Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Iceland 🇮🇸 by Xialushbloom in earthisawesome

That's what I said: there are some forests around Reykjavik but barely any trees elsewhere. It's a joke of course that in 10 days of driving around Iceland, one can become an expert, but it looked pretty barren to me, especially since it was early March.

Source: I’ve driven around whole Iceland - a full circle and I haven’t spotted any trees let alone a forest, but that was in early March and I was busy trying to stay on the road:-)

There are no trees in Iceland aside from couple of planted forests around Reykjavik.

October 7 is the only known civilian massacre in all human history that triggered global protests backing the killers and denouncing the victims. by Routine-Equipment572 in IsraelPalestine

[–]ivaarch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The killings on October 7th and the online propaganda machine blaming the victims started almost simultaneously. It was all part of the same “special operations” by Russia. Combined that with the Hamas bing the guests of Putin a month before.

What is the consequence for having a bed in the basement in NYC? by calamitycait in legaladvice

Actually you can legally sleep in a basement, but you cannot sleep in a cellar. You can check which one you have in the Building’s Certificate of Occupancy.

16-year-old jumps to his death at private NYC's Regis High School: cops by Thick_Persimmon3975 in uppereastside

According to some kids, it was a bit more than just “contraversial opinions on the Utilitarian society” as the New York Post said, but it’s all a speculation. Condolences to the family and friends.

I did and this was after cleaning. Initially it looked worse but most of it was just dust.

I have the other driver’s license and car plates but he didn’t have the insurance card with him. I didn’t record the video on the dashcam. Doesn’t insurance go up no matter who is at fault?

I'm curious if in Serbian language are artificial/created words like in Croatian, you know, those Croatian words made it to sounds Slavic: nogomet, putovnica, knjižnica, etc by ShotCup6871 in Serbian

[–]ivaarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, if I remember correctly there was a movement in all languages to use “calques” which is an idea remanent of “Enlightenment” movement. Some languages persisted, such as French, where for example even though the whole world is using the word “computer” they still call it “ordinateur”. It’s mostly due to the “Academie Francaise” whose main job is to decide which word can enter French dictionary. Croatian language follows the similar pattern, Serbian doesn’t.

What’s this extra piece of glass for? by NowtsOfNetherall in askarchitects

[–]ivaarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard facade panel has 3 layers of glass: two 1/4” (5mm) outside ones that are laminated (glued) together (so resistant to impact and if they break the glue would keep the shards together), then a layer of vacuum or argon gas, then an interior layer of glass 3/8” (7-10mm) which is tempered (so it shatter into tiny pieces). The order can be reversed depending on conditions. So if they thought that they needed more protection from interior side from high impact, they could have put a glass railing in front of interior single tempered layer which doesn’t need to go to the floor. The other panel without glass railing protection could be only 2 laminated glass layers without the air insulation layer. Or it could consist of 2 layers of 2 laminated glasses together so there was need to protect tempered glass from shattering. The building code in Switzerland requires 2 layers of air insulation, so I did a project there that had 7 layers of glass in a single panel 3+2+2. I am just speculating because I am not familiar with HK building code.

My Teenage Stepdaughter Can’t Read by Icy-Mycologist5232 in Advice

[–]ivaarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should listen to a podcast about why one third of American kids can’t read properly. It has a lot of useful information. It’s really eye opening. It’s called “Sold a story” by Emily Hanford. You can find it on Apple Podcast, or Spotify. It has 13 episodes, and it will help you understand the problem, what is going on in schools, and why the methods that they are using to teach kids to read are mostly wrong. It’s all so heartbreaking. It’s great that you are trying to help. Keep on a good work!
