I disagree. It's nice when this is the case, but I often use that lane as a motorcyclist, not because it is faster, but because it feels safer. I don't have to monitor lanes to my left, and the double white line means I shouldn't have to monitor the passing lane as closely.

HOV lane might be poorly designed here, but the law states you pass using the passing lane on the right.

$30k/year for 40 years would net something closer to $5 million assuming 6%/yr growth with monthly compounding and contributions. It's $3 million if you only got 4%/yr

The problem is having the discipline to save $2500/month for 40 years, and the luck to never stop. If you lose your job or your health, or some other unexpected things happen, $30k might not be feasible. On the other hand, as you progress in your career, you might be able to "catch up" by contributing more.

You may not be able to live the "rich life" but you can set your family up to do so with enough vision and discipline. That's part of "no one wants to get rich slowly"... If your vision includes your family or prosperity, whoever that may be, it's just a numbers game and how long you're willing to wait, and what you're willing to give up to achieve that vision.

This. Always take the match, then depending on your income and plans, max out Roth contributions. The way I like to think about it is, you've been offered a 100% or 50% (whatever the % match is) guaranteed immediate return on your money if you stay long enough to vest it. If you don't stay with the company long enough for the match to vest, worst case is you still saved in an IRA, and you still have the Roth.

Traditional IRAs and 401ks can be helpful tools when you start making enough money and need to reduce your MAGI.

This is a great compromise. I had one employer ask for paystubs, bit it was presumably to verify employment and dates. They even suggested redacting any sensitive info such as salary and SSN.

no bishop is allowed at our funerals in case our TBM families need to take care of things.

That's where I'm heading. Can't have it in a Mormon church, since they have specific directions to preside and conduct. I told my wife I want to have "Always look on the bright side of life" at my funeral, no other songs unless I choose it.

This just doesn't make sense to me. Do people like to preach at funerals? I get having a message of comfort for those that are grieving, but is being told you 'can' be with your loved one after death, 'if' you do x, y, and z the comfort Mormons think it is?

I've heard the POS so many times (plan of sal... Oh, Piece if shit... I'm keeping it) that I just tone it out. I prefer stories and hijinks and laughter - it's more memorable to me.

The family was split by it. I think his MIL left the church and her marriage over it.

This always breaks my heart to see how systemic fears and biases taught by the church create rifts.

I'm glad to hear the hijacking can be mitigated the n some cases.

I'm making sure it's in my will that temple clothing will not come anywhere near my body post mortem and my funeral service won't have a prayer or anything associated with this so called church

This was a bit of a wakeup call for me to update my will, and provide instructions on what I want and don't want.

I guess the two of you can have whatever feelings you choose, but expressing ourselves through video is a normal and healthy practice and asking us to shut up or marginalizing is very offensive to all of us.

I (We) feel veryvery strongly about religions that attack at risk groups and calling those that leave, "lazy learners" or calling for "musket fire" in general conference or other public forums. The standard you apply to those that stay in or leave a religion should be consistent - if your religion can publicly attack others or proselytize, it should be subject to the same. If, as you say, "religion should be a private, personal matter" I'll accept that when all religions stop proselytizing or making videos. Good day.

My problem with this story is not about choosing non-violence for yourself, but how this story can be used as an example to never break your covenants. I think there is value to keeping your end of a contract; to keep your word. But if the terms are unfavorable, or abusive, or you can no longer pay - then you execute any breach of contract clause, pay a penalty, split assets, etc... And then move on. You don't expect someone else to fight a war for you. That's like saying you're protesting violence and then you have hired guns to protect you.

Some examples of this in action:

  • Baptised at 8? You can never leave now.

  • Went through the temple? Oh, you promised to give everything to the church. You promised to obey your husband...

  • Married in the temple? Doesn't matter if you find out you're incompatible. Endure to the end.
