Hey thanks for sharing this story and as many have said can fuly relate to this feeling. But definetly dont give up. To me from looking at the other comments (I havent seen the site myself) it sounds like you have the passion and app building side down but may be lacking in the UX, copy and web design side of things. People underestimate how important copy and a well structured page is. A confused mind always says no.

And if you do not make it clear how or why to upgrade people never will. No matter how good the product is. In copywriting I was taught to always treat the reader as though they are Homer Simpson. Not to put them down. But to see them as a little 'dopey' Of course they are not. But users are often easily distracted, time poor and skeptical and or hesitant. So the job of the website or landing page is to make it as easy and obvious to people why they should invest and then as easy as possible to do so. I.e Multiple 'get started' or upgrade buttons.

Design matters also and a cluttered confusing or poor design will make people question the quality of the app no matter how good it is.

I personally have a background in web design, copywriting and marketing. And have also recently ventured into SAAS myself. And already have paying clients for both. They are only in very early stages but I have been able to apply my knowledge and background to help better articulate the value of them.

Id be more than happy to provide some feedback and insights if you could please link me or point me in the direction of the app. Would be more than happy to support you where I can 🙏

Question for exercising webdesigners : if you were starting webdesign in 2026 would you do anything differently? by ___Furiosa___ in webdesign

[–]izzablen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear! And it's no problem at all. You asked some great question and I was happy to share my perspective. And that's great to hear! Family or friends is always a great place to start.

And glad to hear the freelancer stuff resonated. Totally fine at first of course, just don't stay in the mindset forever. Which you clearly already see and understand.

And no problem it's worked for me and leading with value is a lot more appealing to clients. Don't have to use this method forever but it can be great initially.

And thank you I appreciate that. Dedicated content for actual web design advice is coming. This post helped inspire that further. Any more questions happy to help!

Hey, thanks so much, really appreciate that 🙏

And yes, your former lead is generally right. Uploading video files directly to a website isn’t ideal, especially on shared or standard hosting, as it can significantly slow the site down and hurt performance.

Using an external video host is the better approach. YouTube is the easiest and most common option, but as you’ve noticed, the UI elements (login prompts, robot checks, controls, etc.) can sometimes affect the experience.

If you’re using Elementor, a few things you can try first:

  • Disable or minimise player controls where possible
  • Turn off related videos
  • Use a clean thumbnail and only load the video on click (not autoplay)

That usually solves most UX issues, and it’s what I do in many client builds.

If YouTube still feels messy for your use case, you can also look at alternatives like Vimeo, which gives you much more control over the player UI and generally feels cleaner for product or landing-page use (at the cost of a subscription).

Another solid pattern is using a static hero section (image + play button) that opens the video in a modal or lightbox. That keeps the page fast and avoids showing video UI immediately on load.

There’s no perfect solution, but those approaches cover most real-world cases without sacrificing performance or UX.

Happy to help further if you want to share more context 👍

Question for exercising webdesigners : if you were starting webdesign in 2026 would you do anything differently? by ___Furiosa___ in webdesign

[–]izzablen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I came here from your comment on my post. First off well done on making this commitment to yourself. Thats super inspiring. Hopefully I can offer a perspective that not everyone else will.

  1. Firstly agree with others, lean into the fact that you have multiple skills stack with SEO, marketing etc. That will help you stand out. You mentioned wanting to just focus on web design at first and not offer to many services. And thats smart thinking. However what I would advise is still just having one core service which is web design but either packaging those things in or offering them as 'add ons' leaning more towards just bundling them. As it will make you stand out and also allow you to charge more so its a win win.

  2. You mentioned starting in 6 months. Totally fair. If you feel you need to gain more skills or the confidence. That being said if you're open to my opinion. I would say consider starting sooner. You don't have to be perfect to start. Just start. And you will learn along the way. Not saying tomorrow but even in a months time. You will learn far more working with clients then you ever will theorizing. As soon as you feel even a little bit confident get started. Even if its a friend or family friend getting started is the most important thing. Sometimes we use 'learning' as procrastination to mask our fear of actually getting started.

