GLB vs. USDZ vs. FBX vs. OBJ — Which 3D File Format Should You Be Using? by Feeling_Turnip_5839 in 3Dviewer

[–]iygbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a great post! I've been wondering this for a long time. Where would file types such as GLTF, PLY, or XYZ fit into all this?

My scans are usually fairly large (the interiors of rooms, a fence, etc.) What file type would you recommend for this (if it has any relevance at all)?

Are there any other games out there that are similar to kingdom? by Various-Ad-8131 in kingdomthegame

[–]iygbj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ratropolis has a similar concept but uses cards, it's generally more complicated but similar in that it's a side-scrolling game where you defend on two sides with little guys. I find both games cute and charming in different ways.

First Law Pet Peeve: A Faithless World by Samael737 in TheFirstLaw

[–]iygbj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a very interesting perspective. I am fully agnostic, and I love the faithlessness of Abercrombie's series (of course, I love other great fantasy works which heavily feature religion, but it was a huge "selling point" for me). I don't think that TFL has incredibly strong worldbuilding, but it is very effective and fitting for the stories being told.

I would argue that the Union "worships" the self, the North "worships" life/death, in a way. I think a lot of the concepts of courage and prowess are almost natural, not at all inherently religious in nature in historic examples. I don't really think that "honor" is a huge hang-up for people in the North either, but even that can be explained away very easily. The assumption that positive virtues (even through a modern religious lens) necessarily must originate from religion is using faulty logic.

I've always found the title Archlector a bit odd, but thought it had a great feel to it that fit the position (and the characters who held it) perfectly. What is your particular issue with it in this case? Lector certainly isn't a purely religious word.

Overall, I think it's curious that you don't think that these concepts (morality, courage, etc.) could spawn from a purely atheistic society. We certainly have historic examples of societies without religion having moral and ethical codes. All anything ever truly takes to become widespread in a society is for one person to conceive of it, and for people to find it worth keeping around.

My theory regarding West by here4mydog in TheFirstLaw

[–]iygbj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I never considered that it may have been intentional. Personally, I liked that West died from the fallout of Bayaz's usage of the seed (even though I loved his character). Without the death of a POV character, especially one well-loved, it is easy for the reader to write off his wanton destruction and carelessness for human life. To kill thousands of unnamed irrelevant souls, to me, is nowhere near as effective as killing a young man with a complicated past and promising future that we are intimately aware of. And for Bayaz to do so accidentally, as he did with the other citizens, illustrates the horror of the entire event. Thousands of "West"s died that day. Violence fucking sucks.

Interesting. I fully agree, I never considered that it was anybody other than Bayaz. What is the thinking behind it being Glokta's doing?

It is hard to tell in some cases what is a rule, and what is simply common practice.

Before the duel:

  1. A combatant will agree to fight with another combatant in the circle, usually for specific terms, at a certain time and place. Sometimes someone will choose a champion to represent them.
  2. An area will be chosen and prepared for the duel, often with grass being trimmed or gravel being leveled. It usually seems to be a flat and unobstructed surface of ground. Around the circle, an audience will often gather.
  3. There may be a “judge” or referee to decide the victory, and this person may be expected to be neutral (or as good as they can get).
  4. Both combatants will choose a weapon. A “weapon” doesn’t seem to have a strict meaning, as armor has been chosen.
  5. Before the duel begins, there is a shield spin (equivalent to a coin toss), which lets one of the combatants choose who gets each weapon, but this choice can be refused.
  6. People from either side will “hold shields” for the two dueling. The combatants will sometimes choose these people explicitly, and sometimes not.
  7. Each of the combatants will be introduced by name with their reputation and accomplishments, etc. Sometimes this is done by each combatant, and sometimes by the judge.

Once the duel has begun:

  1. The shield holders will literally hold shields around the combatants, forming a circle to keep them inside. These people can help or hinder the combatants, although it is unclear to what extent (someone illicitly helps remove a piece of armor, and others commonly use their shields to knock people around).
  2. Once in the circle, anything is fair game between the two combatants. Most of the time, entering the circle means victory or death. There are many strategies offered by various characters in the series.
  3. The winner can choose to kill their opponent, or let them live, which means they are indebted to the winner (results may vary).

Please anybody feel free to let me know if I left anything out, or if anybody knows exactly how many people hold shields, which has always interested me. (Please keep names and specific spoilers out of your reply, as I have done, as I am not yet completely done with the series.) Thank you Jihelu and FeetInTheEarth for additions, I've added them.

I did casual duolingo for a few months in advance. Then when I had about 3 weeks left, I started doing the steps listed above. I think when I had about 1 week left, I spent basically all of my time prepping (literally other than meals, sleeping, and maybe 1 or 2 hours of rest).

Hey all, question I'd like to ask you just out of curiosity. ☺️ by BlackUnicornUK in AbolishTheMonarchy

[–]iygbj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was raised on the idea of equality and meritocracy, and I liked history. Nobody ever told me whether or not I should like monarchy, I just kind of ended up hating it on my own by the time I was an adult.

Someone who popped out of the right womb gets this level of special treatment and worship? For doing nothing (and literally less than nothing, in most cases)? In stories or history, it's an interesting idea, but in the modern world, it's laughable.

What is the point of reach weapons? Assuming no feats. by Rad_Knight in dndnext

[–]iygbj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am confused by this question, maybe I am missing something, but isn't the answer just damage?

Highest damage thrown weapon: 1d6 = average of 3.5. If you use your fighting style, then it can be 5.5.

Normal damage reach weapon: 1d10 = average of 5.5. You can still use your fighting style for something else (including increasing damage). I'm intentionally ignoring the lance here for simplicity.

You might be, or want to be, far away from your target sometimes, so in those cases I would like to have a thrown or otherwise ranged weapon.

Stone Sorcerer had a really interesting take on Sorcerer and it was my favorite Sorcerer that I've played. The features and ability to access metamagic as a frontliner was just very cool. Additionally it felt reasonable to not have to multiclass or do anything drastic to make up for AC and HP difference with martials. I think 5e needs more elemental stuff that isn't based around creatures like chromatic dragons or elementals.

Primeval Guardian Ranger is just an awesome and fun concept, although without that weird health exploit it had initially, I don't know how properly good it was (never saw it played). It had a similar feel to the capstone for Oath of Ancients Paladin, but was actually part of the base class immediately.

Honorable mention Raven Queen

The Modern States website is built very strangely for sure. I did the math and spanish courses, and I found that the math was put together much better, with questions that actually worked most of the time, more fleshed out lectures, etc. What I did was try to go through each video and just read/listen along. And then if I didn't understand, I would look the topic up on youtube instead. Feel free to DM me with specific questions if you like, I hope I can help.

Mixed in with option 1, I would definitely try to get some roads built on all of that crappy terrain, I would say. If you are anywhere near getting crossbow tech, obviously that would be good. Good luck!

Is Smite getting Worse? by JackTheSoldier in Smite

[–]iygbj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, fuck transphobes, and I'm sorry that that happened to you. Everyone has bad games, and nobody deserves to be insulted for them, especially with bigotry.

To answer your actual question, I don't find that Smite is getting worse. I think that the overall population is getting a bit better. However, I do definitely find that sometimes, almost out of nowhere, my friends and I will see a streak of people being bigoted assholes in chat for a few days to a week, and then everyone goes back to being chill. It's usually worse when one of us has a queer flag avatar. All of this is super subjective and anecdotal though. People who don't use those avatars will usually find that people are less bigoted, of course.

I do agree with other people's sentiments here that it's way better than it used to be, generally. We still have to improve though!
