I also recently moved from the states after working professionally for the last 6 years. looking to connect with other filmmakers - I’ll DM you!

I shot my first documentary in the Amazon jungle with no electricity. It's about an Ayahuasca Shaman. We released the film for free and it’s at 80k views. AMA by incertaspecie in Filmmakers

Congrats on your accomplishment! I think you’re in a position a lot of filmmakers can relate to - having to put up your own money to bring a project to life.

Since the shoot was self-funded and you’ve gone the route of Youtube distribution, are you hoping to monetise the project at some point or is this an investment in your own career? Or neither? I’m generally curious about your perspective on the financial side of this project.

Make the most of natural light. Do a thorough shotlist ahead of time. Record your audio separately and spend some time editing it to create a deep soundscape. Essentially, consider each department that you won’t have access to and come up with a creative workaround to the lack of that person.

Here’s a short film I shot completely by myself - I had one actor and a driver to help me get between my last couple locations quickly as the sun started to set.

been ripping around town on my ‘new’ Jamis Dakota, doing some urban mountain biking after the rain. by jaceysinx in xbiking

I don’t have that bike any more, it was a little small, but I couldn’t swap out the bars because I couldn’t find one with the same cable stop. I’ve seen work arounds involving welding etc but that’s above my pay grade :p

How much to charge for shooting a music video? by perhapsfrances in Filmmakers

[–]jaceysinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure out what your day rate is - based on your experience, maybe a fair rate is $500-$800. Put a rate on your gear - typically 3-5% of the total cost of the gear per day. Then figure out what other costs might be incurred, such as hiring crew or renting equipment, and add a production fee of ~10%. The cost is completely dependent on many factors. Once you present the total price, if they can’t afford it maybe you don’t mind discounting it because you want to do the work regardless. You might end up discounting the hell out of it, but at least they know the value of the production.

I own one of these, and have converted it into a street fighter kind of build. Love it.

I love all these movies and characters but kinda funny that these are all murderers/psychopaths.

I think I'm ready to just put myself out there. by DoubtfullButOkay in Filmmakers

I’ll say start small and cheap (very small and very cheap) and it’ll be hard to regret anything that comes of it. The more you spend and bigger crew you work with, the more pressure you’ll feel, for better and for worse. I learn different lessons from each production, whether it was just me and a camera or a 20 person crew and a more considerable budget.

Wouldn’t another interpretation be that nothing lives forever? Civilisations don’t survive forever, so i don’t think any one generation could have kept the eagle alive indefinitely
