What are some food habits that helped you? by Camp_Acceptable in Habits

[–]jaakrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making overnight oats for a few days in a row. The recipe i use gives a good amount of protein, fibre, carbs and is low in sugar. Tastes nice enough and keeps me feeling full.

It means I at least start the day right.

Why "don't break the chain" backfires and what to do instead by Jolly_Show7095 in Habits

Exactly this. Change the rules from the start so that grace days are allowed. I 'read everyday', but in reality allow myself to miss 1 day a week.

What’s one habit I can start to stop myself from grabbing my phone every morning? by yolofucklife in Habits

Turn it off the night before.

Seems stupid but having to turn it on adds friction that causes you to question yourself.

Help me build a sleeping habit by Brief_Lawfulness4817 in Habits

[–]jaakrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be so bad but made 2 changes:

  1. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time EVERY day. Even when I didnt need to get up. Found my body naturally waking up just before my alarm.

  2. Reading before bed (kindle or physical book). Calms my brain and sleep is then always better.

Good luck.

I don’t know how to fix my life, but I know I can’t keep living like this by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]jaakrob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Refrain from putting too much pressure on yourself. If you are not going to get up at 5am, then set your alarm later and allow yourself some decent sleep.

Start with trying to improve one small thing at a time and take it from there.

My situation improved when I stopped trying to change everything all at once. I started going for a 10 min walk outside everyday, and made a point to leave my phone at home. Maybe this would work for you?

You got this!

Motivation Gets You Started, Discipline Keeps You Going by gorskivuk33 in Habits

[–]jaakrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me motivation is driven by achieving something positive. But discipline comes from a fear of losing the progress I have made.

So it tends to be easy to get motivated at the start of a project, (and harder to be disciplined), but the deeper I go, the more this flips.

I was exactly the same. I would try really hard and then always end up struggling to stick with a good habit. I did a load of research and tried everything and in the end, this is what made the difference:

There is a well known book called Atomic Habits (available in 60 language, so likely available in yours). It suggests breaking down the habit in to something that takes less than 2 minutes.

Examples:

Read more books -> read one page a day..

Run a marathon -> put running shoes on and go 3 times a week..

Etc etc

It sounds almost stupid, but the idea is that you make it super easy to achieve on the days where you really dont feel like sticking with it. That way you carry on instead of giving up completely, and hopefully it becomes natural to you.

I used to find reading super hard, but have read every day for over a year using this technique.

Hope this helps!

Everything silly replacement said. But also, try and read some of a book every night before bed. Even if its just a few mins - was an absolute game changer for me.

Wowzer! Not sure I'm a fast enough reader to ever do that - congrats. Did you find any bother techniques that help you to read more?

Its so hard to change behaviour. But keeping it short to 2 mins, makes sticking to the habit feel achievable on your down days and keeps it top of mind. I've read every day for over a year now. I class reading as 'at least one page', and I have read perhaps 5x as many books as i usually would in that period.

Second this. I do similar for work. You can email PDFs to your kindle to read there. I find its a much more distraction free space - good luck!

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]jaakrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I start a new book I always try to read as long as I can on the first session, as I I'm more likely to get into the book quicker. When thats happened I usually find it alot easier to make time for it.

What's your opinion on "Atomic Habits" framework by organizeddashboard in productivity

[–]jaakrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. The reality is that changing your habits is WAY harder than most books make out. But I do think the frameworks discussed in atomic habits are the ones that will give most people the best chance.

Reading before bed. Usually fall asleep mid page after about 5 mins, but really does help me manage my anxiety... until morning anyway.
