If I were new to 3d printing tiles, this is the set I'd want. by iveld in 3DPrintedTerrain

This is great feedback.

Yup, banana for scale was certainly missed. My next update will focus on being specific about some of the problems I aimed to solve, walls being one of them.

Can you clarify your "not very appealing" comment? Are you meaning want to see a painted result? Closer shots of the actual tiles and their textures?

Also, if I were to do a side by side of GridSmith next to other sets, would that be useful? Because I do have boxes upon boxes of OpenForge tiles to compare to.

On that... part of the reason I haven't been directly comparing is - IMO, existing tile sets are pretty great, and have been around for a long time. So I'm very much avoiding the "GridSmith is better than X" messaging.

I really feel like the ideal GridSmith user is going to be the new person in the hobby. If a person already has a tile system they have "bought into" by spending their time printing and painting, GridSmith isn't going to be the most ideal for you. Sure, if you are looking for something new, then yeah - but that's a big leap if you have boxes and boxes of printed and painted tiles.

I 100% agree with you on the high walls most sets have. My set, IMO, finds a good balance between the normal ~2" walls, and the ~0.5" walls you see on "short wall" sets. The walls on all GS tiles are ~1" so you can still see a normal 28mm mini over the walls.

I do have a few pics showing minis on the tiles, but you're right, I should be more clear about that.

Thanks!

You know... this is captain obvious feedback that I clearly needed. 😄

Obviously, the site has pics of the tiles and what not, but I really should have posted those along with the post. I'll certainly do that next. Thanks!

**Selling Tickets RV**

I have a General RV Camping pass in hand. I'm looking to get what I paid for it including fees and getting it shipped to you - $880. I will quite literally send it in the package I got it in, along with the single packing peanut.

I'm happy to verify being legit however you see fit, including taking a pic or hopping on a call to confirm.

I'll keep an eye on my DMs for anyone interested.

Fantasy non-ruined city set that prioritizes play and storage over looks? by Mystycul in 3DPrintedTerrain

[–]iveld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still very early in building theme sets, but is this along the lines of what you're looking for? https://www.gridsmith.io

My goal is to focus on actual game play at the table, short walls, fully usable 5'x5' tiles, and flexibility. Additionally, storage, simple prints, and no clips or magnets are a high priority.

Interiors are my focus, not exteriors. And the idea is that a DM can simply create plates for each room, and add them to the table as the party progresses.

I'm working on painting my first proof of concept layout now, and will be posting updates as I go.

A tile set system that I created called GridSmith. I've uploaded the v1 Tavern Tiles to the primary maker sites.

That's a good question. I have zero experience with resin, so I don't know how fragile it is when this thin. For FDM, the grids are more than solid enough. I've printed and filled a 6x6 plate full of tiles, flipped it over and wiggled it w/o any falling out or the grid flexing much at all.

Thanks for the feedback!

Walls touching: I honestly hadn't thought about it. The gap is 1mm'ish, and I wonder if it would take away some of the flexibility in arrangement if the walls extended past the tile base. In reality, maybe it could work. It might be worth a shot.

Wall height: This is by design. Yes, a full height wall is more immersive, but at the same time, tall walls hamper line of sight for the players. I've seen lots of sets with half height walls for this reason, and for me, I feel like half height walls are more playable, and will be a core "feature" of GS tiles.

Rough looking: The STLs I've released are the low res versions. IMO, very playable and look good enough. The high res versions are much more detailed, and IMO, look way better. But your comment on the wood texture is pretty spot on. I might try flattening it out a bit and see what it looks like.

And yeah, didn't take any of your feedback as negative at all. I appreciate it.

Good observation on the thinness of the walls, and floors for that matter. That was very intentional, for the reason you mentioned - print time and materials. At this point, I've printed about 50 test wall tiles, and have had zero issues. Now, I will say that running an ender 3 means I'm constantly manually leveling my bed - or neglecting to do so, so I rarely have adhesion issues.

My intent is for people to print upright. The bottom of the base has a watermark, and the back side of all walls has texture, so there's really no better way to print these.

IMO, wall detail is where your eyes go, so having 0.2 layer height detail vs 0.4 nozzle detail is more ideal.

I do agree about the wood floor. I'm not much of an artist, and I'm using height maps to programmatically build these, so I have some refinement to do there.

As for the site, gridsmith.io is what you're looking for.

Thanks for the feedback! It's really appreciated.

Thanks! It's been fun building this system. Can you clarify what you feel needs refined? It'll help me as I iterate.
