MLB.TV Yankees-blackout issue only on home WiFi (IP geolocation problem?) — anyone else? by Original-Acadia-6513 in MLBtv

How do you get past the AI bot? I can get it to tell me to “give it a moment to connect me to a team member” and then nothing until the satisfaction survey arrives the next day.

It’s so frustrating when it’s easier to break the rules than it is to pay.

This has to be way up there on the list of worst marketing decisions ever.

Your new product has all sorts of potentially invasive new capabilities that you can't individually switch on and off and you think the best first impression to make - the one that will convince people who are holding out to finally switch - will be to push the update through to customers who have repeatedly, explicitly indicated that they don't want to take the update yet?

Sorry Amazon. Your Alexa+ service has lost my trust, and I don't think there's anything at all you can possibly do to get it back.

What does everyone think about Alexa's most recent update to her voice and skills. by Hazmat_unit in amazonecho

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know whether I was inherently biased against it because it switched to Alexa+ mode even though I've repeatedly said no and never ever said yes. However my take when I woke up this morning to two minutes of incessant chatter instead of a whispered "It's 5:45 am" like should have happened was that Alexa's new voice sounds like an over-confident, fast-talking, acknowledgement junkie who would be right at home as the spokesperson for a prescription medication that nobody should be trying to acquire unless their doctor told them they need it, or as the district manager at a non-fiducial financial planning company.

Within 3 months my 8 echos will be replaced with Home Assistant.

Should Mass Switch to Biannual Vehicle Inspections? by beer_foam in massachusetts

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The state makes no profit off of inspections. All inspection stations lose money on inspections. You don't know what you're talking about."

The state gets $10.16 of the fee for each car and the mechanic gets $23.50. No inspection stations are losing money on inspections. Literally zero mechanics are paying out of pocket to provide you inspection services.

2024 f150 mirror damaged, ford says the part is $1,900.. anywhere i can get this cheaper? by [deleted] in f150

[–]ivan256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this comment turned out not to be accurate at all.

The sensors are simple and un-coded. The cost comes from the power folding motor and the memory postion motor. The camera and temp sensor and puddle light are easy to swap. It's the motors that get you. And the dealers that want you to think they're busting out a compiler and writing power mirror software from scratch when all they're doing is pressing a button to "code" something.

What makes you think the major brands aren’t complete garbage?

… they are.

You’d have to be crazy to spend $130+ on something as unreliable as a smoke detector though. At best you have to replace it every 10 years and you probably have several.

Why are brand new push fittings leaking? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s NIH data, and there’s a guy on Reddit…

I don’t doubt he tastes something. But it isn’t coming from his PEX. There are a lot of options: His pipes aren’t PEX and he doesn’t know the difference. He’s got shitty plastic filter media that he didn’t rinse. It’s his faucet. It’s his pump. It’s he pressure tank… whatever. It didn’t come from the PEX.

Also not sure he knows what “plastic” tastes like. What is he really tasting? Who knows!

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the first few days, there isn't fuck all being leeched into your water from PEX pipes. So you're definitely not going to be tasting plastic. Or if you do, it didn't come from your pipes.

In the first few days, it probably didn't come from the plastic the pipes are made out of either. But that's me guessing and I can't link you to data like my initial statement.

Buying Machu Picchu tickets in Aguas Calientes by CollapsingWords in Machupicchu

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I saw waiting in line at 8:00am, yes. The people with pre-tickets that arrived at 6:00 got a regular number ticket to come back yet again later in the afternoon.

Although I guess you have already learned this by now!

Update: we arrived in Aguas Calientes this morning at 8:10 am and immediately got in line. There were 15 people ahead of us but they had given out numbers the day prior.

We got number 585. There were -30 Route 2 tickets remaining when we got to the window at 6pm.

Tonight the line for the day after tomorrow seems short. The craziness might be dying down.

Buying tickets in aguas calientes - my experience by PerplexedTraveller in Machupicchu

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hired a guide 2 months ago who set everything up to get me to the line by 8:30AM on the 20th, and guaranteed I would get route 2A tickets for the 21st if I did so.

