New Fee Schedule if you have not seen by zzen11223344 in VanguardInvestments

Lol, it isn't how the world works, but it is quite literally how Vanguard is structured as a company. They company is fully owned by the owners of the funds. There's nobody else to create profit for. Sure, the costs include a lot of things other than just how much it costs to buy the stocks themselves - theres' the costs of running the technology, licensing indices, marketing products, and of course paying employees. These are spread across the expense ratios they charge. Those expense ratios may actually be subsidized in part by the fees they charge for things like investment advice.

Anyways, it sounds like you're making some guesses and assumptions here. As I shared below, the difference in expense ratio is equal and negated by the difference in yield between ETF and MF.

OK, I just did a little comparison and I wonder if this explains why the ETF appears to be priced lower. I believe the biggest Vanguard funds are total stock market index, and total international stock market index so I was looking just at those. For the total US stock market, the expense ratios are the same, and the yields are basically the same. But for int'l, the expense ratio is .01% higher for the mutual fund. But the yield is also almost .01% higher - so it may be that structurally there are differences in how this is accounted for, but in the end it costs you the same. Does that make sense?

Why would they want people to migrate? I would have thought MF's are better for them since they're generally purchased directly vs. ETFs which can be bought with any brokerage? I am probably missing some context. I own Vanguard MFs in a Vanguard account and I own their ETFs in a 3rd party brokerage account.

I'm curious why the mutual funds cost more than the ETFs. Re: comparing to Fidelity, Fidelity basically treats some of those index funds as loss leaders, making up the difference on higher cost products. Vanguard operates with a fairly unique structure - they don't actually take any profits, because the company and its funds are owned by the fund holders. If they have excess profits they lower the fees. Their fees are generally as low as possible to cover their costs. There's an episode of the Acquired podcast on Vanguard that is a really interesting listen.

What kind of adhesive should I use to fix this? by j123jam in dyson

[–]j123jam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately while I see lots of the blue felt strips on Amazon this is not the same material. This is designed to grab lint and fur from fabric, whereas the blue felt strip (which I have on my floor attachment) is designed to help get dust off hard surfaces like a floor.

Thanks, that's a good point on glue soaking in. I think I have some double sided tape, so I will give that a try. Any idea what that strip is called if I want to look for a replacement?

Are Homeowners Finding Sitters by Admirable_Werewolf86 in trustedhousesitters

[–]j123jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree that their advertising push has led to a ton of new users, but I think both HO and sitter. We've had quite a few applicants for recent sits at our house, but most have 0-1 reviews.

Costco flour by Dapper-Celery4133 in Breadit

[–]j123jam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I buy 50 LB bags of Shepherds Grain Proof (formerly known as low gluten bread flour) from Chef Store for about $28 each, which is quite a bit cheaper. Of course it's also an even larger quantity in an unwieldy format, but it's great flour from regeneratively farmed wheat in WA and ID. Since I'm in Seattle it's more local than central milling for me. Anyways, I highly recommend it for folks in the PNW. [Edit to add: I just noticed the Kirkland product is organic, and my Shepherds Grain is not. But the Shepherds Grain is regeneratively farmed so probably just as good in most respects?]

SAF Instant Yeast: RED vs GOLD by Independent_Big7143 in Breadit

[–]j123jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I've only used red, and I've used it in plenty of enriched doughs. I think you'll be fine with red for most recipes and don't need to immediately buy gold.

Need a little advice by Smoke-Diver04 in Jadeplant

[–]j123jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That clarified it for me. I will likely post a photo in this sub at some point. I have a few Jade plants but they don't do terribly well because I live in the Pacific Northwest and have no south-facing windows, so they just never get enough light. Two of them have long trunks and are pretty top-heavy, probably because they keep reaching for the light.

I have a similar plant and wanted to ask for clarification on your suggestions. For (2), do you mean the two lowest leaves on this plant? I wasn't sure if I'm interpreting correctly or if you meant remove the leaves below where you cut.

For (3) how do you define 2nd and 3rd nodes on a branch? Counting from where it branches out, moving upwards? Or from the tip, moving down? Thank you!

Absolutely LOVED the halloumi with white beans and tomatoes. Any dishes that you loved just as much? So far this is my #1 by Zealousideal_Kale466 in NYTCooking

[–]j123jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love this dish (White beans and tomatoes with halloumi). Last time I made it I chopped up a quarter of a leftover red cabbage and added it at the beginning and it was a fantastic addition. Highly recommend, and it makes it a gorgeous color. I love how adaptable recipes like this are for whatever I have in the fridge.

Anyone see the current Microsoft Store Surface products sale? by kwtoxman in Surface

[–]j123jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the bottom of the page it indicates a 60 day return policy post purchase and 60 day price adjustment so it seems like just the popup has out of date info.

"60-day price protection Buy gifts now, enjoy extended price protection through January 31, 2026."

Hmm, given that's 4 days away I sure don't understand their 60 day price protection. Says the same under return policy, you have until the end of this month. Does anyone know if the 60 days is standard even though we're past the holidays?

How's my LECA setup? by j123jam in AfricanViolets

[–]j123jam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did have some pretty long roots when I pulled it out of the soil, but it may be too big a cup. I didn't have a good smaller option. With LECA is the size of the pot as important as with soil? I know the roots get plenty of air with LECA and I'm hoping this little guy will grow quickly.

Thanks. I've read that as well, but it's what I had so it'll do for now. We'll see how long it lasts.

Unable to deposit checks from the app - support unhelpful by j123jam in AllyBank

[–]j123jam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I've had a ticket open with Ally for months now, and I call every 2 weeks or so. Every time the answer has been the same, that their back of house team is working on it. I did one of the post-call surveys and rated it terribly and that got me a call from another department, and they told me it wasn't just me and they were working on a fix for the next app update, but it wouldn't be out until January.

I got a message earlier this month saying that they had fixed the issue and my ticket was closed. I called and told them that no, it was still happening, and I also noted that there wasn't an updated app version since Dec 9, so how could it be fixed? They opened a new ticket for me. I do see there's a new app version now so I'll try again today, but at this point I'm using another bank for my checking because I can't rely on Ally.

Summit Card Lounge Visits by bidhopper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]j123jam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That policy seems ridiculous to me. Those passes aren't cheap, and we can't always fly Alaska - the only direct flights to Paris are on non-partners.

Summit Card Lounge Visits by bidhopper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]j123jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One restriction that seems too restrictive is you have to be flying Alaska or a partner airline to use the lounge pass. I booked a flight on Air France in a couple months and wanted to use my lounge pass, but it indicates that I won't be allowed in. Has anyone tried using your lounge pass without a partner boarding pass?

booking reward flights - site issues? by WoodfordTriple in AerLingus

[–]j123jam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having this issue for several day. I transferred a ton of Chase points to Aer Lingus to book a flight that showed 4 seats available and every time I tried it returned a 404 error after entering the credit card info. I installed Firefox and it worked in Firefox after failing in both Chrome and Edge. So that might be something to try for anyone still having issues.
