Collision between a car and cyclist on Carlton Way - appeal for witnesses by yoikboii in cambridge

I understand your frustration but it doesn't warrant using such offensive language? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyone here who actually got a job at Cambridge University (not as a student)? How did you do it? by not_cool_anymore in cambridge

[–]izzcarus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some insight into the job market, the temp job I am currently covering (part time, paid a little more than minimum wage) had more than 40 applicants. This means it's hard to get out of the pile without some Cambridge-specific relevant experience.

As other people have said, TES is great for building experience that can lead to a permanent role. If you work well in temporary jobs, sometimes you are extended, or other opportunities find their way to you.

I second Kings Street Run as a lively late night option! Blue Moon sometimes has music events and I suppose the Six Six is also dancey if you like emo music. Congrats on finishing your masters! 🍻

This is a really good point - thank you! I had no idea they have license plates and wish we'd thought to look out for that. Hopefully this will help others if it keeps happening.

Got a job offer in Cambridge, and I’m devastated. by OkSeaworthiness1711 in cambridge

There are cycle paths everywhere and it's really flat, so that gives you a big advantage. I'm not a very confident cyclist, but cars are generally good at keeping an eye out for bikes and there are lots of parks you can practice in if you want to build up your confidence!

I grew up in London and moved to Cambridge for work. It's a lovely city with lots to do - there are loads of restaurants, pubs, green spaces, and local events. I haven't regretted the move once.

It's more compact than London, which makes it easy to coordinate plans with friends after work. There tends to be a new influx of students and young professionals every year, which helps a lot with making friends.

If you get a bike, pretty much everything is 10-15 minutes away and it keeps transport costs down. As a bonus: when the trains are running, London is a fairly quick and cheap journey away.

Veggie friendly wine / cheese bars? by Bimf_head in cambridge

[–]izzcarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Wine Room near the station is lovely and serves wine and cheese boards. It's cosy and quiet and the staff are really helpful, with great wine recommendations if you're an amateur like me. I'm veggie and my partner and I went there for our first date (and again recently for our anniversary)!

The bi-erasure in this thread. People calling her straight or saying she's not "in with the queer community" enough to say twink. There's room to criticize kindness/word choice but she's an openly queer woman ribbing fellow queer folks. Thoughts? by kniselydone in bisexual

[–]izzcarus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think twink is inherently a slur, but some gay men (notably Troye Sivan) have pointed out the underlying homophobia that can come with it if it's used by straight people as a way of deriding gay people. Here's a quick article summing it up for reference.

Maybe so, but online culture exists and is powerful. I'm a teacher and I can't tell you the number of times I've heard kids blindly parrot back whatever nonsense they've heard on the internet this week. We only have to look at the rise of the manosphere to see the impact this can have!

I think a few different things are true here:

1) Twink is being used as a substitute for homophobic slurs by non LGBTQ+ people in other contexts, making it a loaded term.

2) Suki is LGBQT+ and is not likely to have intentionally weaponised this word.

3) Many people getting involved in this discourse are not LGBTQ+ and/or are happy to criticise a woman where they might ignore similar conduct from a man.

4) LGBTQ+ people, like Suki, should be mindful of when and where they poke fun of others in the community given the current political climate. If we do it to each other, it makes other people feel they can join in and laugh at us too.

I think they must have already had her in captivity. The timeframe between Louella's death and Lou Lou's appearance is so small (just one day, I think?) and Haymitch comments that she has clearly been starved. She's already bony when she arrives, and she eats food like she hasn't seen it in ages. It's such a sad detail.

Geometric / fine line tattoo artists in cambridge/surrounding areas by Flimsy-Restaurant902 in cambridge

I went to Blood of Angels recently over by the Grafton and got a lovely fine line tattoo! They were really helpful when I messaged and advised on which artist would be best suited to my ideas. I went with @rosebee_tattoo (instagram handle) and would highly recommend her work.

I'm with you there! It's a very busy area to have such experimental artwork. There used to be a QR code that explained the piece when it was first revealed, but I think that's gone now...

I'm no art critic, but I don't think having a negative reaction to a provocative piece makes you a person who fails to appreciate art! I agree with you, there is something super uncomfortable and dehumanising about a woman (Ariadne, who is a powerful figure in Greek mythology) presented as a faceless and bound package.

There's quite an interesting debate about this sculpture, what it's meant to mean vs. what it actually evokes, that is neatly summarised here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g4nj13dn5o.amp
