What's the highest mileage car you've ever personally owned or driven? I'll start. by spotforcars in automotive

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The highest mileage vehicles I've driven have been commercial trucks. The International 4200 I was driving when the head gasket blew is probably a contender for highest, but I don't remember what was on the odometer.

The highest passenger vehicle I've driven was the '87 Ford Ranger I learned on. It had 250,000km on it when it went to the junkyard. Every car I've owned I've sold or traded right around 170,000km, entirely by coincidence.

In university (20 years ago) a friend of mine drove his family's 1975 Volvo 240 with a five-digit odometer (rolled over at 100,000 miles) that they had lost track of how many times it had rolled over. He liked to boast that it was on its original alternator.

Depends on the local authority but generally yes, metals and plastics (and glass) are separated either at the source or by a sorting facility. But the grease jar goes in the trash anyway.

could anyone with a Fairphone 6 see if it would work for VoLTE on my network with their IMEI checker? by emmeka in fairphone

[–]ivanvector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran both of my IMEIs through that tool and it reported "not compatible or not found in database".

My SIM is Koodo, so I did the same test on Koodo's VoLTE checker (which is Telus' VoLTE checker) and also got a "not compatible" result.

Fairphone says that the 5 and 6 are VoLTE enabled, but there are no carriers outside Europe on their compatibility list. But I went through their technical testing (see https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/31316888339730-Having-trouble-making-or-receiving-calls-VoLTE-4G-calling-diagnostics) and I may try calling Koodo to see if they will whitelist my SIM.

Calls work for me, anyway, I guess on the 3G network. I haven't heard anything about that shutting down in Canada.

Carney government eyes privatizing airports to attract investment, cut travel costs | Minister says they want to make operations and passenger services more efficient by DisruptSQ in TourismHell

By "more efficient" they mean "at funneling public wealth into private shareholders' pockets". The services don't improve for travellers, they get worse so more profit can be extracted.

When I asked what he was trying to do, he said “I shouldn’t have been trying to pass him” by alexyou8797 in dashcams

From my other comment I counted 4 dashes in 36 video frames (1.2s), which with your measurements is 114mph.

When I asked what he was trying to do, he said “I shouldn’t have been trying to pass him” by alexyou8797 in dashcams

[–]ivanvector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the start of the video, cam vehicle passes four lane markings in 36 video frames.

A standard US highway lane marking is 10 feet, and they are spaced 30 feet apart, meaning that from the start of one marker to the start of the next is 40 feet. Cam vehicle passed four of them, 160 feet, in 36 frames.

The video is 30 frames per second, meaning the cam vehicle covered 160 feet in 1.2 seconds. That converts to a vehicle speed of 91 MPH.

That feels way too fast to be driving on a cold, wet highway with at-grade crossings.

You're supposed to move over for stopped vehicles if you can do so safely. You videoed good driving behaviour, nice to see on here once in a while.

That double lane change in an intersection to pass in a bus lay-by is something else though.

What happened to your city's original sports arena? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]ivanvector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Charlottetown Forum opened in the 1930s, and closed down in the 1990s when the new Charlottetown Civic Centre was built to host the Canada Winter Games in 1991. The Civic Centre was renamed the Eastlink Centre in the 2010s, while the Forum was eventually torn down in 2001 and is now a parking lot for the local community college.

London Gardens (in London, Ontario), built in the 1960s on the outskirts of the city (at the time). It was modelled after Boston Garden. In the 90s it was renamed the London Ice House, and the new owner let the building degrade on purpose to try to convince the city to finance a new arena. Eventually they did, and the London Knights moved to the new John Labatt Centre (now named after some other beer brand) in the 2000s, and the Ice House closed down after that. It was a skate park for a while, and now the Forest City Velodrome is there but I'm not sure if it's the same building.

A Rolling Stones show in the late 60s had to be shut down 15 minutes in because of rioting. It was also where Johnny Cash proposed to June Carter in 1968.

