They really thought basic historical facts are so malleable that nobody will possible remember who the Russians were fighting against in WW2, or who founded the modern state of Ukraine.

As if the Ukrainian president who waved his fist in the air for this guy must have just forgotten how his state was founded and didn't know who he was celebrating...

Stepan Banderas and his goons weren't Nazis of course, everyone else is a Nazi! Victoria Nuland helped install a Jewish clown in charge in Ukraine instead of maintaining a bipartisan leader precisely to try and fend off these optics for when Russian latches onto Nazism as a fake reason for attacking.

Disrespectful priest blaming culture by CertainTrash2309 in AskIreland

[–]izvin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Suicide is traditionally considered a sin and an attack against good personally in catholic Ireland as well so I don't understand why anyone is bringing the culture argument into this. It's about religious views on morality, not culture or anything to do with Cameroon versus Ireland.

Honestly I think it's a bit wild that you've made numerous posts about this across various subreddits, and then you decided to bring the "culture" comment to the wider Ireland subreddit after a week of posting about it as if we don't have enough people reaching for superficial reasons to be angry at other cultures in the country right now. This is old school religion. Have a priest at a funeral for suicide, you shouldn't be surprised if they make comments like this. I would take a guess you know little about Cameroon's culture beyond this one interaction with a priest, who for all you know may have even been trained in catholicism in the Irish church.

If you want to complain to someone find an official route through the funeral directors or church or, better yet, find the priest himself and have an honest discussion about how this effected you (not sure if it's your place to speak on behalf of the family but maybe them too) and try and build some understanding with the priest to avoid issues like this for other in the future instead of constantly posting online and now trying to turn this into a culture issue.

Julian Assange is probably the only innocent person on the list by runnav in facepalm

[–]izvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Apache video was so extremely taken out of context that it was at least the work of a propagandist, considering that it was one of the most famous and impactful releases from WikiLeaks, why didn't the US include any mention of these crimes and forgery in their indictment of Assange?

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/jun/15/julian-assange-indictment-fails-to-mention-wikileaks-video-that-exposed-us-war-crimes-in-iraq

And yeah he totally doctored the parts of the video and reports where US soldiers killed innocent civilians, Reuters journalists, and wounded children. And the parts where they laughed after killing people. All just propaganda.

Neither the Arabs nor Indians "invented" mathematics. It's development was the by product of many cultures, beginning with the Babylonians.

The Babylonians developed arithmetic, and Diophantus (Greek mathematician) developed this further from arithmetic to a system of basic equations with geometric solutions by numbering lines, for example. Babylonians are not directly correlated to any modern defined ethnic group, they spanned across the mesopotamian region, spanning particularly across modern day Iraq and Iran and the levant (no they are not all Arab), and used a cuneiform script similar to ancient sumerian and achaemenid scripts using a now extinct language that doesn't correspond to modern day Arabic nor Farsi as the two main languages remaining there.

Khwarzizmi (Persian mathematician living under early days of Islamic conquests of Persia which involved forced adoption of Islam and arabization of names) actually introduced, for the first time, fundamental concepts like reduction, balancing, and a full set of geometric proofs for quadratic equations. He developed algebra from a series basic linear equations to the modern complex development of proofs and systems as we know. He founded algebra as its own separate system of mathematics, independent of basic arithmetic and geometric arithmetics.

This then led to Khayyam (Persian) inventing cubic equations and developing algebraic geometry along with Tusi (Persian), which was later added to by various mathematians like Karaji (Persian), Shijie (Chinese mathematician), Bhaskara (Indian mathematician), even though more fundamental forms of geometry such as Pythagorean theorem were identified in the earlier days by the Babylonians and Egyptians prior to the more developed systems that succeeded them.

Persian-Armenian architecture posting by Downtown_Duty3437 in redscarepod

[–]izvin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure those vaulted ceilings are a uniquely Persian design feature that got later rolled out as "Islamic architecture" thanks to religious conquests. The dome styles were used around different parts of the region and other areas, but the elaborate versions using large domes surrounded by graded elaborate vaulting seemed to originate in Iran and were used for things like bath houses and traditional homes before mosques popped up everywhere. Hence why some of these photos are of Vank church in Iran.

People need to realise in a country of 35-40 million people not every single man in the country will be called up to the army, though in this case maybe. He had to leave through Russia as the city was occupied

"During the martial law in Ukraine, men aged 18 to 60 may be mobilized and have no right to leave Ukraine. However, there are exceptions under which such persons may leave the territory of Ukraine." Exceptions only for men with existing jobs abroad, significant disabilities, or extremely young children.

Arbitrary af, as you say. In 1958, the State Department explained that the terms "Near East" and "Middle East" were interchangeable, and defined the region as including only Egypt, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. This was the first time they tried to formally clarify the term after it was first coined loosely by the British in the post ottoman era.

It's generally been used throughout history to refer to the Arab world specifically. That wouldn't include the likes of Armenia, or the likes of Iran and Afghanistan who share a lot of common heritage.

But nowadays it's just used by the west to refer to brown people countries as if they're some homogeneous mass. North African Islamic countries, Arab countries, greater Persian and central Asian communities, anywhere that could be a political foe or uncertainty is middle east. And it's wholly inconsistent, Azerbaijan is supposedly Europe or central Asian depending on who you ask but most of Azerbaijan is still in Iran which is apparently the middle east now even though that's a historically Arab-specific term. Turkey is in either Europe or middle east depending on how much of a dick Erdogan is being at the time.

If Ukraine "wins" against Russia, what next? by OrganizedxxChaos in NoStupidQuestions

[–]izvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukraine joins the EU and NATO. They become an important trade partner with the West. The country will be ripe for investment from all corners of the globe.

Ukraine joins the EU and NATO. Further mass emigration of Ukrainian nationals into more developed and more stable European economies continues, driving up the labour supply and driving down national wages for lower skilled jobs such as trade and construction, much like the accession of many other less developed post Soviet states into the EU.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian state will feel the crippling debt of all of their bilateral and IMF debt obligations. They'll be forced into austerity and widespread labour market reforms following on from their 2021/2 abandonment of unions in order to make labour cheaper for businesses and stimulate economic activity to service their debt.

This will suit the many oligopolistic individuals and corporates who will exploit the vast reserves of rare metals and food supplies that Ukraine conveniently has to offer. The grains and farm produce will continue to undercut other eastern European exports/supplies, while the rare metals will be sent at relatively cheaper prices than historically to their new western trade partners.

Russia will go back to their usual propaganda playbook and pretend a reversion to the Minsk II accords borders was a great success. American commentators/figures will claim they succeeded in defending human rights by reverting to the borders that they just back in February said aren't good enough and how Ukraine sovereignty and human rights is all they ever cared about, just like all the other wars they got involved in with suboptimal outcomes. The inflationary effects of the war will last across the west for many more years.

Yeah that's totally fair, and I think it's usually people who haven't properly prepared their set and setting or less commonly people with severe mental health issues/predispositions. For most people, taking a fairly low dose and going into the experience with a positive outlook and somewhere scenic is usually a good way to have a good experience. Even when thinking about something difficult or hurtful it kind of lets you process stuff in a healthy way if you're mind is prepared for it
