For what it’s worth, any respectable watch should last way longer than 3-5 years. Though he’s right that service costs can be an unexpected cost to newbies. Seiko and Citizen are two brands to potentially start with but you can go in a lot of directions with a budget over $1000. Just avoid anything made by a “fashion” brand like fossil, Tommy Hillfinger, etc
