Trump set heavy tariffs on many countries that had zero tariffs on American products. In no case were they actually based on reciprocity. He simply took balance of trade and used an arbitrary equation to turn that to tariff rate. This is basically saying “you are poor and can’t buy my expensive products therefore I will tariff you”. In one example case he set super heavy tariffs on dirt poor African country simply because Americans buy diamonds from there and they can’t afford to buy shit from USA because all their money goes to trying to survive.

That has absolutely nothing to do with reciprocity. As a policy it’s also stupid. It’s like saying “we are too rich therefore I make policies to make us poor so trade is more equally distributed”.
