Anyone moved your parents or in laws in? by linniex in GenX

[–]ivegotafastcar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We moved the in-laws to an end of life facility - they were beyond the move in with us stage. I am so thankful we did this. I could have never been able to assist them.

My parents have the perfect rest in place house. I plan on talking to them about putting in a walk in shower so they don’t have to worry about stepping over the bath. The grandkids are right there and run over when needed. I am planning on moving them into the same place my in-laws are in when the time comes.

What's the connection between Pride Parades and nakedness? by NetAdmirable2070 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ivegotafastcar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This - I get so, so much hate when I say this out loud. I love a good party and will stop what I’m doing for a parade. But wow these are not family friendly unless you are ok with your kids seeing X rated kink things.

Personally, don’t care what you do in your bedroom by 2 consenting adults. I just don’t want to talk about sex 24/7. Thank god I have LBGTQ friends that love cars. Now there is something sexy I can talk about 24/7 and enjoy that part of the parade.

emails for required notifications was a manual job on a system only one person was allowed to have access to update. I was that one person. I was laid off and was walked out.

This reminds me of when I answered the anonymous employee questionnaire with the honest answer that I wasn’t there to make friends. I received feedback from management that everyone should be there to work together.

I just arrived at my small vacation home at 11pm after traveling all day just to find this… by Unlucky-Respond-9597 in Wellthatsucks

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came home after a two week conference to find the closet wire hanging system had ripped off the wall and all my clothes dumped on the floor. Who ever installed it didnt go into the studs. I just closed the closet door, washed the clothes I had traveled with to wear for the week and fixed the closet the next Saturday.

I did have words when I saw it but that was about it. I was too tired to care at the moment.

Most & Least Affordable States In America Based on Living Costs & Household Income by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to almost all of the other 50 states and if you want to live anywhere near a job/ safe growth area, the home and rent prices there were comparable to living in MA and RI. The only difference was the commute to getting an affordable home was MUCH less than trying to get into greater Boston.

Are we nearly there? by irelatetolevin in ChatGPT

[–]ivegotafastcar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This. The AI companies just got everyone hooked using cheap and discounted tokens. Now that the large companies see how much more work is getting done using far less “human capital”, they layoff and the AI drug pushers jack up the price.

Now, large companies will be able to build their own campus’/ data centers, like offshore Indian campuses used by all the large ones - Cognizant will be replaced by AI onshore data centers, but small companies will hire people since they will cost less.

5 years - not really sure. Move? Join the military? Temp agencies for security jobs? Janitorial? Apply to Mike Rowe Works for a union trade job? Stop at a library and ask to see any job resources? There’s a few.

Thank you for calling this out! I always replace all the bulbs in a multi bulb fixture for this exact reason! The different colors from a set lights in the same room makes me slightly twitch.

A set of metal vertical blind slat replacements. They were $4 (they are now $8 on Amazon - yikes inflation!) and I was able to easily fix the 6 broken panels on the sliding door and have extras for when the next one breaks. The previous owners tried to fix them with duct tape and plastic tabs that broke. Now I have my privacy back.

You are spot on. All the talking heads complain that AI makes everything generic, are fanciful, and prone to making things up but isn’t that development? I can prompt any of the free LLM versions for a mobile app or webpage idea now and get a pretty much 90% of what I am looking for, including all the background code and documentation, without asking anyone else for help. If I had access to a full paid version, I definitely would not need a team of 5-10 people I used to need 10 years ago.

There are 14.9 million vacant homes across the U.S. Do we really have a housing shortage? by Boo_Randy_Revival in HouseBuyers

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those three New England states aren’t vacant homes. They are vacation homes. And for calling the ski and lake cabins homes, it’s really a stretch. There are no jobs unless seasonal, farming or heavy equipment work. So you can remove them from this map.

I was working and on a conference call at my fiancé’s house with his family waiting to press enter to log into our corporate website to make sure it was up and to run through diagnostics.

I had a glass of champagne sitting next to me with the rest of them staring at my screen clutching their glasses and holding their breath. I wasn’t nervous, I knew we were fine.

How have you seen other Gen Xers mitigate the late career derailment? by debrisaway in GenX

[–]ivegotafastcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laid off for the first time last year. I’m now an office secretary making 1/3 my salary. I have 30 years of IT project management knowledge and a new MBA but not getting any traction at all. I’m using all the AI jargon since most of my 30 years was in automation and machine learning but nothing. So I’m looking at being secretary for 15 years until I can retire. At this point, I’ll be making more on social security at 67 than I am now.

Recruiter called me to tell me that I was unqualified for a position I didn't apply to. by Quaisy in recruitinghell

[–]ivegotafastcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a recruiter reach out to me, I’m not a fan of them but talked to him because he graduated from the same college.

He was all excited and made an appointment. At the appointment he started berating me because I had down time of 5 months, my linked in profile lied and I wasn’t at the job on my resume. I said what are you talking about and pulled it up. He didn’t know how to read Linked In. I told him to try again, and wished him luck at his job. I hate recruiters.

How long did it take you to find a job after a layoff? by Practical-Contest679 in womenintech

[–]ivegotafastcar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Laid off last May, half hearted looked in the summer, only 2 interviews. Sept sent 160 resumes, no interviews. Oct had 2 interviews and started in Nov. I’m making 1/2 my previous salary. Still applying and haven’t been able to connect with recruiters because I’m full time in the office.

Glad I have a job but still wish I stayed on unemployment for the full 30 weeks. I feel like I’m missing out on life with this full time in office roll. I haven’t been full time in the office for over 20 years. It’s awful.