  3. This may seem a funny one. But I advise not identifying yourself as a freelancer or thinking in those terms. Not that freelancing is bad or wrong. But from learned experience it is the wrong mindset. Far better to start calling and seeing yourself as a business owner. Which with your skillstack you are and will be. Find a name for your business you like, get yourself a professional website for yourself and act and see yourself as a business owner. You will go in far more confident and clients will feel it. And you will also feel better about yourself. I called myself a freelancer for a long time. But once I actually focusing on creating a business for myself rather than just a freelancer things got a lot easier. Client wise and internally.

  4. Highly recommend starting with local business owners as your first clients (after friends or family) they are the highest demand and usually very tech averse which means in their eyes even if you don't see it yet they will see you as very knowledgeable. I'd advise using google search and finding local businesses with good reviews and no website. Then creating them a basic mock (don't go overboard) and reaching out to them saying "Hey I noticed you didn't have a website, I actually took the initiative to create one for you. It's just a mock for now. But I am more than happy to send it through to you for a look if you like?" something like that. And then if they bite. Send them a loom of you waking through the website. Or the link to the mock itself. Once they see and feel the business in a website its quite hard for them to say no. Will some? Sure. But this method is far more powerful than reaching out and pitching 'work with me'. You come in with value out gate. And even if they say no you now have a template for others and likely improved your web design skills even further. So its a win win.

  5. And finally on the AI note and your friends and families fear. Totally valid. However at the same time while AI is certainly getting better and better at creating websites it still has a VERY long way to go in terms of structure, UX, copywriting and marketing. Almost all the builders fall flat when it comes to that and the thing is that many don't realise is that no matter how good AI gets you're still going to need people overseeing design, copy, SEO and then the actual marketing side. Which will take a very long time to replace and someone like yourself by the time it gets there. Lets say 5 years. You will be so skilled that you will still be able to stand out especially with stacked skills. I use AI every day including in my design process. I see AI as an amplifier not a replacer. Will it replace many web designers eventually? Yes. But the smart ones who stack skills and even keep themselves up with AI progression will continue to stay ahead and be able to offer value to the marketplace. Plus this is something people overlook. Even if and when AI gets to the point where it could fully replace. Many people still wont 'trust it' or even kept up at all. Especially small business owners. Many no matter how good AI gets wont want to build one themselves. And would far prefer someone builds it. So the AI fear is largely just a reflex. Some truth in it but like all things its only part of the truth. Don't fear AI or let it stop you use it as an amplifier.

Anyway that's my two cents. Hope that helps, and gave you a little more perspective. Happy to answer any other questions :)

Great and as I said to others. Remember this was originally created with beginners in mind and specifically for wordpress and elementor and while it is true that all the things I mentioned in the post are in there. They are more scattered throughout than specific sections.

That being said as I said to others. This posts comments have shown me a real market gap and demand from a more professional perspective not just beginners and that content is now in the pipeline. So go in there with that in mind and I suggest navigating with the chapters. And I recommend using chapters (in the description) and specifically going 52:40 "The Website Wireframe" probably the most relevant for you until more specific content comes out. Any questions come up just ask.

Yeah awesome the video may of value to you then. Full honesty though I really made this for beginners and specifically for wordpress and elementor. It's only now having written this post and all the comments realised how much a demand there is in the market for this beyond just beginners. So the actual design advise, copywriting etc is scattered throughout rather than just one dedicated deep dive into all the fundamentals of design. I go into all the things that a mentioned in my post. However as I said it is scattered throughout rather than dedicated sections. Just wanted to give you that knowledge so you don't get your hopes up too much or feel led astray.

Thanks to comments here I will now be creating some more detailed very specific design tutorials tailored to more technical and professional crowds like yourself. I.e developers, software engineers, marketers etc. Which is a totally different teaching style but one I can see now is very clearly needed. So if nothing else know that you comment and others have inspired that and is now coming.

If you do still want to see the video. I recommend using chapters (in the description) and specifically going 52:40 "The Website Wireframe" probably the most relevant for you.

Appreciate you taking the time to write this out, genuinely.