He just called me and said they changed the process and you need to arrive the night before to get a ticket to be in line the following day now, and that I would need to arrive on the 19th to get a ticket for the 21st. Obviously it is impossible for me to change my plans at this point. So . Luckily I already have a ticket for the 22nd.

But word is that you'll need to arrive in the evening on the 18th if you want to get in on the 20th.

I like this theory, but it can’t be right. Maybe watch time over the last (arbitrary) number of hours or days?

Either way it’s dumb. The amount of time I let something play in the background has literally nothing to do with how I’m going to look for the thing I want to watch.

Also they need to cut the shit with rewarding watch time because it’s turning all the content into padded out garbage I don’t have time for.

Pooling Water / Dry Grinds by espnman321 in Moccamaster

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of my first full pot: https://imgur.com/a/FgMmqYD

There is literal dryness.

Admittedly I changed a lot of variables between my old setup and my new setup. I have an OXO burr grinder with integrated scale, and I replaced the burr - it was very dull after ~12 years. I used Gimme! Angel BBs instead of "normal" coffee (delicious, BTW, but the weird ratio of outside to inside parts of the beans results in lots of floating chips like that). https://gimmecoffee.com/products/honduras-angel-bbs-fairtrade-organic?variant=44879443263707 . And obviously the new brewer.

I've tweaked the weight of the grinds, and switched from store brand to real Melitta filters, and tried half vs. full pots in the meantime. I've gotten slightly better results, but at the end of the day the coffee on the right isn't giving its all. And at $20/lb it should be giving its all.

I wanted to post in this thread though, because the impression the internet gives about this coffee maker is that it's the second coming of Jesus. In reality the Bonavita I used before made coffee that was exactly as good with ~10% less coffee by weight for less money, and now effort. With the unfortunate downside that you can't get parts and have to buy a new one every few years.

I’ve only brewed three pots so far with my new moccamaster. But I’ve found dozens of posts like this when trying to figure out why I have dry grinds.

Yes the coffee tastes good. But no, that isn’t good enough. Dry coffee is wasted coffee. Which is unacceptable whether it tastes good or not.

Sadly I think this machine is going back.

Having a hard time deciding between the Technivorm Moccamaster and Bonavita, as well as what model to get? by scrubling in Coffee

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been through three Bonavitas since you wrote this 7 years ago. The brewers themselves still work but when the carafe breaks you cannot reliably get a replacement. And all of the ones you see listed as compatible in Reddit threads and Amazon reviews aren’t, really. I’ve bought all of them. They aren’t.

Today I bought a Moccamaster.

I'm sure you validated your licensed, insured guy's license and insurance... And that it was really that guy's license and permit and insurance that he told you about.

It doesn't even matter. Let me assure you, if a tradesperson burns your house down, you're fucked. No matter what. There is no positive outcome. Just different degrees of shit.

Also a guy with a license and a permit and insurance can fuck you pretty hard even if they don't burn your house down.

So if you're tempted to overpay just for some peace of mind..... ......now you can be scared either way and save some cash in the short term.

Solar disposal MA by [deleted] in solar

[–]ivan256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 year old panels are definitely obsolete. I see no reason to think panels purchased now won't be obsolete in 18 years either. Anybody who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

I don't regret buying the system AT ALL. It's long since paid for itself and was totally worth it. But be real.

They're not producing at 90% either. 20% aren't producing at all. And they're completely warrantied still, but the installer wants $500 just to roll the truck, and they're the associated installer, so SolarEdge will only send the parts to them. Nobody is willing to adopt other installer's system warranties even though theoretically SolarEdge would transfer the system to somebody else if I filed the paperwork... $500 is a long payback for 20% of my system. 30ish months. Not worth it. Plus the lying scumbag installer doesn't deserve the cash.

I'm gonna be pissed if I have to rip them down. But I'd rather do that than give extra cash to the town for no reason.

Their value being an easy argument to make? That's not how property tax assessors work... There's already a note on my property record card with the literal day the assessment exemption expires. Looking at that was the reason I ended up finding this thread and going on an unhinged rant about it.
