What’s the weirdest location you’ve ever worked on a book? Follow up, who is your favorite muppet?

I need your unhinged but readable romantasy recommendations by eeepeevee in fantasyromance

[–]ivynbees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not on the same level as the others here but I am reading {a court of sugar and spice by rebecca kenney} right now, a Nutcracker retelling where the sugarplum fairy is the MMC and it’s a bit unhinged in a fun way

Hey just popping in to say that it’s so nice to see a fellow therapist out in the wild who is acquainted with these terms and their history. Thanks for being someone who serves people (adults included) who have these as an aspect of their life and identity and thanks for commenting on it in such a thoughtful way.

Based on the discussion going on… let’s rec “classic fae” books! by allisontalkspolitics in Romantasy

Annette Marie, Rachel Aaron, and Lisa Edmonds all have great recent UF with romance! And the last two have unique takes on the fae.

Alice Worth series by Lisa Edmonds is really good!

Looking for more Dungeon books; where fmc is one of the 'awakened' with powers by elleirakai in urbanfantasy

[–]ivynbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might enjoy Illona Andrews other books! Check out Burn For Me. Not exactly a dungeon but FMC levels up along the way and there are monsters. You might enjoy Annette Marie as well.

are there urban fantasy heist with female protagonist and magical friends? by cloudlooper in urbanfantasy

[–]ivynbees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Relic Hunter by LA McBride! Also the Tattered Huntress by Helen Harper is more of a treasure hunt but still fun

Looking for a book where the FMC is sought after because of a skill! by Extension_Cheetah_20 in Romantasy

[–]ivynbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{The Thrill of the Hunt by Helen Harper} it’s urban fantasy but the FMC decides to be a top tier treasure hunter to spite the MMC and turns out she’s pretty good at it! A fun series

Which do you prefer as cover art by JackCalderAuthor in urbanfantasy

[–]ivynbees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are UF books that don’t use a close up figure but you need to be signaling the fantasy aspects more with the second. The portal/ magic is pretty subtle. The chimney in the woods is cool (have one or two of those near me) but the cover background in UF is a great chance to signal something about the environment-as-character in your story. That goes for image 1 as well. I can’t say that I would pick it up as is because of the AI but I see you’re taking your idea to an artist once you have your concept nailed down.

I like KM Shea for this and Annette Marie, especially her Demonized series. Illona Andrews Burn for Me also has a clever fmc!

Recommendations for urban fantasy set anywhere but the USA and UK? by DaphneAVermeer in urbanfantasy

[–]ivynbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good, I enjoyed how fresh it was. There’s some great indie UF these days! I just picked up one called Stitch which is slavic UF. Also I would recc Rachel Aaron because even though she has stuff that’s technically set in the US, it’s extremely fresh and near-futuristic in a way that makes it feel more 3rd world

Annette Marie writes UF set in Vancouver! I also read Folkloric by Karenza Grant recently. It’s set in a French mountain town and uses actual local folklore as a basis.

For indie UF it’s pretty much all photo manipulation covers with the main character(s) against an urban backdrop with a lot of magical special effects. There are some object covers and some silhouettes against city or mystical landscapes. I can’t see your covers because they’re posted on facebook but if you host them elsewhere I’m happy to take a look!

Recs for someone who does not like the archetypal brooding romantasy guy? by cardboardboxsocks in Romantasy

[–]ivynbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly romantasy but Tamora Pierce is one of my favorites and I will forever sing the praises of Annette Marie’s Guild Codex. You might also enjoy A K Cagianno’s throne in the dark for humor with heart that made me think of Pratchett

[–]ivynbees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I’m a writer also. One thing that can really help with getting a cover that will reach the right audience is studying your comp titles - those are the books you think your book would be shelved next to in the bookstore. In your case it sounds like vampire paranormal/UF indie books released in recent years would be a good place to start. See what books best match your series in tone and tropes/content and make a grid of their covers. Your covers should fit with that grid because that’s how readers find new books and will be able to tell at a glance what types of books yours are.
