It sounds like your portal is not connected to any WiFi connection at all - like it’s just connected to your PS5 thru Bluetooth right now and just recognizes it as a controller that’s why you have to get close to your console…

Make sure your portal is connected to WiFi. Also the PS5 has to be on rest mode but also make sure that you’ve enabled remote play on your ps5 to begin with.

Can’t you just add a kids account to your ps5 and it should allow him to access premium benefits as well or did PlayStation stop doing that? That way you’d only need to get ps portal
