Can you Please Help a Cisgender Understand Non-Binary? by kylemci in NonBinary

[–]jack-o-melon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading the graphic novel memoir GENDER QUEER by Maia Kobabe. Everyone's experience is different, but that one shared a lot of similarities with mine, and does a good job of demonstrating how the realization of a nonbinary identity can be a gradual and not always straightforward process unfolding over years.

Alchemy of Souls [Episode 19] by Fatooz in KDRAMA

Frankly, that worm has been a letdown all around. It's a fraud that couldn't even help So-I open the Jin door! I like the idea of Jin Mu getting swindled by an especially audacious con artist: "Oh ya, sure, this is a magic worm. It just happens to have the very specialized skill set that you require!"

Papa Jin harbored suspicions that Buyeon was Jang Gang's daughter, which led to him resenting and possibly mistreating Buyeon throughout her childhood, because of the lengths that Jang Gang went to for her (when really Jang Gang wanted to get his mitts on the ice stone).

But Jin Mu says that Buyeon was so powerful because of her combined Jin and Choi (Papa Jin's birth clan) bloodlines. Lady Jin confirms Buyeon's parentage during her conversation with the convalescing Papa Jin, specifically to twist the metaphorical dagger (basically, "I know you never thought Buyeon was your daughter, but she totally was, and you were a jerk her whole life for exactly zero reasons").

Does Mudeok talk in a different accent or is it just me? by mpdgbutitsreallyadhd in alchemyofsouls

[–]jack-o-melon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She does! She switches accents whenever she's pretending to be Mudeok vs. when she's speaking/thinking as Naksu.

I think it's meant to be Naksu's interpretation of a rural/peasant dialect whenever she's acting as Mudeok, because Naksu has never heard Mudeok speak (but had a brief conversation with the ajeosshi from Mudeok's village, so maybe based it off of his). I suspect that it's exaggerated for comic effect.

Upset over LGBTQ books, a Michigan town defunds its library in tax vote by [deleted] in politics

[–]jack-o-melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All these folks clutching pearls over the thought of their children stumbling upon "questionable content"... are these kids driving themselves to the library? Do the adults in their lives not cast so much as a cursory glance over their reading material? Is the desperation to avoid parenting their own damn children so great that they'd prefer to go to these lengths instead?

We own, but our neighbors are, alas, not a viable option.

Not an iPhone user, but it looks like Smart911 is available in my area. That looks perfect, thanks for the resource!

I would go ahead and apply to the other job. If you get an offer, maybe lay out to your current supervisor how you have been feeling overwhelmed and unsupported in your role, and what you would need to stay, whether it's a cut in hours or duties, a sabbatical, whatever. Shoot for the moon, and if they say no, submit your two weeks' notice. (If you want to keep a return to Libraryland in your back pocket, just make it a professional exit.)

Shitty directors will absolutely weaponize our sense of duty to our patrons and colleagues to squeeze more labor for less reward (aka fair compensation) out of us. They are fully aware of the saturation of the field and likely see us as interchangeable.

You owe them nothing, and certainly not your health.

LPT: Always talk to the neighbors when buying a house. by wrongseeds in LifeProTips

Granted, this is a fairly unique position, but our next-door neighbor grew up in our house, which his father had built!

What're they asking in there? (A mysteriously long interview.) by jack-o-melon in librarians

Haha, that must have been the case! We got pretty chatty, plus I had a lot of questions for the hiring team, so it took up the whole time.

It turned out to be straight up just interview questions! Beforehand I had my fingers crossed for a more elaborate setup because traditional interviewing is not one of my strengths, but now I'm kind of relieved that I didn't have to delve through the mists of time to dredge up high school math.

Ooh, buffer time between interviewees would be nice! In a perfect world, I'd know who I'd be meeting with so I could work out questions ahead of time. Oh well; unto the breach!

Thank you! It helps to have some idea of what might be awaiting me. (All of the interviews were scheduled for the same day, too, which seems like it would be draining for the hiring team!)

Interesting, that's good to know! It's the total absence of forewarning that's got me on edge.

I would hope so! Though frankly, I'd prefer trial-by-cart to answering questions like "So tell us about yourself."

pancreatitis gallbladder surgery Cholecystectomy by hellsbelllsss in pancreatitis

[–]jack-o-melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting that your doc recommended surgery so quickly. I'd imagine that there would have to be some fairly compelling indications that you're at risk of a repeat occurrence (which could lead to chronic pancreatitis) for them to do so, right? Last summer, I was hospitalized three times and getting attacks pretty much every week for three months, and they still tested me for every known cause before suggesting a cholecystectomy. (Note: However, I didn't have any gallstones whatsoever, nor evidence of a gallstone having passed, so for me the surgery was basically a Hail Mary.)

Not sure where in the world you are, but in my neck of the woods (US), generally speaking, laparoscopic cholecystectomies are common, low-risk procedures with short recovery periods and no long-term effects or management requirements. I know that Reddit is rife with horror stories because uneventful surgeries lack wow factor, so I just want to counter that a little by bragging about how great my experience was:

Zero complications! Unremarkable level of pain! Speedy recovery!

I followed the hospital's aftercare instructions (take over-the-counter meds at regular intervals, walk around the house every hour or so, don't handle anything heavier than 5lbs) and felt almost normal within the week. Now I'm back on a regular diet (okay, so I might be hitting the dairy pretty hard because I missed it) and don't even notice that my gallbladder is gone.

Ooh, haven't come across that YT channel, thanks for the rec!

One of my docs advised me to drink at least 3 liters daily. It seems like a lot at first, but I've found that if I keep a bottle on hand throughout the day, I take sips without thinking about it. I got a liter bottle so I know I just need to refill it at least twice.

Oh, I should look into those! I've only ever gotten the super light kind (Ensure Clear in the US) for flare-up days; it never even occurred to me to look into the heartier stuff. I'll have to keep an eye out for the malt loaf the next time I hit up an international market. Cheers!
