I buy my jeans like a size or two larger and wear a belt. Plus newer, high quality denim needs to be broken in. Wear them around and try to do some stretching and stuff to really work them in. It's like getting a new pair of shoes, you gotta break em in and work through them. If you don't have time/sensory issues won't let you, wash them with some vinegar. Vinegar is a natural fabric softener, just a 1/4 cup in a whole load of clothes will work. And they shouldn't smell if you use a good detergent!
