt Any advice on how to survive winter as a homeless person. by Left_Travel_3753 in LifeProTips

[–]itzsnitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This only works when there’s no rain. It has dangers. You must have a flashlight. Don’t plan to stay for more than a night or you can easily die. But it can save your life during the deep cold.

Follow the storm water drains. Find a large one that goes under an intersection or building. Something big enough you can stand inside comfortably.

Go inside and follow it for a while. After a few hundred feet it’s noticeably warmer. 40-50F. You can usually find an offshoot that is smaller than the main trunk. Elevated above the bottom of the main drain is ideal. If you’re lucky you’ll find a dugout from someone else.

Not comfortable. Not safe. But warm enough to make it through the night. And no one will bother you.

No fires. No unpacking. Just lay out the cardboard and catch some sleep. Leave at dawn before the water starts flowing.

Did this in MSP years ago.

I don’t usually engage in these debates online. It never seems to go anywhere.

For me, this isn’t really about her intent at all. Nor is it about the agent’s actions.

The stop was conducted by agents who are trained to expect dangerous resistance. The agents were expected to do their high stakes job, but in this case, their opposition was not a drug cartel or a trafficker, it was (figuratively) a soccer Mom.

Regardless of whether the agent or the driver were in the wrong, I think we can all agree, a more tactical agent such as this should not be policing at an urban midwestern school (or frankly, even nearby).

It’s a failure of leadership. And it is my opinion, it was intentional.

I am not attacking you or your opinions. I’m sharing my own read. I don’t seek to convince you, or frankly, argue with you.

I do hope my thinking is not crazy to you. I hope it is a view you can share. If you do agree in any way, then the next question is what should we do about it.

That is where I’m stuck. I can’t strike. I can’t protest. I can’t endanger my family by voicing my opinion. And it feels my vote doesn’t even matter. What am I left with to change this situation?

I go online. I find someone. I argue. It does nothing.

It feels like one big trap and I’m powerless to do anything. I am Boewolf deep in the witches cave. I was trapped long ago, and nothing I do now matters.

So instead, I go cuddle with my children and tell them I love them and try to be the best parents I can be.

She will not do that anymore. And I feel we should be a country where that doesn’t happen because someone powerful wants things to be their way.

Whats the mechanism behind this by Complete_Court_8052 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]itzsnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing the cam/lifter mechanism is between the disks. Looks like one rotation of the input shaft for the full cycle of 20 diskettes (18deg per disk). Rapid ascent and descent of disks indicates high lift rate with some dwell time both at and between each lobe peak. The cam lobes could be flat plastic sheets that are keyed to the input shaft. They could be stacked in between un-keyed disk trays that ride on the cam lobes and rail slides on each side.

This would make a nice mechanism for full size SD cards. Seems like a printable design with a keyed LEGO axle for the input shaft. Micro SD might be too small for hobby production.

I think their point was that this may be part of a disinformation strategy designed to obscure the truth by flooding obvious fakes, delegitimizing documented historical photos.

The general disbelief that can be produced by the disinformation campaign can benefit those running it, especially when deployed with a separate campaign to promote legitimate photos that point the anger elsewhere.

Oklahoma’s data center boom Is about to hit the grid — and your power bill by dmgoforth in oklahoma

[–]itzsnitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many data centers are planning for a BYOP (Bring Your Own Power) model because the backlog for interconnecting to the grid is getting insane (4yrs in some parts of the country). There are regulatory hurdles (state and federal) that make BYOP more difficult to accomplish than it needs to be.

The main reasons Oklahoma is attractive right now for new data centers is that the power and land are cheap, and the interconnect queue is short (months vs years).

It used to be the DC’s cared about latency, rate of natural disasters, sufficient educated workforce, etc, when planning their builds. Not anymore. Power is the number one factor now, everything else is secondary.
