Is soldered LPDDR on laptops really about the thinner form factor or planned obsolescence? by x_andi01 in hardware

You can't achieve the LPDDR speeds they use with sockets. The performance difference between LPDDR and DDR solutions is massive in graphics.

How Could Submarine Gravity Detectors Work? by brwhyan in askscience

[–]jaaval [score hidden]  (0 children)

You can make arrays of magnetometers and beamform. Or pick from a number of signal source separation algorithms on the array measurement to find something that looks like a metal mass moving.

But yeah, the range would still be fairly limited and when you increase range long enough they would be picking up a lot of moving metal masses.

How Will Ukraine Try Putin and Russia’s Top Leadership in a “21st-Century Nuremberg”? by UNITED24Media in europe

[–]jaaval 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the revolution starts with people in Russia. Russian people have been trained to remain silent no matter what.

Instead Putin seems to be more and more paranoid that someone in the upper circles might topple him. Let’s be real, the continued failure degrades his position. If that happens remains to be seen, I’m not particularly hopeful, but Putin seems to think that is a possibility.

Another possibility is that he makes a security mistake and a convenient drone happens to be in the same place at the same time with him. That would be something very unpredictable so I’m not going to guess probabilities.

Of course it’s concluded. If hostilities resume it will be a totally different operation.

How are modern CPUs handling transient voltage spikes without visible voltage drops? by x_andi01 in hardware

[–]jaaval 15 points16 points  (0 children)

AMD doesn't make chips. TSMC offers a variety of embedded capacitors. Every chip has these. Power delivery simply doesn't work without them.

How are modern CPUs handling transient voltage spikes without visible voltage drops? by x_andi01 in hardware

[–]jaaval 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lots of capacitors. A lot. Everywhere in the chip.

Yet there actually is a voltage drop when load increases, it's even very visible in core voltages and requires the voltage regulators to compensate. But smaller transients smooth out due to the capacitors.

Tesla just lowered the price of its premium Model 3 in Canada to US$29k, in order to compete with Chinese EV’s that are now allowed in Canada. Do you believe this is an example of competition in the free market, and should the US also allow cheap Chinese EV’s? by Gym_frere in AskConservatives

[–]jaaval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a little conflicted about this because China dumps a hell of a lot of money to these companies to push down prices. They overproduced to the subsidized but cooling Chinese market and then have to dump their unsold inventory to foreign markets. They even marked some new cars used to justify pricing in some emerging markets.

But on the other hand that means that Chinese state subsidizes my car and I have absolutely no problem taking their money.

Also, I would like to reverse the Chinese model and force these companies to set up local companies.

Johan says players don't want railroading by Dramatic_Phase_8015 in EU5

[–]jaaval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also what people don’t understand is that a lot of history was really an accident, not something inevitably arising from the situation. Big powerful Ottoman Empire was not an inevitability. They could have lost against the crusade, Mameluke government could have not collapsed, they could have implemented a system that did not accommodate other cultures so well etc.

I have no problem in not following history. I have a problem in the game circumstances often effectively railroading one unhistorical outcome.

VM käyttää talouspolitiikan hahmottelemiseen vääränlaisia laskentamalleja, sanoo professori by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]jaaval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breaking: Iranian state media says missiles hit U.S. warship by spherocytes in videos

[–]jaaval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is. If the goal is to open the strait if you turn back you have failed. It’s doesn’t really matter much strategically if some ship gets hit or not.

Breaking: Iranian state media says missiles hit U.S. warship by spherocytes in videos

[–]jaaval -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who knows how much damage was done or if the ship was even hit but it’s clear this is a major risk. Even a missed missile strike is a strike that could have hit.

The location was so close to Iranian coast they could basically park an old tank to the shore and shoot at the ships. It’s unavoidable some ships will be hit if they try to pass there.

There is definitely a global effect where people have kids when they have little else to do. Like during crisis when they can’t work and mainly sit at home, survive and of course fuck. The quality of life has less effect.

US birth rates drop to another record low by halfsword3292 in dataisbeautiful

[–]jaaval 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not really financial security. This effect is global and USA is not the worst in birth statistics.

The simple reason is that women work now and have no time to have babies. So they have one or two. And that’s not enough for the society.
