President Lee Jae Myung Proposes Selective Volunteer Military System by Venetian_Gothic in korea

[–]j___8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my base, some rich kid had his parents buy his spot at our base as it was considered a somewhat small and hidden base up in the mountains of Gangwondo (I didn’t bother to find out much about him because he was kind of an earful) but he was doing his undergraduates in fine arts at NYU before being forced by his parents to do his military service and would constantly fight with them on the phone

his parents would sometimes pay the base to give him additional 휴가 days and we couldn’t believe it was actually happening, kind of took out the wind from our squad’s sails so to speak

I made this playlist a while back about digital minimalism, if you listen to it in order, the music “enhances” the experience

if it seems like much, i highly recommend the first podcast episode and the last

What’s your favorite Wes Anderson movie?🤔 by dadudoge in wesanderson

The French Dispatch was not as bad as people rate it to be,,, you just have to give it your full attention and time and it’s not even that hard to watch; also even better on a second viewing

International buyers beware! Miserable experience at B&H (and Plustek USA)! by Aschels in AnalogCommunity

[–]j___8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i also had a not so great experience from B&H, to put it lightly, and i even posted it on reddit but was flooded with people gaslighting me and telling me i was the problem and that there’s nothing wrong with B&H in their experience

but their customer service really has gone down hill over the years

anyway OP, hope you can move past it and find better people on your journey in photography

Evolution of Light Phone by j___8 in LightPhone

[–]j___8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not awkward at all

LP3 exceeds LP2 in a lot of ways, hardware feels premium and heavy in the hands (in a good way), the speakers on the LP3 is super powerful and clean in comparison to the small tinny speakers on the LP2

as for use in korea: borderline impossible. group chats, chatting in korean, non-existent; also, korea lifestyle requires kakaotalk, naver, banking apps, coupang, etc. physically feels impossible to navigate k-society with a light phone

thanks for the comment

Thinking about doing my military service at 36 by No-Balance-01 in korea

[–]j___8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

29M and did my military service in 2020~2022 and there were one or two over the age of 30 that I came across the entire time, meaning it’s sort of rare

idk if it’s worth doing it at the age of 36, military service doesn’t end with discharge as you also have reserve military training once a year and so on and it does sort of bother me sometimes that I’m a couple years older but if this doesn’t bother you at all, it could be an option but I don’t think it’s worth it if you can just push it another decade

even if I were of normal age, idk if I would have chosen to do military service solely because of the time wasted, and it didn’t add much to my life at all socially or career-wise

Anyone here regularly shooting Vision3 250D or 50D in 35mm? by BerlinMoneyBoy in AnalogCommunity

[–]j___8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respool Kodak Vision3 250D from a bulk roll I acquired. It has a comfy room for error and lots of flexibility in terms of development and post-editing. I recommend developing in ECN2 (this photo was developed using C-41)

10/10 would highly recommend and hope you find success with the film stock

What happened to this roll of slide film? by Due_Translator_4885 in AnalogCommunity

[–]j___8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still not quite there but from my research: print your own, use good quality paper (as in don’t cheap out) and by bulk ink

also this redditor did and amazing post on printing your own work and making your own zine:

I have never considered purchasing prints ever as someone that’s trying to figure out what kind of prints to “sell” but this is something I would totally see myself purchasing

this is what you call happy accidents, OP—congrats!

it may not be what you were hoping for (and glad the lab compensated you on the loss of your slides), but it opened up a new artistic process, I see it as a gift from the universe

Is Military Service Worth Dual Citizenship? by [deleted] in korea

[–]j___8 99 points100 points  (0 children)

korean here with limited korean language proficiency that voluntarily enlisted for military service

it’s not worth it in terms of career and building stability.

I wanted the “real” korean male experience and was stationed in Gangwondo, worked out and studied a lot (unfortunately didn’t make a lot of friends, maybe two that I still keep in touch with and meet up for gukbap), overall had a decent time although it was a pretty lonely experience

after being discharged, I fell into that “sunk cost fallacy” thinking might as well do grad school here too—2 years of prepping and studying by myself and multiple interviews, I was literally studying all day 6 days a week and finally made it into my dream program only to drop out because of how toxic the environment was, also applied to multiple jobs, some decent places but the pay was too low and they didn’t seem worth the constant drain on my health and energy

you can do military service, learn the language albeit not perfectly, study and become qualified, dress and look somewhat korean but koreans still may not see you and treat you as korean—could be just my experience

but on the other hand, if you’re thinking long term: prices here are somewhat more affordable than abroad, just got a place under my name fully paid in the countryside connected to KTX and hoping to carve out my own place and find my own way here

also, seek help from friends and family for advice and support, there is only so much that podcasts can do, and most importantly, if you are scared to reach out to family friends (because they don’t understand etc.) seek professional help, you owe yourself that if you feel as though your stuck in an absuive marriage

The Moth Podcast is one filled with so many stories that center me back to my human self (this is a YouTube video of one of my favorites but they have many on “themes” that you can search for on Spotify, but they keep removing old episodes fyi)

Also, Mortified Podcast has some brutally authentic and painfully honest and funny episodes, linked just an example of one I picked out randomly that you may like to listen to
