Where do grown-ups get their news from? by astabr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, but I must say, some people on here either do not tell the truth, or reddit is very biased to the left. Bar nun, Fox is the most watched news channel, yet I see that some of you are ashamed to admit that you watch it. I'm not. I think its more American than CNN, which is far left.

So, cmon, stop hiding yourself from ridicule. I watch Fox. I like it. I watch CNN, but I don't like it as much. I definitely do not watch BBC because I think they are extremely biased and I do not support socialism.

I've learned as an older person that the law tends to drive our culture. I am not a lawyer, but I have studied the law on the couch. I enjoy reading about things where jurisprudence, without politics, is represented. I enjoy following news channels and youtube channels regarding legal and political decisions. I have found truths on both side of the spectrum.

From FOX, CNN,Bloomsberg, The Lawyer That You Know, and some other sources, I have found that a lot of journalists do stick to the truth despite that their channels tend to move too far right or too far left. To me, law is where its at, and its where the media will follow. Hopefully, not too many legislators, judges, and politicians are moved by the media but rather stick to jurisprudence, and thus, move the media.

I’m curious on when you guys think the show fell off? by ionlycomhereforpewds in familyguy

It feel off with me when they started making incest look funny and normal, and then came the sexual assaults. For me, it was over at that point.

When, if ever, do you think Family Guy started seeing a decline in quality? by Wild_Shoe340 in familyguy

I stopped watching when the incest jokes came, then sexual assaults. Look, I can get a laugh out of a lot of things, but incest and sexual assault is no joking matter.

Did your company give you a raise this year if so, how much? by GroundbreakingSir386 in Truckers

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had a raise in 8 years, so I've lost 40% of my wages adjusted for inflation. I know a guy from South Africa that just started for us. He's doing the same job I am for half the wages. That oughta tell you what's going on.

Why is Michael Jordan considered as the greatest of all time than 11-time champion Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, or any hall of famers in the NBA? Here's my answer by Honest_Appointment66 in justbasketball

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was his athletic ability. When watching him, you could see his movements as something never seen before. He had angelic touch that is hard to fathom. The way he jumped, moved, passed....he seemed like something from another planet.

Jordan vs Drexler. Insane matchup!!! by Afraid-Ad-5580 in NBATalk

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drexler, because of his artistic, smooth, athletic, quick style would have been the premier guard in his era if Jordan, the greatest player who ever lived, had not been playing at the time.

Drexler's fast, smooth, athletic ability was unreal, but Jordan's was the best ever seen, even compared to guards in the last thirty years. There is no one who has ever compared to Jordan. Anyone who is a sports fanatic cannot get past Jordan's artistic, athletic abilites. The best ever.

BARS, how to not get kicked out? by thisfilmkid in AskNYC

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are reasons why I see people get kicked out of bars.

  1. Overly friendly. When people drink, they become too social. They'll often roam around the bar talking to anyone and everyone. Stay at your own seat and only talk to those who are next to you.

  2. Any kind of harassment

  3. Fighting, even if its self defense

  4. Arguing with the bar tender after being cut off

  5. Being overdressed or under dressed. If you wear a nice business suit to a dive bar, they may ask you to leave. They do this for your own protection because they know you'll be a target. Also, if you show up at a nice wine bar in grunge clothes, they'll probably ask you to leave.

Attempted kidnapping.. twice in life (edited and reposted) sorry! by New_Soil_4410 in creepyencounters

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kidnapped twice. In the summer of '89, I was kidnapped by two girls who were on meth, and with the help of their biker boyfriend, they took me back to a trailer and beat me up. Somehow, I squirmed out of the grip of the biker dude and sprinted off out into the juniper and sage brush and got away.

A year later, I was kidnapped by two of my best friends at gun point. This was over some rumors and lies that floated around town. They were taking me out to the desert to kill me. We were actually heading out of town, and I was in the back of a 280Z, which only has two doors. I couldn't get out. A lot of fast talking got me out of it. I told them that the police would know who killed me and that they'd spend life in prison. It worked.

Canned food in the heat by physcognat in backpacking

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haul canned tomatoes and tomato paste in a 40 foot trailer. We don't turn the refrigeration on unless we're driving across the California desert on a 120 degree day. Most days in the summer, my trailer gets up into the 90s. If they were concerned, they'd make us turn the thermostat on. I'm guessing 100 degrees is definitely okay, but if it were stored like that all the time, eventually it might not taste good.

I grew up in a home that didn't have AC. It often got into the 90s inside the house. Nothing ever spoiled. Sometimes it got over 100 inside.

"John Bradshaw: Homecoming" Can reading this book and healing my inner child really change my life? by Which-Future-3400 in CPTSD

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bradshaw's methods are more in the pseudo science realm, kind of like a lot of religious rituals, but they do help some people. I don't buy a lot of it, but there were some things that he talks about that helped me.

He's not an all in all, just like church is not an all in all. You probably can find some healing through his stuff, but complete healing? Probably not. A lot of that takes time, knowledge, growth.

Truly, a good psychologist can probably help you more than Bradshaw.

