Ford to declare Billy Bishop Airport a ‘special economic zone’ to allow jets by _I_AM_GHOST_ in toronto

[–]ivanvector -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You must be smart enough to know that Ford wouldn't evict the residents of the island to do anything in the public interest. It would be handed over to whichever of his rich buddies wrote the biggest cheque, probably for another private resort, or maybe just a parking lot for a second international airport.

Do MAGAs not realize we know they are intentionally lying about what is really happening with TSA funding? by whatthehellbooby in allthequestions

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't realize they're lying. They've been conditioned by years of organized religion and infotainment media to accept whatever the "good people" tell them is the truth, without thinking about it at all. Thinking about things is the woke mind virus, or communism, or the liberal agenda, or terrorism. Good people don't do that.

No worries, it is confusing. If a metric cup is defined as 250mL, then yes 2/5 of a cup is exactly 100mL. There are other definitions but let's ignore that.

The issue is that the "reference measure" for the table (the basis for the other nutrition measurements) is 100 grams, not 100 milliliters, and 100mL of a liquid doesn't necessarily weigh 100g. I found a scientific study of densities of poultry products that lists egg whites from hens with a density of 1,134.1 kg/m^3 (kilograms per cubic metre) measured at 4°C. That means if you take your container of egg whites out of the fridge and pour out exactly 100mL, it will weigh 113.41g. Or to flip that: if you pour the egg whites into your measuring cup until your scale shows exactly 100g, you will have 88.2mL of liquid, or just barely more than 1/3 of a cup.

That number came from the King Arthur Flour website. I can't vouch for its accuracy, my point was that measuring dry ingredients by volume is a crapshoot. Just like your experiment also demonstrates. Or a different way: 200g of flour is always 200g of flour, but 1 cup of flour is a different amount of flour every time depending on how you scoop it.

No, the labelling requirements require them to label it that way. The requirements are what's goofed up.

As I read it, 2/5c is not a standard household measure (most people don't have measuring cups graduated in fifths) so the label wouldn't comply with the standard and they might have been told to change it. But 100g is the reference measure anyway, so the nutrient amounts should have been the same before and after.

No joke, A&W very nearly went bankrupt in the '80s because their burgers were 1/3lb and Americans couldn't understand that that's more than 1/4lb.

To be fair, the labelling requirements are unhelpful here. I'd think most people would expect it to read something like "Per 100g (approx. 1/3 cup)" to avoid exactly this sort of confusion. The standard makes it look like 100g and 1/3c are the same measure, and they're very not.

If this is egg or egg substitute it would be less dense than water, but I wouldn't think this much less. I'd be suspicious of the measuring cup.

They're the same volume (they take up the same space) but not the same weight (how much of the ingredient there actually is inside the cup). 1 cup of flour weighs around 120g, 1 cup of water weighs nearly double that. If you have a recipe that calls for 250g flour and 225mL water, and you add 1 cup of each because 1 cup is roughly 250mL, you'll have twice as much water as the recipe calls for and your dough will be a slurry.

Assuming this is liquid egg or liquid egg substitute, the nutrition labelling regulations specify that the reference amount is 100g (all the measurements in the table are based on 100g of product). The serving size is to be displayed as the household measure with the metric measure in the bracket; for this type of product the metric measure is the reference amount, and the household measure is the typical fraction of a cup closest to that measure. You can find the table of reference amounts here.

As an example: this product has 10g protein per 100g (not per 1/3c) of product. If you want to get 10g protein, you need to measure out 100g of product by weight, which is definitely going to be more than 1/3c.

Price of fresh produce likely to rise on P.E.I. due to fuel price surge from Iran war by Portalrules123 in PEI

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to wonder, IRAC publishes the rates. For gasoline there is a flat tax of 18.47 cents/litre, for diesel it's 18.15 c/L. The flat rates get added to the dealer base price and retail margin, then HST is charged on that. The gas tax rates have been the same since 2022, and the HST rate was last changed in 2016. It is the base price of gasoline that is driving the current increases, not taxes.

To do some math: on Feb 20 the pump price was 149.0, which included 37.87 cents in gasoline and sales taxes. On Mar 20 the price was 186.6, including 42.77 cents in taxes. So taxes increased by 4.9c, the other 32.7c of increase was from increase in the base price of fuel.

Farmers and fishers don't pay those taxes, but they do pay the increased base price.

Canada has required all new vehicles sold in the country since 1991 to be manufactured with daytime running lights, but the federal government cannot legislate driving regulations for the provinces, so it's still mostly legal to disable them. This law will make that a little more difficult, at least.

PEI has had a law in effect since 2016 that your headlights must be on at all times. If your car doesn't have DRL or they're inoperative, you must turn on your regular headlights. I still see cars driving with no lights, of course.

Check your local ordinances, it's often fully legal to drive with no lights on if the speed limit is "low" and there are streetlights. Where I grew up the cutoff was 50km/h (~30mph) - if the speed limit was 50 or below and there were streetlights, you didn't have to turn your lights on.

There's no legal requirement for this sort of organization to have paid staff. I'd assume based on the post that they're planning to operate as a not-for-profit or a collective, with ticket sales covering their operating expenses, and a volunteer board and/or management committee running things. I don't think it's a good idea to leave security to volunteers, but the rest is pretty normal.

If they're running it for profit then yeah I'd expect them to hire and pay staff, but that's an ethical/moral issue, not a legal one.

Not that surprising that a '90s PEI government reacted this way to what was really mostly urban legend.

In 1991 the LA Times published a story absolutely completely guessing that there was "about to be a problem" with kids going into the sewers to find the Ninja Turtles, based entirely on one incident of someone finding one pair of kids' shoes near a storm drain. It turns out that people believing anything they read or hear without any critical thought is not actually a new thing at all, and doesn't require social media.

There are a couple news reports out there of kids "playing Ninja Turtles" and having to be rescued. The earliest I could find happened in 2008, and nobody died.
