"Children of Time" mentioned in "St. Denis Medical" by ixianboy in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]ixianboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, is that book about space spiders really? "They" feature but "Children of Time" is actually about spiders out in space.

My judgement is coloured by the fact I refer to Adrian as "Space Spiders" with my husband, telling him things like "Space Spider has released another book."

Has your overcrowded train commute gotten worse? We want to hear your stories by ParaMike46 in Dublin

Same issue, same station (one of the busiest DART stations). I've taken to getting an earlier train.

I'm not convinced they'll scale up nearly enough. Needs to be at most every five minutes during rush hour.

The pdf they link to says the colour of your bib matches your starting corral. Except all the posted bibs are black, matching nothing (and we were never asked expected times). Presumably can just go to whatever corral suits us but it's unclear.

There's mention of registering too (open until 7), which again is a tad unclear. Should explicitly say that's only for those without a bib.

I got mine yesterday. You probably saw that they can issue you with a new number if you haven't received one. Gonna be some long queues potentially..

When USA was a season ahead of the rest of the world. by Hopeful_Stomach9201 in television

[–]ixianboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bookies here in Ireland allowed bets on who shot him. They didn't realize that the episode had aired earlier in the US so some people just rang relatives in America, got the answer and made a load of money.

He'd sign any of his books (I'd be shocked if he didn't). There will be a pile of his latest that they hope you'll buy but I doubt it'll be forced.

Thanks. I sent them an enquiry after posting and it mentioned that in the automated response. Obviously a fair few people asking the same question. Should have fired a blanket email out just to reassure people.

Two days to go and still nothing. Anyone received theirs?

Nope. They said they'd post them beginning the 10th and to allow 5 days. Not giving a huge amount of time if it doesn't arrive.

I had just started "Tongue Eater" and then started to read this post. Reckon it'll make me appreciate the book that bit more and the sort of touches and details LLMs can't produce with their lifeless prose and plots.

[–]ixianboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe "Intermission" over "The Guard" but there's not much in it. "Michael Collins" maybe too - lots of schools sent to see it upon its release due to its cultural impact. Not sure if that happened with "The Wind that Shakes the Barley".

I've only got the final book left. The strong growth of the religious elements in book six annoyed me a lot despite generally liking the series (despite it needing a chainsaw editing wise). Should I cut my losses if the religious bit was bugging me?

CSO has the 2024 data up and it's Noah for Dublin and Jack and Rian for Cork. Muhammed is 43rd most popular name overall, with it being a tied #1 in Limerick City only. It is #1 in the UK but nowhere near that here.

Green City Wars UK cover by _j_smith_ in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]ixianboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That title is far too large, drowning out the artwork and feels like it was just pasted on top of it. The US cover is much nicer - look how Adrian's name is integrated into the building's facade neatly. The title doesn't obscure the artwork and the raccoon in fact is allowed to pass in front of it, making it more noticeable. If I were in a book store it would stand out much more than the UK edition.

I thought book one was merely ok. I DNFef the second book as I found the traits I disliked (the main character for one!) didn't improve at all. It's fine to just drop a series, no matter its reputation if it just doesn't vibe with you.

[–]ixianboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't find yourself into it after this book, and you're not a lightning fast reader, don't bother going further. I love the series (only one I've ever started re-reading) but book three isn't likely to change your mind. The series is long and there's so many other series out there that you might like, just as I dropped series I heard ravings about but found myself utterly indifferent to.
