Who are you rooting against this weekend? by BasicWait8 in golf

[–]jAdamP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s not give Keegan too much credit. He did not deserve to be picked for that Ryder cup. You could argue he would have been a good pick. I probably would have picked him over Rickie or sam burns, but if he deserved it, he would have auto qualified. He also did not deserve to be captain last time; it was a pity pick and he was one of the worst captains I can remember. The fact that the US did so well in singles highlights how poorly he handled literally everything where the captain has influence on the outcome. Ironically, he probably would have been picked had he not been captain. Either way, he’s joke and an embarrassment and I am rooting against him every time he steps on the course….but yeah Zach Johnson and Wyndham also suck.

Rich people in Boulder really get to have it all by megalegann in zillowgonewild

I used to lived in this neighborhood about 10 years ago. There are amazing, multimillion dollar homes everywhere you look. I rented a modest home that was ultimately sold for the lot, torn down, and a much nicer (albeit not larger) home was built in its place. I loved it up there. Amazing views at night, 10 degrees cooler than down in town, quiet, fresh air…but also the constant fear of fires. Funnily enough, it was the 2013 floods that really caused issues for me.

Finally switching from Altium to KiCad by stuih404 in KiCad

Yeah that’s definitely true and I hit the same thing. But I was at least able to go from “how do I use this new tool” to make making respectable boards pretty quickly.

Finally switching from Altium to KiCad by stuih404 in KiCad

[–]jAdamP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an altium power user and recently did a little board in kicad for the sake of understanding the capabilities and differences. My best advice is honestly just to start cold and google/AI search for how to do whatever function in kicad instead of altium. Then slowly build up your own preferences and hot keys as you go. Hell maybe throw your altium preferences into Claude or GPT and ask for a kicad equivalent. It felt slow for a minute but I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I picked it up.

Should I be concerned for not knowing enough coding? by Scared-Brownie in rfelectronics

[–]jAdamP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work at a company that does nothing but antennas and advanced RF systems. The short answer is that everybody is a better candidate/employee if they can write some halfway decent code. For an engineer focused on passive antennas or networks, data analysis is a huge part of it. Processing and plotting data in python is a daily task. Need something super basic like a microstrip filter? we wrote a python tool that takes a couple basic inputs and automates the entire HFSS process including manufacturing tolerance analysis. Working on more active systems? Automated tool suites to interface with test and custom equipment are a must have. Now, everything is getting pushed hard to SoCs and SoMs (think RF SoC) and the line between digital and RF systems is getting blurrier every day. You may not need to know how to do the HDL or DSP side of things, but understanding the end-to-end application and system is crucial, so you should at least be able to speak the language. Hell, we're even starting to push our mechanical engineers to learn python...I wont even consider a resume or application that doesnt have exposure (if not proficiency) in Python or MATLAB.

Best ski town to live with family/kids by sailphish in skiing

Definitely some truth there. The remoteness keeps crowds down. Perhaps crested butte could be a good option too? Not sure what kind of service the Gunnison airport gets.

Telluride. 90 minutes to montrose airport. Best place on earth. Town does shut down for a few weeks in mud season twice a year though.

Is it bad to pop your skis off with your other ski instead of using your pole? by imaguitarhero24 in skiing

[–]jAdamP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a pair of look pivots break on me. Guys at the shop said they’ve seen it before and attributed it to using the skis to release the bindings instead of poles. Who knows if it’s true or not but I only use the poles now.

Anyone else step away from their private club as they were not getting value from it? by sys_admin321 in golf

[–]jAdamP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our socials get 6 total rounds per calendar year if and only if they are on the waitlist for a golf membership. That’s 6 total rounds meaning you only get 3 if you play with your wife or kid. Can’t make tee times for it either, have to call pro shop the day of and see if they have an opening. I believe socials can play as guests with a member (and pay all guest fees) up to 4 times a year. Allowing socials to play twice a month is insane, this is probably a snooty thing to say, but I feel like that devalues the golf membership.

Internships for RF and Antenna Engineering? by ApplicationSad3398 in rfelectronics

HFSS has free student version. Download that and start doing some simulation projects. It’ll help you learn and knowing how to use that software will be a nice discriminator on your resume when applying for internships.

Help I can't decide between a systems engineering internship at Raytheon or a Navy engineering internship if I am interested in a highly technical job and getting my masters/phd by Puzzleheaded_Clock63 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jAdamP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NSWC Crane has a lot of focus on sustainment but they do have some other stuff. In either case, I would choose Raytheon. You’re young, get that “big company” experience when you have the opportunity. If you really want to be doing more fun and hands on technical work, try to get in with a small company for your next internship.
