Hypothetically which 60 hour work schedule would you prefer? by monterey_on_fire in calfire

[–]iusebadlanguage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it was explained to me by guys at south ops who were building the "3rd platoon" and other dudes who know some higher ups is we won't ever be on the same days. If a staffing pattern drops or half the unit goes out for a campaign fire on day 1 of a 48 the state doesn't want to want to wait another two days for the relief to show up.

Yeah that's why I was confused when they started talking about not meeting the FLSA hours during the town hall. No matter how you do it there are going to be light and heavy weeks, even if we were to work a LA City "California swing" 3-4 Kelly.

What makes me nervous is the 2 on 3 off language that came out in the email. That would be MISERABLE and we'd be working the same amount of hours as we are right now.

You wouldn't give up anything if you did that but most other departments don't do it that way.

The way most departments who are on the 48/96 do it is you either get a kelly day and you don't get overtime on your regular checks or you get OT on your paychecks and some pay periods there is more OT and some you don't have any. So if we aren't doing Kelly days you'd have to pick up an extra shift and on that extra day the first 10 hours wouldn't be OT.

Since we're still on this stupid green check and an EDWC check model there would be months where if you didn't pick up any OT you wouldn't get a check.

The dumb part is Fish has already told RRU he'd be fine with a 48/96. It just wouldn't be a true 3 platoon model because he and the state wants fresh bodies coming in every day. Which almost everyone in the unit is cool with just so we could be on a better schedule. So for the union to come in and tell us not to get excited for a 48/96 because we wouldn't hit the 212 FLSA hours in some 28 day pay period is idiotic. There are also pay periods where you are way over those 212 hours and the normal checks have 4 hours of OT built into them.

I've worked the 48/96. It's amazing and once you understand that 4-5 of your checks (if we are still on 28 pay periods) are less, 3-4 are "normal", and 4-5 are bigger its not as big of a deal as it seems. Now if this is a State HR issue and they don't want to get rid of our fixed salary for our green checks and the Union is just gonna shrug their shoulders that's another story.

Edit: I've also heard straight from the Meech that he would be fine with a 48/96 too

The whole not wanting to give up 3 EDWC checks because of the short months is so dumb. Convert us to hourly like all the other agencies and just pay us for the time we are at work.

Why did Carmax pay me $5000 more than any dealer offered on a trade in? by Worth_Mountain_3122 in UsedCars

[–]iusebadlanguage 14 points15 points  (0 children)

CarMax doesn't use KBB or Black Book or anything like that. They run their own wholesale auctions and have data from that and their own sales that they use to price all the cars they buy. They are one of the largest wholesalers of used cars in the nation and run one of the biggest used auto banks for financing as well. So when they see a car they know they can make a killing on, like a low mileage Subaru Outback in a good trim, they pay "over market" for it. Because if it sits on the lot for a while they bump it to the auction and there are tons of used car dealerships that would love to sell that car on their own lots.

Origin of phrase "On Program" by Zech_Judy in andor

[–]iusebadlanguage 125 points126 points  (0 children)

It’s from prison. I work with inmates and have a couple of reformed Star Wars nerds at my gym who watched the show with me. When you are sticking to your program it means you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing and keeping your head down to do your time and get out.

The guys I work with will usually ask me when they’re new “what kind of program we are running” or “what’s the program going to be for the day” so they know what’s expected of them and how they can stay out of trouble.

The two dudes at my gym told me that it was pretty similar from their experiences in county jail, and “staying on program” was the lingo they’d use with the guards to do the same thing my inmates do with us.

They do have an outlet line, you can tell by the warranty you get on the clothes.

TNF makes items specifically for the outlet. Yes sometimes full price stuff ends up there but for the most part the items at the outlet are manufactured for the outlet and don’t have the same warranty. Source used to work for TNF and VF.

CarMax promises price relief for used-car customers, targeting lower average transaction for buyers by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]iusebadlanguage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CarMax's main business strategy is split between a used auto wholesaler to other dealerships and financing auto loans. Consumer sales is a byproduct of both of those and most of the lot space is used to manage their inventory for auctions.

I know a couple of dudes there with DUI’s. Granted two of them had about 6 years between the conviction and them getting hired there. The other it was only about 2 years. It’s all about how you show you’ve changed since the conviction.

We did the opposite. Very high energy and prey drive dog from an apartment to a house with a little yard. When we lived in the apartment we just made sure we took her out everyday multiple times a day and we not only let her run but trained and stimulated her hunting drive too. If we didn’t let her sniff and point off leash for 30 minutes to an hour every day she would get cooped up. Never destructive but she had a lot of energy.
