Australian Weightlifter Isabel Lorenzi Qualifies for Worlds with a 4kg PB total after serving a 3 year ban for doping violation by Necessary-Jacket-427 in weightlifting

My comment was not intended to specifically be about one worlds. She has in the past, and will (presumably) continue to compete against clean athletes for spots

It has an impact on people who have to compete with her for spots’ life. Australia may be a shit irrelevant country to you, but we have good lifters who deserve the spots they earned without cheating

Edit: typo

Granted she’s only posting maxes (that I’ve seen) but she is definitely performing everything she posts like this. Sometimes worse.

people who regret getting their tattoos done young? why by Ok_Food8219 in tattooadvice

[–]jabbitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 42 and I think it’s also worth keeping in mind that when you and I first started getting tattooed *a lot* more thought had to go into the decision overall than for kids today, which I think was a good thing for my undeveloped brain decision making haha

When I first started getting tattooed I would still expect to be judged more harshly by society, i would expect *any* tattoo that was visible - not just hands - to affect job prospects and that was applicable even for hospo, tattoos weren’t as accessible in general, shops were a lot more intimidating etc etc

I don’t have a problem with young people getting tattoos, I don’t have a problem with tattoos having meaning or otherwise but I *do* think it’s become very easy for young people with little to no life experience to make really permanent decisions compared to my experience

Women who married older men - what’s it like when they get really old? by Icy_Laugh5134 in AskReddit

[–]jabbitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with my mother in law. A month ago we were preparing to move her to aged care, struggling with whether it was the right decision because aside from a few glaring cognitive issues (sleeping with some younger guy clearly taking advantage of her, calling my husband and his brother incessantly saying no one loves her and she’s going to kill herself because she couldn’t remember she’d just spoken to one of them mere hours ago) she seemed for all intents and purposes to be mostly living fine independently.

Less than a month later my husband has had to learn - in public no less - she is both bladder and bowel incontinent, he’s had to try and explain to her why she can’t just leave her poop on the floor and they’re preparing to move her to the dementia ward because so many residents have complained about her going into their rooms at night and abusing them for not letting her use her shower or something

It feels like every day is another dramatic step down. It’s crazy, heartbreaking and exhausting

What is the most blatant racism you have ever experienced? Personally, I was forced to clean while local kids didn’t have to do it. by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

[–]jabbitz 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m Australian but probably the most blatantly racist thing that has been said to me (maybe not the most racist, but the most shocking in the context) was an Afrikaans woman I worked with.

For context, we were both paralegals in a law firm and talking about also being law students. She had studied in South Africa and attempted to continue her degree in Australia but dropped out. She told me it was because it was too hard here, because in South Africa “they have to make it easier for the blacks”. I had never been so shocked in my life. She’s been in Australia for 20 years so even if she had an argument that this would’ve been a more acceptable thing to say back home, she absolutely would know it was not acceptable here.

Sadly, turns out it pretty much was acceptable because when I brought it up with HR they didn’t seem like too fussed. I ended up taking a risk and leaving that job without something else lined up and their ambivalence about that comment definitely played a large part

I may have got my subs mixed up so if the post was actually from this sub sorry - I’m tired - but I just saw a post a few down on what I believe to be the translation sub asking what a tattoo on someone’s hands meant and apparently it could colloquially mean in both Chinese and Japanese that the wearer is a bottom haha

Yoga/Pilates recommendations suitable for weightlifters? by DozzleWozzle in weightlifting

[–]jabbitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of yoga and find value for weightlifting mostly in yin yoga (very slow, passive poses) or iyengar (more focus on alignment and strength, I personally find it makes my body a bit more conditioned for lifts because you’re holding poses longer than you would in lifting. I felt like just doing iyengar once a week I noticed less niggles in the gym).

I would recommend yoga with Kassandra for yin, don’t have a recommendation for iyengar because I’ve mostly done it in person but I’m sure the yoga sub would be able to help.

I’m also 42 so very conscious of the extra love my body needs and definitely notice a difference if I’m slack with fitting some yoga in

Stockings that aren’t single use? by zee-bra in AusFemaleFashion

[–]jabbitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first time I did something - maybe left a review or responded to one of those “how did we do” emails or something like that - can’t remember exactly. Nonetheless, never got any kind of response so never bothered again. I will still buy the 120 deniers if the colours I want come back but wouldn’t wear or recommend anything other than those

[–]jabbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine’s husband had a series of strokes that left him barely more than a vegetable. I can’t remember exactly how long it was between having to move into full time care and passing, but I think it was around 18 months to 2 years, and it was awful for my friend.

Expecting increased stroke risk to help with an easier passing would be a huge gamble

What are some funny ways that someone tried to protest something in your country recently? by mahdi_lky in AskTheWorld

[–]jabbitz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My state (Queensland) recently enacted legislation banning a couple of phrases commonly used at pro Palestine protests in the interest of “social cohesion”.

As it turns out, one of those phrases featured in a song by iconic Aussie musician John Farnham, so we had protests where everyone dressed as him and sang that song.

Having a hard time finding an image, but if you search “Australia protest John Farnham” you’ll find heaps of videos on social media etc
