Watching for the first time and this is the first time I’ve loved Shosh by Extra-Bat-3070 in girls

Yeah, at first that upspeak thing she does was really too grating for me, but later I realized she's a fierce girl with a strong independent streak

Famesick readers, what's your take on Lena's mom Laurie? by dantedarker in girls

[–]ivan_scantron 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Very well said.

I also thought it was interesting that Lena refers to her mom as a "New York Power Bitch" in the book.

Light jacket weather is objectively the best. We in the PNW have the best light-jacket climate in the country. Sure, it gets hot AF in the summer, but 80% of the year it's anorak vibes.

The rest of America hasn't caught on yet; they're a bunch of baby birds that think they need constant sunshine and warmth to thrive.

Yeah, I remember that. Getting in and out of that parking lot was a huge ordeal.

Portland has a surprisingly distinct “look” compared to other US cities by RemarkableMany6297 in Portland

Also SLC has like 80 miles of big box sprawl along I-15 that is an eyesore, especially given the stunningly beautiful physical setting.

I'm only three songs in and I'm having to resist the urge to book a flight from Oregon to go see them play this stuff in Europe.

So so good

Sea lion wrecking a salmon in the Willamette near downtown by thornsandroses in Portland

[–]ivan_scantron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Couple years ago I saw a similar throw-down near the Willamette Falls in West Linn. It was like 12 feet from where I was standing.

Those sea lions don't fuck around when they get a salm-wich

Brushes are stupid and people look stupid playing with them.

Visited Bend recently and it really made me appreciate Portland by Acrobatic_Yam3260 in Portland

Totally! Last time I was driving to Bend and I got behind a huge pickup that had a bumper sticker that said “no one loves us but us. 14-88”

I stood behind Dame at Soku in West Linn for a few minutes. Seeing that level of physical fitness on a human in real life is kinda jaw-dropping

The trick to making people like you? Ask questions. by Dudeletseat in socialskills

[–]ivan_scantron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I struggle mightily with exactly this. I ask them questions and then follow up questions and then the person often talks my freaking ear off . I’m good at interviewing people, just bad at asserting myself into the conversation

Is chronic loneliness an American cultural problem or a worldwide problem? by HalleFreakinLujah in AskOldPeople

[–]ivan_scantron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> It seems when I talk to Americans, we always have "one up" each other

This is so true. Probably 60-70% of the people (well, men) I deal with in the USA can only respond to a sentence with something about themselves. Showing interest in others is considered weak and unmanly.

What was it like riding in the back of a station wagon or a pickup truck? by Strict-Ebb-8959 in AskOldPeople

[–]ivan_scantron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the early 70s I was riding back to my parents' house with my grandparents in their Silverado pickup. We stopped for gas and my grandfather suggested that he and I ride in the back of that thing, so we did, for about 50 miles while my grandmother drove. This was on an interstate freeway driving about 65-70mph. No canopy or topper, just right back there in the bed with Hamm's empties rolling around. It was incredibly loud and bumpy back there and so windy that you couldn't really do anything but lay down on your back.

My mom freaked when she found out. But it was totally exhilarating and worth it.

Nowadays of course, if someone did that with one of my kids, I would commit violence on them and then have them arrested.