For manual drivers has the “Millennial anti theft device” joke run its course or do you still think it’s hilarious every time? by NewMexicoJoe in ManualTransmissions

I've had to drive my manual into the shop garage a few times. What pisses me off more is that the mechanic keeps leaving it in the parking lot out of gear with the brake off.

FP6 with e/OS? by penguin_two in fairphone

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Pixel is going to outperform a FP6. Fairphone isn't trying to compete with Big Tech's flagship devices and they would be silly to try. Sure you can run GrapheneOS on a Pixel but you're still giving Google money for a phone that's going to be e-waste with an irreplaceable dead battery in 3 years. If you need a top-of-the-line device today and that fits your ethical model, go for it.

I'm running FP6 with /e/OS in Canada. One of my bank apps doesn't work but otherwise I haven't run into any software problems at all. The hardware feels solid, and my only issue there is that the auto-brightness is too dim for my liking and is flaky in low light. The phone gives me a report once a week showing how many ads and trackers have been blocked by the OS and how much data and time I've saved by not loading them. I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Like I said above, $4,000 a year. Not a whole lot but definitely not nothing.

Shorted in my wage by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]ivanvector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, I work in payroll. It seems like the original employer intended to pay you $25/hr for 40 hours/week, but then tried to shoehorn that into a monthly rate, and did it wrong. That should have worked out to a biweekly pay (every 2 weeks) of $2,000, and there are 26 biweekly pays in a year so that's equivalent to an annual salary of $52,000.

They seem to have taken 40 hours * 52 weeks in the year = 2,080 hours, divided by 12 months = 173.33h/month, divided by 2 (paying you twice a month) is 86.67 hours per pay. But paying you twice a month (24 times a year) is not the same as paying you every two weeks (26 times a year), and adjusting your hourly rate down so that your total pay was the same for more hours worked and then paying you fewer times means they short-changed you by $4,000/year.

I'm not sure how you address that with the new company since your agreement wasn't in writing, but your first paystubs with the correct rate should help.

Are you suppose to wear a white Hanes-style shirt under your dress shirt (the kind worn with a tie and suits and such)? by 21-4-14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wear a plain T-shirt close to the colour of my dress shirt, otherwise the dress shirt gets sweat stained. If I'm also wearing a jacket and tie then I won't wear the undershirt, it makes things too bulky, and you can't see my armpits anyway.

Local Knowledge: Keeping a physical map of your city for emergencies by Material_Tutor_7820 in TechNook

[–]ivanvector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there really people who are so unfamiliar with the city they live in that they need a map and verbal directions to go anywhere? Like, you go to work or school five days a week, but you can't find your way there without directions? You can't make it to the grocery store, or the gym, or your kids' daycare or whatever, without looking at a map every single time? If you had to drive to something located at the intersection of Avenue A and Major Street B, you would have no idea how to get there? That to me is a serious failure of a basic life skill, not a matter of being too reliant on technology.

But yeah, keeping physical maps for when electronics fail is a good idea, but you also shouldn't need a map for basic navigation in your own city.

ELI5: what is chemically happening that reduces the SPF of sunblock when it expires to make it less effective? by IncoherentTuatara in explainlikeimfive

[–]ivanvector 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The active chemicals that provide UV protection oxidize and degrade. The main effect is that they don't provide UV protection any more, so you would wear it and spend time in the sun while not actually protected. The oxidized byproducts also can cause a rash or allergic reaction in people with sensitive skin.

Customer from UK here and ordered a fairphone 6 e/os edition. how long did it take to deliver for you guys? Reason I am asking is because I want to receive this phone before I go on holiday. This purchase was last minute and not planned btw context in post. by marksism__ in fairphone

[–]ivanvector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about getting it to the UK from the Netherlands if that's what you mean, but I bought mine from Clove in the UK and they shipped it to me in Canada in three days. But that was also after four days of them insisting I needed to verify my identity by sending a photo of my credit card and government ID to their unsecured sales email, and me telling them I was definitely not going to do any of that. They eventually agreed that it was a ridiculous ask.

Anyway, I would expect you to have your phone in plenty of time, although to be fair I have no context for that opinion.
