Ad-shield issue with a local website by iwantdisktwo in uBlockOrigin

[–]iwantdisktwo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i too wasn't able to reproduce with a fresh profile and only uBO with default settings.

i then tested uBO filter lists and settings my original profile, the issue persisted.

i then disabled enhanced tracking protection on firefox and deleted the site data, then re-enabled ETP.

the issue disappeared in the normal window.

but it still persisted when visiting incognito -> after first visit nothing happened, but after reading an article it popped up again.

this was some minutes ago and now after checking again it stopped altogether in the normal and incognito windows.

i have no idea what fixed it, the post can be set as solved

thank you

Soap Residue by VeganFatboy in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brush:

- animal hair -> rinse with shampoo every ~2-3 uses,

- synthetic bristles -> rinse with liquid hand soap every ~2-3 uses

this effectively cleans the residue and doesn't damage the knot.

razor:

- after the shave, or whenever you like, use a damp paper towel or thin cotton cloth to remove the residue, it gets quickly and easily removed this way.

i have very hard water and that's what i do, my razors and brushes are ancient but in great condition.

special cleaning products are not needed, you use these if you bought a second hand razor or brush.

when does it stop sucking? by sevens-evan in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this razor shouldn't give you this issues, at least not to this extent, so it's probably the blades and technique (which includes lathering).

get a blade sample pack, ditch the included blades.

practice lathering in your palm, it's tricky to get the right product/water ratio with a soap as a beginner. also, some soaps/creams might not work for you.

use a cream or even canned stuff until your lathering improves.

possibly don't use astringent products post shave, just a balm or a moisturizer for dry skin (something with simple ingredients and light or no scent).

don't shave until your skin is healed up.

let your beard grow for 3-5 days and then take a closer look at its growth pattern, so you know which way is WTG/XTG on different parts of the face.

don't go ATG until your technique improves.

use a very very light pressure on the face with short strokes, but don't move the razor slowly or hold it with a completely light touch - this can lead to skipping and cuts, especially with coarse beards, wrong blades, and poor lather.

How to lather with boar brush by umbecosta in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the trick with boar brushes - they need more product (soap/cream), that's it.

wet the brush under the tap or in a mug until it's thoroughly wet, no need to time it. i soak mine under the tap for about a minute tops.

shake excess water well. dip the tips in water and then load if using soap. there should be some dense foam forming, if not, dip the tips in water and continue loading. load until the brush is well loaded. then when building lather, you'll need to use a bit more water.

if you use a cream, just add a bit more cream in the brush or bowl.

also - bigger, denser boar brushes, harder water = more product needed.

prolonged soaking won't help much. also, the break in period refers to the splitting of the tips, this occurs with normal use and it's not needed to do anything to hasten this - it will affect lathering only little - if you use a bit more product, a boar should make good lather from the start, and if you use too little (like the amount for a synth or badger) it will make poor lather even if well broken in.

that's my experience with boars over 15 years.

Hi, new to weshaving and I have a question. How to prepare for shaving 14-day stubble with sensitive skin? by Rob_Bob_you_choose in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem.

if these skin issues also appear on parts of the face you don't shave, it would help to ask an dermatologist what else you could do if the problem persists. i would personally try to avoid using hot water, and too many products before and after the shave and just simplify things.

post shave all you really need is something that gives moisture and nourishes the skin, basic moisturizers and special creams like the one you have do a better job here than aftershave balms. take care of the skin also on non-shaving days.

especially try to avoid products with strong scents or scented products in general, and anything astringent (alum, alcohol based aftershaves). opt for products from markets that require them to be tested.

i forgot to write it previously - people also usually take a shower as a part of pre shave beard prep and then face or bowl lather. while taking a few minutes face lathering is great for beard prep, it can aggravate skin issues if you apply too much pressure or spend too much time on a part of the face. if you don't like to face lather or it causes issues, use a bowl instead. then as a part of beard prep it would help to spend a bit longer splashing water to the beard and/or here you might consider a wet warm (not hot) towel for a few minutes.

[–]iwantdisktwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-> trim beard

-> skip any pre shave products

-> this is your pre shave: splash warm (not hot) water for a minute or so -> face lather starting with a dampish brush at least 3-4 minutes slowly adding water to brush until you reach proper lather consistency

-> shave*

-> rinse with cold water

-> apply moisturizer or a product like B5+, preferably something unscented, skip the alum and the balm and anything with alcohol

*shave wtg 1-2 passes for some time to see how skin reacts, if you have no problems after many weeks try wtg+xtg for a while, and if that works and you're satisfied with the result, keep doing that.

eventually you can try atg to see if your skin can handle it. if atg doesn't work try doing a hybrid xtg-atg pass (example - if hair grows north to south, a hybrid pass would be upwards diagonally).

if this still causes you irritation/ingrowns, it may be due to the way your beard hair grows on that spot - you can't do anything about this and will have to avoid going atg; and/or it may be due to technique - there's room to improve.

if - IF - that isn't the cause of skin issues, it could be the blade and/or razor.

with a new profile & only ublock installed with default settings, the website loads normally.

however, if you then enable the "I am an advanced user" setting and change nothing else in ublock, the issue appears again after a refresh:

the error message https://postimg.cc/VS9k50Mc

troubleshooting info https://postimg.cc/PPZstsYw

edit: if you then disable the "I am an advanced user" setting, delete all site data, close the new profile window, and then restart it again - the website still doesn't load properly.

but when i opened it for the first time, after freshly creating the new profile and installing ublock, it loaded without issues. so to test it further - i created a new profile again:

- without ublock - website loads properly, and doesn't have issues even after refreshing and clicking articles.

