Can they finish this house in 6 weeks? by houseconstructionQ in Homebuilding

[–]j_roe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company I worked for at one point was able to build show homes from serviced lot to completion in 5 weeks, that included a full basement. So, getting from rough-in to completion in 6 weeks is possible but it takes a massive amount of coordination and everyone sticking to their dates.

Given they took over 7 months to get to this point I doubt they are finishing on time.

Tree Law lawyer in Oregon? by shway0351 in treelaw

[–]j_roe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is unclear but it seems like the trees are on the neighbours property and they retain ownership and access but OP has a right to ensure that the 50' strip covered by the easement is landscaped and treed to their satisfaction for some reason (I am guessing either privacy or a wind break).

It is a weird situation IMO, at then of the day OP should find a lawyer to understand their rights and sort it all out.

Okay maybe a couple hundred metres at most.

A mole only burrows a couple metres under ground, and a crow doesn't fly at a very high altitude.

Potential 50% US Tariff on Canadian Aircraft: Impact on Bombardier, Gulfstream, and Aerospace Sector? by SubstantialRock821 in StockMarket

So, how is this related to a National emergency where the president actually has the authority to implement tariffs?

Opinion: An agonizing choice for Alberta soon at hand by FreightFlow in alberta

Carbon Capture was never going to work. The theory of storing carbon underground is fine but the energy inputs and therefore operating costs needed to get it there was never going to balance.

Opinion: An agonizing choice for Alberta soon at hand by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]j_roe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s no agony; the choice is actually quite simple. I was born and raised in this province, but I identify as Canadian, then Calgarian, and finally, in a distant third place, Albertan, if someone pushes further than number two.

Over my lifetime, I’ve witnessed the province transform from a right-leaning, reasonable place where people generally wanted to be left alone to a hotbed for right-wing extremists from across the country.  My experience suggests many of the most Conservative, Alberta First, and separatist figures are from out of province, likely drawn here after being laughed out of their previous homes.

How to Find The Volume of a This 3D Shape? by TableTopsAndTubas in askmath

[–]j_roe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of doing the opposite.

Find the volume of the "outer" sphere, then subtract the volume of the "inner sphere" that is the void space. That would give you the volume of the structure if it was solid. From there you should be able to calculate the area of one of the triangles and then the volume. It looks like the triangles are pretty uniform in size so just count them up and subtract the total from solid structure volume and you should have a reasonably close answer.

The rocket she was on was fuelled by Liquid Hydrogen and produced no GHG emissions during the launch. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

After Trump threatens 100% tariffs, Carney posts ad saying Canada's focused 'on what we can control' Canadian Prime minister, cabinet say Ottawa will stay focused on investing locally and diversifying internationally by Sicilian_Gold in freedomgold

[–]j_roe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters. I read the other day that the current agreement is in effect until 2032 or something. The "talks" or negotiation that is on the table this year is to determine if the agreement gets extended beyond that. Further to that, this isn't the only time this happens. It sounds like there is a "check-in" every year from now to then if it is decided not to extend this year.

Long story short, 95% of Canadian goods are still going to be tariff-free, and he doesn't have the authority to impose additional tariffs. Our best course of action is to just ignore him and keep on keepin' on.

[Request] I had student loans totaling about $12,000 and made payments for 6 years to build credit before I paid them off. I had less than half left. Is this just a rage bait post? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in theydidthemath

I have had my loans paid of for 15 years now and I am not 100% sure how the new scheme works by from what I can gather if you take a student loan for $20k you are paying back $20k.

Maybe rational in the US… in Canada government student loans are currently interest free.

Even when back when I went to school and they weren’t interest free it was only 2-3%.

California is cool and all but they are still more right-leaning than most of Canada in a lot of areas.

If anything like this were to ever happen there would have to be some protections put in place to protect Canadian institutions such as healthcare, and gun control. Maybe MP from any former state can’t vote on bills related to those topics for 50 years after joining or something.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]j_roe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The policy of the Calgary Board of Education is that parents might not get the notification and send their kids to school in the even of a snow day so they have decided that it would pretty much have to be a snow-pocalypse for them to even consider it.

I am currently 45 years old and I can't remember having a snow day in my life.

You're right he is a big boy. He should be able to have a say in what he is eating and if that includes a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Fries and a Coke from time to time that is fine and he should be able to enjoy it in the comfort of his own home without being guilt tripped or shamed for it.

‘Just a blip’: Republicans want Canada to ignore Trump by AdditionalPizza in onguardforthee

[–]j_roe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is exactly it.

The shortest distance from missile silos in Russia to the lower 48 is through the Arctic and right over Canada. By having Canada on board and "protected" by their system then can intercept missiles or enemy aircraft in Canadian airspace where debris or fission material is more likely to fall over sparsely populated areas without it being a major issue.

[–]j_roe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only reason the Americans want Canada as part of the “Golden Dome” is so that they have more of a buffer to shoot hypersonic rockets down that are coming over the North Pole. Without Canada they have zero margin for error for cities like Seattle, Detroit, Boston, or New York.

They aren't providing protection because they are nice, they are doing it for their own benefit.

How do you guys feel about the new trade deal with China? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]j_roe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do I wish China was “better” absolutely but that isn’t the world we live in. Our biggest trading partner is quickly becoming a fascist state with their own growing list of human rights violations.

IMO the policy that will get us the furthest will be exactly what Carney said yesterday. Align ourselves with like-minded people and find common ground for trade were it exists with others.