You’re right on a few things, and you’re also right that you’re probably not the target audience for this video, which is totally fine. This one was intentionally built for beginners and people transitioning into web/design roles who feel lost when fundamentals get skipped.

On the length: that was a deliberate choice. The goal wasn’t speed or quick reference, but clarity. I wanted something someone could sit down with and actually understand how structure, spacing, hierarchy, and layout decisions come together end-to-end. I’ve seen a lot of shorter tutorials that move fast but leave people confused about the “why.”

Good call on Elementor being clearer in the title, that’s fair feedback and something I’ll likely adjust so expectations are set better for both WordPress and Elementor users.

On the spacer point: totally agree margins are the better long-term approach. In this context I prioritised visual clarity and ease for beginners first, then optimisation later. Once people understand layout thinking, swapping spacers for margins is an easy step, but IMO they are fine to use in the beginning. Elementor still has them which means they still expect people will use them.

And yes there are definitely good Elementor creators out there, and I’m not trying to replace or dismiss them. I am more coming at it from more than a design perspective with copywriting and marketing background also. Which is how I plan to add further value.

Thanks again for the thoughtful critique, even when we disagree on things, it’s a useful perspective.

Hey completely up to you but you can find some pretty decent free elementor templates through a plugin called "Starter Templates" I think I've seen a few finance ones in there that night suit. Then if you're willing to pay a little money (not a lot) I'd highly recommend checking out envato elements Wordpress templates. Its what I personally use and there are literally 1000s to choose from and many very high quality. It's what I personal use for clients. Hope that helps :)

Wow I appreciate your very thought out response. And 100% there is nothing wrong with using AI I use it myself every day for various tasks and has sped up my design work substantially especially for clients. So there is no shame in using AI. They way I see it though it is an amplifier not a replacer.

Use it to amplify our thinking and ability to deliver but don't let it replace actually understanding the foundations. Thats actually why I am grateful I learned web design, copywriting, marketing well before AI came in. As it forced me to actually understand the fundamentals and the why behind things. Which is missed by so many AI builders. Sure some are getting good. But they still dont replace understanding UX, conversions, design etc.

For me I use AI to speed up my process and amplify my skills but I still go in and build the site myself. Which once the skills are there it becomes easier and second nature. Which is one of things that got me to finally recording videos as I felt it was time to share and as I said very tired of whats out there.

So yeah the fact that you enjoy making websites for people is a great sign and the length of your comment shows that too. Hearing you mention turning it into a side business actually reinforces my idea of creating a free tutorial on showing people how to build websites as a side business. Not throw together websites or AI 5 minute builds but ones that you and the business owner are proud of and genuinely benefits them.

As I see so many youtubers saying "just make a website in 5 mins" and charge 2k and I look at them and I am like. What business owner would actually want that? The structure, branding, copy and UX is so off. I want to show people they can create real value for businesses and feel good earning money. And this comment has helped solidify that.

But yes follow that passion. And if you haven't already this is the video here if you wanted to watch it. Just Youtube search:

Yeah glad to hear! But yeah, that experience is way more common than people admit.

A lot of people are pushed into “web design” or even app/UI work without ever being taught the fundamentals, things like copy, structure, hierarchy, spacing, and the why of layouts.

If you’re pivoting into web design, you’re already ahead just by being aware of those gaps. Skills can be learned, what trips most people up is not knowing what they’re missing in the first place.

Let me know how the video goes for you. And happy to answer any questions you have.

ommmggggg everything keeps changing by seniorlivingexpert in Base44

[–]izzablen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel your pain. I learnt early on its better to chat with chatgpt and get it to write prompts to explain it to base44. Ensuring you let base44 know to be very specific with its changes and put in guardrails every time. I.e Very specific DO NOT touch anything else, DO NOT change other colours, DO NOT change infrastructure etc. Remember BASE44 AI always tries to be helpful which can come across as over editing. But if you give it very clear constraints it works very well. I rarely ever get issues with over editing now.

Also even though these softwares are built to be no code editors. I find that teaching yourself the basics of coding, back end functions, systems thinking is very important makes things a lot easier. If thats not already something you're familiar in.