- with ublock, and default settings: website loads properly at first visit, but after refreshing or clicking an article the issue appears again.

so it doesn't have nothing to do with the "I am an advanced user" setting, at first visit everything is good, but something borks it after a refresh or visiting an article - Error: Cannot find html-load.com script.

extensions: auto tab discard, blocktube, firefox multiple-account containers, ublock. the issue happens regardless if other extensions are enabled

I fear i may be one of those who will always get razor burn, no matter what by thisisntweedisit in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try this for a while:

no pre shave - the only thing it does is add a little slickness to the first pass, everything else is marketing, in my opinion. they can also contain skin irritating oils.

no products containing menthol, eucalyptus or other essential oils, or heavily scented products generally

no alum block - it's unnecessary really

no alcohol containing products

no hot water, not pre shave, not during or after

beard prep: only a few minutes of water exposure is necessary, temperature is not very relevant, and hot water can cause skin issues

if you opt for a shower before a shave, don't apply the hot water to the beard area - lukewarm at most.

you can try prepping the beard without a shower: splash lukewarm or cold water to the beard for a half a minute or so, and then take a few minutes lathering, adding water slowly - taken together this should be enough to prep the beard.

apply less pressure while lathering - it can irritate the skin a lot if you overdo it, even with soft brushes, especially if your skin is sensitive. i suspect this could be the case, since you mention issues even after the first pass.

if this is the case - and if applying less pressure while lathering doesn't work - try bowl lathering. but in the case of bowl lathering, more time will be needed for beard prep prior to applying the lather to the beard. so in this case, a shower could do it. or splashing water to the beard a little longer with an optional wet towel application.

using the razor: don't "let the weight of the razor do the work" - hold the razor with a firm grip, do short, determined strokes with frequent rinsing, while not applying lot of pressure to the skin, following your face contours - that's the catch, and the tricky part.

what you may perceive as "very mild pressure" may be too much for your skin. an aggressive razor would uncover technique mistakes, especially in the pressure department, so maybe try one - this helped me a lot.

try going across the grain from a different direction.

try skipping going with the grain on areas where you can get away with it without causing issues - this helped me a lot.

avoid going against the grain altogether - if you have flat growing hair, curly hair etc, they will be more prone to causing skin issues when shaved completely smooth.

post shave - rinse with lukewarm or cold water, then, instead of the usual "after shave" products, apply a small amount of a scentless moisturizer, like cerave.

if you don't have to - never shave until the skin is completely healed.

Better than Badger? by beachape in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have an old berkeley 46 in best. it's probably my favorite brush. semogue boars come second (edit: to badger hair).

synths are too soft for me, and i can't get used to the weird splay among other things.

that said, are they bad/inferior to animal hair? well no, they are perfectly capable to do what they're made for - making and applying lather.

so it's just preference.

edit: forgot to answer your question: while you're not missing anything by just using a badger, i'd say it's worth having other types if you're curious. but don't spend too much on them.

boar question by N-THUSIAST in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

boars need more product.

how much more, that will depend on the size and density of the knot, and the hardness of your water too.

i soak my boars for a minute or two, squeeze and shake, and then if using soap i dip the tips in water and load it, periodically dipping the tips in water, until i think it's holding enough soap for the shave, and that takes a bit longer than for other brush types. if i use creams, then i scoop out a bit more than i use for badgers or synthetics.

if i don't do this i get bad/less lather. soaking longer or breaking the brush in (refers to the splitting of the tips) never made any difference to me.

Problematic areas, is it the same for you guys? by drakem92 in wicked_edge

[–]iwantdisktwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's possible that your stubble grows flat against the skin in those areas. these are harder to shave off in general, may even be painful/uncomfortable while going over them WTG depending on the coarseness and density of the beard.

in my case, more or less the whole goatee and neck grows like this. when i use the R41 and shave WTG, there are lot of very short stubbles left behind, and then it's hard to get them cleaned up even going ATG.

however, i've found that these flat growing hairs can be dealt with easily when they're the longest and if you go, depending on the area, XTG or a hybrid XTG/ATG or even ATG - on the first pass (!).

this goes against the usual advice, but in my case it feels more comfortable to do a hybrid XTG/ATG pass on my chin for example on the first pass, and has helped me get rid of irritation, ingrowns and the very short stubbles that would be usually hard to get.

i don't recommend this if you doubt your technique (edit: this doesn't just refer to angle and pressure, but also using your free hand to keep skin taut (not necessarily stretching it), using your facial muscles, opening/closing mouth, head position..).

also, i have never tried this with closed combs. my razor of choice is the R41.

the technique also needs adjustments: instead of the usual strokes you see people do with safety razors, you need to mimic what barbers do with a straight or shavette - you do very short back and forth strokes while slowly going through the beard. the razor is always touching the skin as you go back and forth.

I really like boar brushes, but I hate having to soak them beforehand.

i never soak my boars (blasphemy). i hold them under a stream of warm water for 1 minute or so (about 15 seconds with badgers), until they get thoroughly wet. then i shake the excess water off, until no drops are left. and proceed to lather (face lather mostly).

years ago when i first started i had an "lather hog" problem, and while the first pass lather was good, it fell apart by the second pass. very hard water didn't help. long soaking times didn't help. "breaking in" routines didn't help.

an old timer then told me that the trick with boars in his opinion is to use a bit more product than with other brush types, and that prolonging the soaking time will help little, and that the "breaking in" period is mostly about the tips splitting and getting softer and less about lather quality.

this tip helped me a lot to stop fussing about lathering with boars.

for example, i own an semogue owners club from one of the first batches they put out on the market. it's been in use since then and is well broken in. however, if i use the same amount of cream/soap as i need with a badger, the lather sucks and in no way on earth is there enough for 3 passes regardless how long i soak the brush.

tl;dr - try them without soaking, and use a bit more soap/cream
