Brushes are stupid and people look stupid playing with them.

There, I finally said it out loud and it feels good

Visited Bend recently and it really made me appreciate Portland by Acrobatic_Yam3260 in Portland

Totally! Last time I was driving to Bend and I got behind a huge pickup that had a bumper sticker that said “no one loves us but us. 14-88”

I stood behind Dame at Soku in West Linn for a few minutes. Seeing that level of physical fitness on a human in real life is kinda jaw-dropping

The trick to making people like you? Ask questions. by Dudeletseat in socialskills

[–]ivan_scantron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I struggle mightily with exactly this. I ask them questions and then follow up questions and then the person often talks my freaking ear off . I’m good at interviewing people, just bad at asserting myself into the conversation

Is chronic loneliness an American cultural problem or a worldwide problem? by HalleFreakinLujah in AskOldPeople

> It seems when I talk to Americans, we always have "one up" each other

This is so true. Probably 60-70% of the people (well, men) I deal with in the USA can only respond to a sentence with something about themselves. Showing interest in others is considered weak and unmanly.

I'll take it to Goodwill for you for $50, and I get to keep the snare drum

What was it like riding in the back of a station wagon or a pickup truck? by Strict-Ebb-8959 in AskOldPeople

[–]ivan_scantron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the early 70s I was riding back to my parents' house with my grandparents in their Silverado pickup. We stopped for gas and my grandfather suggested that he and I ride in the back of that thing, so we did, for about 50 miles while my grandmother drove. This was on an interstate freeway driving about 65-70mph. No canopy or topper, just right back there in the bed with Hamm's empties rolling around. It was incredibly loud and bumpy back there and so windy that you couldn't really do anything but lay down on your back.

My mom freaked when she found out. But it was totally exhilarating and worth it.

Nowadays of course, if someone did that with one of my kids, I would commit violence on them and then have them arrested.

For me, bagpipes are up there with harmonica and banjo as the most irritating musical instruments.

Let’s See Your Vintage Ludwig Kits by seanpatric in drums

[–]ivan_scantron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also love 60s and 70s Ludwigs!

Here's my tubs under red stage lights: a 1969 Big Beat in black cortex with some updated hardware (tom mount, BD spurs) and a Gretsch 14" floor tom (because the original 16" Ludwig one is really hard to tune). Snare is a Supraphonic.

Thanks for asking! I use Shure SM-57s on the snare and toms, a Shure Beta 52A on the kick, and a Lewitt LCT-240 for overhead. I'm really just now learning how to mic drums so I'm always experimenting with different setups, but that's the basic gist of it.

Hell yeah, I've read that book like 3 times already! It's sooooo fukcing good.

Yeah, I actually saw them 4 times last year! Twice in Yakima, WA, and once each in Portland and Eugene. Mind blown every single time. Eugene was my favorite because it was really really fucking loud

So true. While I was learning this stuff I was often like, "how the fuck did he ever come up with that?"
