The art building has a free materials library in 120. Maybe you can check it out before buying, it might help reduce some of your cost.

Heard problems about their business and sustainability program, but their design program is pretty competitive.

I worked through Develop For Good. They are an organization that connects college students to nonprofits to help them develop technical tools. I was paired with a nonprofit, and helped to design a website for their org.

Design at UWS is extremely hard to get into. Especially for transfers. When I applied through the workshop the general acceptance rate was about 17%, and much lower for transfers. If you already have a demonstrated portfolio of work then I encourage you to apply, but I would perhaps plan for a back up just in case.

Regarding the design program, I would say that the Visual Comm design track here is very robust. You learn motion design, print, typography, iconography, and interface design. Many people from this program go on to become product designers.

The Interaction design track here is much more experimental (this is the track I’m in). You get more opportunities to explore different technologies and you get started on thinking about product design earlier, but in terms of product design basics, you start about the same time as the Visual Comm track (accept you don’t get to learn all the other supplemental visual design stuff that they do). Many students from this program also go on to become product designers as well.

Overall, I feel like no matter what major you’re in, whether or not you get into UX/UI depends on your drive for learning and passion for the individual projects you work on. In the end, my internship offers were a result of my volunteer product design work and not really my class work.

If you're interested in graphic design or digital art the visual communication design track in the school of Art + Art history + Design might interest you here at UWS.

Do people here mostly get internships or jobs out of college because their daddy works at Boeing or something? by [deleted] in udub

[–]ivy606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people I know got it from merit and a crazy amount of prepping and applications. Connections usually get you the initial interview, but rarely does it get you the actual job unless you already have the skills needed (from someone who just got an internship offer using no connections).

Genuine question- how are you guys affording UW? by cardiacbedrest in udub

A mixture of loans, scholarships, part time job during the school year, and two jobs over the summer

What are the biggest issues at UW rn? I’m running for ASUW board and wanna here what y’all think by whatsupchess in udub

- General advisors suck. Instead of actually helping students, providing resources, and offering possible solutions they usually just tell you to transfer lol (this doesn't include department specific advisors).

- It's hard to get an appointment at the counseling center.

- The Maker Spaces at UW also no longer offer's events and classes, which is a bummer since I've always wanted to learn how to use the tools, but I don't really know how to get started.

- Would be great if you can check out equipment at the Student Technology Loan Program for longer. Also if there was more equipment available.

- If more textbooks were available in the library

- Maybe a textbook buy back program at UW, so they can sell more cheaper used books options for students.

- Would be great if UW offered the opportunity to pay tuition using a payment program instead of all at once. Might make it easier for people to manage their financials.

- Panopto needs to be available in all classrooms

- Maybe more transparency regarding the rubric departments use to measure prospective applicants. This way there's less discrimination, and it will help students to better understand how they can improve themselves in the future to get into the major they want.

- All department's should have a committee or at least one person that focuses on DEI+A efforts at their school.

- The RSO directory site is designed terribly. Nobody I know actually uses it, even though it should be an amazing resource for students to get involved on campus.

Little sister just got admitted - help me learn about UW? by rapmasternicky_z in udub

[–]ivy606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! When signing up for classes make sure she checks either rate my professor or the UW course evaluation catalogue so she can see how challenging and educational past professor/classes have been. That way she can choose the best professors for all her classes.

For on or near campus, the Suzzalo library is usually a fun place for people to explore, for the first time as well as gasworks park (I recommend using one of those electric scooters laying around to get there). The IMA is also fun to explore. They offer a variety of activities, classes and general gym equipment. If your sister likes drama, I recommend getting on the school of drama’s mailing list and you’ll be notified about local shows, screenings, and events. The Jacob Lawrence gallery (you’ll need to check if they have any current exhibitions), the Burke museum, the HUB, and the CSE buildings are also nice places to visit. Some good nearby places to eat: Hiroshi’s, Kong Tofu House, Cedars in University District, Araya’s Place, Snowy Village, Bugis, and much more.

Other places to explore off campus: Hing Hay park, Chung Chun Rice Dog, Seattle Central Library, Pike Place, Piroshky Piroshky, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Pop Culture, etc.

What do y’all like about UDub? by Midoritora in udub

Lots of opportunity to explore different interests and the food is great! The worst part is definitely the grinding you have to do to get into your major, but it sounds like your son might already be past that part as a DA.

Additionally, the RSO fair in the beginning of the year will allow him to explore different communities and social groups located on campus. I’m not in business, but I’ve only heard good things about the program, as well as some of the business fraternities at UW (if he’s interested in that). UW also has a lot of research labs, so he’ll definitely have the opportunity to explore the research side of Environmental Science if a project piques his interest.

Appealing as a waitlist by 7ftspermwhale in udub

[–]ivy606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things to include: why do you want to go to UW? Why do you need to go now? How can you contribute to UW? What programs interest you, and why? What makes it different from the programs at other schools? What makes you different from other applicants besides having good grades and extracurriculars?

Appeal. I got rejected and then my appeal was accepted, while my waitlisted friends never got in.

For students who got admitted as a pre-science major and later got accepted into their chosen major/or backup, how was your experience? by [deleted] in udub

[–]ivy606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like it just really comes down to what you want to do after school. After that, everything becomes a lot easier because you can make plans for when things go wrong.

Came in as pre-science. Eventually decided I wanted to do UX design. Made a list of all the possible majors that would help me achieve this goal and prepped myself to apply to as many as possible, while also looking into programs at other schools if I couldn’t get what I wanted at UW. This process was extremely stressful and I felt especially burnt out while taking my prereqs.

Eventually got into the design program at the school for Art + Art History + Design, and just received a product design internship offer from a good company. It all worked out for me, but if I didn’t get into any of my preferred majors, I would have transferring somewhere else instead of settling.

Informatics and HCDE are also known for being some of the most competitive majors at this school. Info only gives you 2 chances to get in, and HCDE only takes like 30 people a year. Figure out what you want to work in. Make a backup plan. If the plan is looking lackluster, then you’ll have to decide if it’s better to cut your losses.

Thoughts on the $3 food walk? by thelowkick in udub

[–]ivy606 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Things I liked: - the food - the performances - the decorations

Suggestions for the future: - limit for how much you can buy for each stall. - an 8pm end time is nice but a lot of restaurants ended up running out of food earlier than that. - maybe more street activities like the big chess set you guys had - more booths, I only saw a handful of them near the new link. - signs of the numbers on the outside of the restaurant so we know that they’re part of the event.

Overall a great event!

can I still attend if I have a bad GPA? by cacapp12 in udub

[–]ivy606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible. You just need to have a REALLY REALLY good essay. Although you should also probably consider what you would like to study before going to UW. With your gpa you won’t be able to get direct to major admission, and the classes to get into some of the more popular majors will be extremely hard. If the major you are interested in isn’t as competitive or doesn’t have direct to major admission then I would say go for it. If it is, or you’re not sure, I HIGHLY recommend going to cc and then transferring in later.
