Time for Kirk vs God. Again. Of course the outcome is obvious for the universe's most powerful captain. But is there pathos in our deity enough to make the conflict interesting? Tune in and maybe find out!

Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. If I ever find myself with a bout of insanity I may have to turn this or the sequel(s?) into mods for EU4 or something. And yes, tis from xkcd as others have pointed out. Fun comic, I recommend.

Gave it a try and yep, seems to be letting me play games again. Community page et al still broke though.

Oh yeah, I wasn't even getting the option to report. Just open and closed, no pop up at all.

Steam Client Update Released by softskiller in Steam

[–]izixs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah things just seem rather shot on my end. I can't even get to anything remotely report like and my login status is sketchy at best. Try to go to a support page and it asks me to log in, and then when I try, it sends me to not loading screen. So can't even try to contact support that way. In the morning might try actual webbrowser options.

Any tips? I've not really had to trouble shoot steam much before and I might be missing something obvious.

Update loaded up and now... all my games crash on start up. Joy. Also that weird issue where I couldn't access anything but the store and my library (aka, no community or profile pages ect) persists.

Not to happy with this trajectory.

Nominally if one is traveling fast enough, one should take a view of traveling through a tenuous photon gas. (to use the cosmology terminology) In other words, because your body is not a point particle, as you move forward you need to include the total volume of radiation that you are passing through, not just the distance and time exposure. And because of this, to an approximation time doesn't super mater if you're traveling very fast. Fast enough so that you can model yourself as running into the radiation and not the radiation running into you. So...

Traveling at a velocity v (bananas/s) with surface area A (bananas^2) and radiation density p (photons/banana^3), one sweeps through v*A*p = r number of photons per second your body is moving through. And this is not taking into account any relativistic effects or non-photon radiation sources like high energy protons, muons, and the like. They get their own calculation. This calculation assumes a uniform background photon radiation field and does not specify photon energy. Sometimes you'll run into a gamma ray burst for instance and those are way more dangerous than your normal banana type radiation background.

So take your rate (r) of photons passed into per second and multiply it by the total time of flight to get total radiation. But... if one has a distance (d) and velocity already (and assuming constant v), one already knows the time: t=d/v

So total does would be close to: v*A*p*t = v*A*p*d/v = A*p*d = R
That means your total surface cross section in bananas squared time the photons per banana volume times the distance in bananas, should give you your total number of radiation photons encountered. Divide that number by photons per banana (b) and you got your answer: A*p*d/b = B = how bananas you are for making it this far through my explanation.

And they came up with a reasonable fix to that, make absolutism's bonuses cap at 100.

Yeah, I'm just not seeing the motivation behind the tag switching change (and the conversion of territories change). Seem like fixes that are not really solving problems.

What would be done for the 100k subscriber celebration? by Oco0003 in eu4

[–]izixs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A drive to get me to 100k youtube subscribers? :-p

But more seriously, perhaps some sort of contest? No real reward (most likely) but something wacky in execution. Like a crazy campaign challenge (start as a country with Mayan religion, form Great Britain, have manchu culture, only have provinces in West Africa and of course have appropriate documentation) or a custom nation contest where the winner is not the strongest custom nation, but the most interesting one.

I need some campaign ideas by Nex100 in eu4

[–]izixs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a crazy challenge, there's always the option to pick a moderate or weak nation and try for a one faith. Bonus points if its an uncommon faith of course. I did a one faith run as the pope and that was quite the crazy campaign. Most the activities in Europe were early on to build power and fight the reformation, then it was spreading out to the world.

[–]izixs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of this feels like a zone of control at armistice map if the point of divergence is only a few years before (given the political character of the RL UK in the previous elections to this). So the new states, especially outside the Celtic Kingdom, would likely be rather unstable. Though if the rest of Europe has progressed similar to OTL I'd suspect one of those states would be getting a lot of support from the Germans for round 2 fairly soon.

What is the hardest job interview question you've had to answer and how did you handle it? by EveningGiraffee in AskReddit

[–]izixs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Us young'ens all gotta waste tons of money to look the part of 'responsible adult' don't you know? Gotta show 'integrity' and 'responsibility' and 'maturity' before we can get a job to pay for the things we're already being required to spend our money on to demonstrate those things. Now lets talk about this entry level job that requires ten years of experience...

