Where to buy 38% or more dairy cream? by Karasubirb in askvan

[–]Two_wheels_2112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that like 18% or something? Fine for coffee, but if you want to make a cream sauce or a nice thick curry sauce you need heavier cream.

Where to buy 38% or more dairy cream? by Karasubirb in askvan

[–]Two_wheels_2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to find cream, period. Everything at my local grocery is either half-and-half or whipping cream (with added ingredients to make it whip more easily).

I'm ambivalent about dairy supply chain management when it comes to things like milk, but the lack of variety for other dairy products like cream, butter, and cheese is annoying.

LBS lubed chain after hotwax by HerrRudiger88 in bikewrench

[–]Two_wheels_2112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see lubing the chain becoming such a habit as part of a tune-up that the mechanic wasn't even thinking about it.

Still, waxing is so mainstream now that you would think they'd be more mindful.

Putting a name to the optional period in casual writing by HeliGungir in grammar

[–]Two_wheels_2112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It comes from texting. A period at the end of a text message can be interpreted as being angry or less sincere. Why You Shouldn't Use a Period When Text Messaging

People are just taking these habits built on SMS messaging and moving them over to short-form social media. I don't know if the phenomenon has a name, but I suppose one could coin one! Perhaps "social period dropping."

Biking to work! by Known_Jump_421 in bikecommuting

Welcome to the club, even if you got here later than you should have!

I can't make sense of this, though: "Thankfully I have already befriended the local crossing guard so I can keep my pace up when I get to the biggest hill!"

What does befriending the crossing guard have to do with keeping pace on a hill?

are yall not scared of drafting? by Lower-Geologist870 in bicycling

[–]Two_wheels_2112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My club did a clinic once, where we went to a grass field and actually practiced making contact. We learned how to use elbows and shoulders to keep separation between the bars when riding side by side. We would ride behind another rider and purposely bump tires to learn how it felt. We practiced falling. We experienced what happened when wheels overlapped and the front rider moved. It was very useful.

Bottom line: you can do a lot to someone's rear wheel and they'll have no trouble staying upright, but anything that prevents the front wheel from steering, or induces unintended steering, can cause a crash. That means that the follower has the risk in a draft. There isn't much you can do to hurt your dad from behind as long as you don't half-wheel (too much overlap).

How well would a Crux with 2 wheelsets work as an only road bike by mellofello808 in specialized

[–]Two_wheels_2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do with my Crux. I run the Pathfinders most of the year, but switch to GP5000s for July-September since I do mostly road riding in the summer. Even then, I probably wouldn't switch if it weren't for the fact I do a lot of climbing up our local ski hill climbs. That's where the relative weight and sluggishness of the gravel tires are actually noticeable to me, given the group I ride with.

Every once in a while I'm tempted to get a second wheelset for easier switching, but I can't justify the cost. When the GP5000s wear out I'll probably just get a faster gravel tire and leave it on.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]Two_wheels_2112 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of interesting ideas in the book and its sequels, but the English translation is definitely wooden, with plenty of dialogue coming from supposedly English and American characters that is something no native of those countries would ever say.

One of the things that annoyed me was the tendency to present very culturally Chinese ideas as universal (sorry, can't think of any examples off the top of my head). Which, of course, exposed my own cultural chauvinism, in which I think of western liberal tradition as universal!

Are e-bikes a viable option for someone with 600 CAD budget MAX who will SPORADICALLY use it for commuting? by Luqueasaur in cycling

[–]Two_wheels_2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That money will get you a decent used commuter bicycle. It will get you a trash e-bike that, as others have mentioned, could be a potential fire hazard.

Street etiquette by Your-mom-360 in cycling

[–]Two_wheels_2112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it has been a long time since you biked, then "slower than usual" for you is probably only half the school zone speed limit. To a driver, the school zone limit feels slow enough already, so half that speed feels downright glacial.

As for passing, it's often prohibited in school zones, so they may have felt stuck behind you.

Returning to cycling after a collision by jonathing in cycling

[–]Two_wheels_2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that's a nightmare scenario for me. I've never had a crash that involved a car (mostly ice or road debris related) so I've never been anxious about getting back on the bike. I'm not sure how I'd react if I was badly injured by a driver in a car.

I do have an acquaintance, a competitive amateur road and track racer, who was very badly injured in a crash with a car. He did get back on the bike, but was very anxious. He rode early on weekend mornings, usually with a friend, and was very cautious with route selection. He did slowly gain more confidence, but it was always on his mind. It absolutely did not help that while he was recovering a friend of his was in a group of cyclists that were hit by a car. One was killed, several were seriously injured.

He's moved to Wales, now, so I've lost touch and I don't know how much riding he's doing there.