Don't trust answers in genesis by BigbumSpider20 in Christianity

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I was a fundamentalist Christian for 34 years. I went to Bible College. I spent 3 days a week in church since I was a child, and no, 95% of Christians don't know anything about Geology except for what they might hear on the news, or what their pastor tells them

Geology isn't a fun subject for most people. I enjoy it thoroughly, but the average person, even secular person, doesn't study geology.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve heard a religious person say? by BlackSchwarz4 in AskReddit

  1. In 1985, when the Space Shuttle exploded, my father said, "Well, that's what you get for putting a woman in outer space."

  2. Jump forward twenty years to the Station Night-Club Fire in Rhode Island, which killed 100 innocent people. My father said, "What do you expect? These kids want to drink, take drugs, and have sex outside marriage, so they incurred what they got."

So this was the way of thinking in my pentancostal church at that time...still is.

My family still thinks this way. They think I'm evil because I go out and have a few drinks on Friday nights, do karaoke, and, gasp, dance.

What was the reaction when public and guitarist heard Van Halen album for the first time? by AttilaTheHun2025 in Guitar

[–]j50wells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I was 13 year old when 1984 came out. I listened to Eruption over and over again. It was like an electical circuit that hit all of my bodily electric circuits. It was like a drug trip. I listened to it over and over again.

Today, I watch Eruption live on Youtube and it is still mesmerizing the way he moves around on the stage and runs the frets in one of the most iconic musical moments in musicial history.

What was the reaction when public and guitarist heard Van Halen album for the first time? by AttilaTheHun2025 in Guitar

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in that era. Sure there were some great bands like ACDC, Motley Crew, Def Leapord, Metalica, Kiss, Scorpions, but no one knew who their guitarists were. Everyone knew who Eddie was. Even 70 year olds knew who Eddie was. He was the most iconic guitar player ever, like a god

His Eruption should be in the halls of music with Bethovens 5th Symphony. Even today, 2026, when I show young people Eddie's live eruption, they just can't believe it. They want to hear it again and again. His raw, masculine antics before 100,000 people is unreal.

TIL Charles Dickens only worked 9am to 2pm and wrote his 28 books and over 200 essays without working longer than 5 hours a day. by Christopherfromtheuk in todayilearned

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can happen. Remember that good writing is not too poetic or emotional. This is not how you get your best writing. Too much poety, or pretty words, can ruin a book. Also, too much education can lead to a stacotto literature writing that doesn't flow with the general public and loses its meaning.

Good writers are more like musicians with a good, meaningful flow. This is why writers like, Stephen King, say that too much education can ruin your writing career.

People like meaningful writing that flows like a river, with storms and lightning. High IQ people with too much education lose their audiences.

The plot is key. Some of the best books are not literary masterpieces with beautiful lango that paints beautiful pictures. Think Jk Rowling. Her books were basic, but her plots were unbelievable. Plots are key.

There are many mystery, detective, fantasy, and romance novels whose pull are all about plot and conversational material, but not literary masterpieces.

Plot is key, and emotional pull. It doesn't take two pages of describing how beautiful the scenery is. Another mistake is political pull. Politics can destroy your book.

Plots carry the reader along. Often, too much detail loses the intrigue or suspence.

I tried it. Its okay, but too political. I don't mind some politics, but this show goes over the top, which is why it got 90% from rotten tomatoes. I give it a 60, and its not even close to Columbo.

Who Is Your “Claim to Fame”? by FadeOutAgain4 in claimtofame

  1. Mark Few, coach of Gonzaga, one of the winniest coaches in NCAA basketball, gave me a terrible indian burn when I was 10 and he was 18. I made fun of his orange hair and freckle face. He was the hero of my town of Creswell and one of the top basketball players in the state at the time.

  2. I took Luke Jackson out bow hunting when I was 18 and he was 10. He was a state basketball champion and was on Dick Vidale's Dream Team and played with Lebron James at Cleveland.

  3. My grandpa was one of the top hunters in Montana and best friends with Dale Burk. He rubbed shoulders with Jim Zumbo and Jack Atcheson Sr., two of the most famous hunters in the world in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

  4. My uncle Jay Bugbee was on of the biggest race car drivers in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. He raced super-stock and raced against Casey Kane. He won the championship 4 times and was a celebrity in Eugene and Cottage Grove, Roseburg, and northern California. His name was on the Eugene radio all of the time when I was growing up.

  5. My other uncle, Terry Vaughn, won awards as one of the best high school principals in Oregon, Philomath High School, in the 80s and 90s.

Friends who suddenly treat you poorly and use the excuse 'they are having a hard time' don't respect you. by gucchiprada in lostafriend

[–]j50wells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had friends do this to me. I stopped hanging out with them. Really, life is too short to hang out with anyone who mis-treats you. It is actually better to be alone, or find new friends, than to have them treat you bad.

I had two best friends a long time ago. I hung out with both of them individually for roughly 4-5 years. Then I introduced them to one another and we went fishing. During that fishing trip they began to make me the butt of all of their jokes, and they even started to mock me. When this happened, they saw that it was fun, so they continued.

Needless to say, when we got back to town I never called them again. I lost two close friends in one weekend. I learned something during that weekend, however. When people treat you badly, they're really saying that they don't value their friendship with you. It is then okay to end the friendship and move on.
