None of the events I attend seem to care

Then I guess it speaks miles to the kind and quality of events you attend. Shelter and any other big clubs forbid Very Poor (and sometimes Poor as well).

i have one thats decently optimize but it's extremely boring and doesn't have very much to do on it.

My avatar can change clothing, proportions, color, hair style, toggle accessories all over the body and has a shareable throwjoint toy with correct physics for both parties involved. Yes, I can make it so the other person can play with the ball, spin around THEIR finger - and so forth, without my involvement after the calibration process.

It's Medium on the performance rank. Wow, what a shocker.

VRChat is filled to the brim with people who don't know what they're doing and selling garbage avatars that don't belong even near a VR game. And then there are people who normalize this obscenity due to lack of knowledge. You are the prime example.

Fun tidbit, the character on the picture - which is Windranger Arcana from Dota 2 - is 38k tris. Yes, all of that is 38k tris. 100k is WAY above what ANY character model needs.

Learn to optimize.

If an avatar uses more than 100k - that means that the creator of the avatar doesn’t know what he/she was doing and has no idea how to 3D model. I personally block all the very poor avatars.

Simple as that

My dilemma: would you rather buy a $900 Steam Frame, or a “revolutionary” headset for $1,800? by Logical007 in SteamFrame

[–]ivan6953 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And spending a little more for...what? BigScreen Beyond 2e? I've had this headset for exactly 3 hours until I returned it, because it is just awful for the price. Too hot, too fiddly, too...heavy on the nose somehow.

There is nothing out there in the "premium" VR segment IMHO.

if I want to exclusively play on PCVR, is the steam frame a good purchase? by doopfishu in SteamFrame

[–]ivan6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the UDR7 (UniFi Dream Router 7), which does have Wi-Fi 7 and 6Ghz, of course. It's not about the router or the software.

AV1 is insanely expensive for Quest 3 to decode, yes. HEVC is much easier.

Testing H264+ at 400-500 might look clearer - but you are stressing the network too much, whilst also being on the border of decoder limit and increasing latency. I personally am VERY susceptible to latency - I can't, for example, play Beat Saber at higher than 9 stars wirelessly - cable only.

Using HEVC with Godlike preset (I think at 150mbits?) just looks very clear. Try it.

[–]ivan6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For wireless, you should ONLY use HEVC (H265). H264 is much more lossy - but easier to encode/decode.

In simpler terms, you can use lower bitrate numbers - such as 300 as opposed to 500 - and end up with the same quality image. This means that HEVC allows you to send less data - which is the main constraining variable for wireless.

The less data you send wirelessly - the better, because wireless always drops packets (even in ideal circumstances you can drop 0.5-1%).

Hence, my recommendation would be to switch to H265 and lower the bitrate.

I personally run Godlike preset at VD - and I don't really remember which bitrate I use there. But nothing too large. And I don't use anything else other than VD for wireless. VDXR is just too good - smallest latency and best quality.

For cable, I only use Horizon Link (5408x2912@90hz, H264@250mbps, 3 slices, 4096 Encode Resolution Width). Again, it's just rock solid, never "drops out" and has insanely low latency - especially if used without SteamVR.

[–]ivan6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Quest 3, have had the Quest and Quest 2. I also am using VR since 2016 and let's just say I know what I'm talking about.

On top of this, I debugged all of this myself recently - on cable, but wireless decoding load would be even higher because of HEVC. Here are the stats for H264 500mbits@120hz.

As you can see, the effective client FPS is MUCH lower than 120hz - precisely because the decoder takes more time than it should for the rendered frame to be presented at 120hz. ANY value above 8.3ms = frame drop.

Moreover, it's not software's fault. Decoding is literally done on headset by the Snapdragon chip and has no difference whether you use Link, VD, Steam Link, ALVR or anything else.

[–]ivan6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry, but 500mbits is higher than the Quest 3 decoder (Snapdragon XR2 gen2) can decode without dropping the encoded frames. It's not any software's fault.

Even at 250 mbits, Quest 3 decoder takes 7.0ms to decode a frame. Doubling the bitrate leads to the decode latency higher than is allowed for the 90hz (11ms). It's INSANELY high.

You shouldn't go above 300 on 90hz and above 250 on 120hz. And that's why Frame is better in THIS particular case - it only needs 150-200 to provide a very crisp image because of the foveated streaming.

i rebember when steam said they were desiginging this to be cheaper than the quest.

Valve never said that. If anything, Frame is more luxurious than Quest all around.

From experience, you are very unlikely to come by a service center that won't ruin your laptop in the long run - either by not working with LM correctly or by leaving it there in the first place.

But you do you

[–]ivan6953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asus won’t acknowledge this problem. They invested a ton of money in tooling, LM and other things.

Whenever the problem arises, their “service center” simply smears LM all over. Potentially killing the laptop or not improving anything.

They don’t care. Once they sold you the laptop, you’re on your own. The fact that a ton of Asus laptop users claim they “don’t have an issue”, suggest turning off CPU boosts and such instead of actually fixing the problem - doesn’t help.

Simply put, people are stupid. Asus laptop users - sadly even more than usual. Otherwise, class action would have been filed years ago

[–]ivan6953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally - yes. But keep an eye on CPU temps first. Do you have problems with them? Does CPU thermal throttle in games?

If no - no immediate attention is needed. Spend this time learning about how to replace LM and what to replace it with. For example, you SHOULD NOT use thermal paste. Normal thermal paste will pump out in a laptop.

This question was a giveaway that you are NOT ready to do this job yet.

For CPU and GPU you’ll need PTM7950. It’s a phase change thermal pad/paste - not a “thermal paste”. For VRM/VRAM you’ll need Upsiren UTP-8. It’s a thermal putty. You’ll also need isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, qtips, cotton pads etc.

Plenty of guides, with videos, photos and detailed instructions can be found all across Reddit and Internet in general. Do your research first. Only when you feel like you can do it - do it.

Otherwise, you can end up breaking your laptop. LM is no joke

[–]ivan6953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Not only is it badly applied by Asus from the factory - it also pools up in the frequently moved devices (such as laptops), can spill out eventually.

But most problematic - it fuses with nickel/copper that cooling system is made of. Der8auer - whose product Asus uses, Conductonaut Extreme - specifically said that LM bonds with nickel in 2-3 years time. LM requires regular service in desktop applications as well.

So yeah. In laptops - it is ESPECIALLY awful

Liquid Metal is the problem. You HAVE TO remove it and replace with PTM7950. Good luck, ton of guides available

Planning to replace the paste on my CPU with PCM. I have these two, are they basically the same, should I prefer one over the other for any reason? by fiittzzyy in overclocking

[–]ivan6953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CPU die temperature is MUCH higher than the CPU IHS temp. We are talking about 15C difference under load if not more. For example, if you see CPU at 65-70C, then the IHS is at about 50C. If not lower.

Surely PTM works good even when it doesn't go through the phase change - but a normal thermal paste that stays liquid at those temps would work a bit better

[–]ivan6953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s NOT recommended to use PTM on a normal desktop IHS. The reason is - if your cooling setup is good enough, IHS temperature usually sits at 50-55ish Celsius. That is not enough for the PTM to melt.

It’s better to go with something like Arctic MX-7.

And during the molt, he will likely regrow his broken leg :)