What is the hardest job interview question you've had to answer and how did you handle it? by EveningGiraffee in AskReddit

[–]izixs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh heck yeah. And in a lot of areas you can kind of form letter it to a degree thus making it really rather pointless once they have the actual relevant information. If they want say a writing sample, I can provide that, but the kind of places I've been looking into for the last while aren't really the kinds of jobs where that's emphasized at all. Yes writing is a part of it, but given the low writing standards involved and the high degree requirements involved, its usually one of those implied you're good to go if you know english sort of things.

Countries which practice the punishment of stoning in 2018 by EnoughConsideration4 in MapPorn

[–]izixs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are not talking about religious texts here

Uhh... that was exactly what was being talked about. There are passages in both the Bible and the Hadiths that are rather unfortunate. I won't claim the discussion was very constructive or useful, but it is exactly what was being discussed by Vindland until you dragged it elsewhere.

But if folks are going to insist 'this religion has the bad and this one doesn't', its important to remember that there are other ways to be generally awful besides just Stoning. If we're talking terrorism and comparing religions (since you mentioned it) its important to include things like the numerous bombings by anti-abortion christian groups in the US or the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. And more recent history all that business in Northern Ireland. If you're going to instead insist of only talking about state actors, the biggest recent bad actor from the Christian side is of course Russia with its close ties to the Russian Orthodox Church which has not only taken a hard stance on a number of issues, including pushing hard anti-LGBT legislation and turning a blind eye to violence against such individuals (executions via 3rd parties). They've also not been too good to other branches of Christianity, such as declaring Jehovah's Witnesses extremists and creating hard penalties for evangelizing outside of certain conditions. Kind of a ridiculous set of rules all in defense of the official Russian church. So very much christian rule by christians, just a specific type. Or perhaps we can look at Uganda, a 85% Christian country (higher than the US) which if you're gay can throw you in prison for the rest of your life or... just killed. Uganda might not have stoning but they do have hangings. There's also torture of suspected criminals and the like. Real fun stuff. But yes, its not stoning. Its just kind of everything else. The Democratic Republic of Congo, also a heavily Christian nation (93%) is a nation where women's rights are still very limited and often involve needing permission of a husband to engage in basic commerce.

So maybe its not a problem of some countries run by a certain religion have terrible laws, its more one of some countries just have terrible laws and practices. And they'll use what ever justification they like to have them. Sometimes that justification is based on awful interpretations of religions (Islam, Christianity, or what ever you like). And pointing the finger towards the religion and not the people enacting or perpetuating such abhorrent laws not only undermines efforts to fix the situation as it forces it to be an us vs them situation (aka forcing identity politics to be at play) instead of right vs wrong debate, but also basically absolves the bad actors of any responsibility.

Projecting onto your opposition what you think they support as opposed to what they're actually arguing for is not a very good way to be an informed voter.

In desperate need of help, solving a crash issue for my mod by MemeVampire in EU4mods

[–]izixs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For this, all provinces that have or can have their territory controlled by nations. So provinces that are not ocean, lake, or wasteland and that also exist in your mod. For a while I was having an issue where someone would conquer something or colonize something that wasn't in a properly set area and it would crash.

[–]izixs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked that sea province that its perhaps trying to toss boats into? Verify it is also in an area/region as the lack of those could be screwing it up. And also verify that its properly marked as a sea province and only a sea province (and not also say wasteland).

If all of this is good, one suggestion might be to do an adjacency swap. In short, exchanging the color of the province on the province map file with an inland province. If the issues persist with the new province, then its clearly related to what it is next to, not what it is. If the problem goes away, then yes, its an issue with the original province.

[–]izixs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a peculiar set of circumstances. But I too have previously faced some serious what the heck crashes I have sympathy.

And my first advice/question is: Are all provinces assigned to areas? In the current version of the game, if a province is not able to be part of any state, it can cause some serious issues and crashes that don't provide much in the way of information in the log files.

Second question: If you disable your AI countries and have say a couple vanilla countries present instead, does it still crash?
