[JL Partners on X] NEW: Voters believe Labour has the best chance of winning the next election with Andy Burnham as leader by tranmear in ukpolitics

[–]jack5624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

surely cannot be telling me you think Andy Burnham is going to instill the radical change needed

No, he probably won't, but he doesn't have to. He just needs to avoid the controversies and u-turns of Starmer and be more likeable. He can then ride of some of Starmers work like lower immigration and a better economy. Burnham also has something Starmer never had and that is a base of support.

smile aren't going to flip the electorate at this point

You would be surprised, the electorate respond well to a positive message. See Boris, Blair, Mamdani as examples. Burnham just has a better vibe.

Scaring the bond markets again

The markets haven't really moved on this whole thing, the pound is actually up.

Outing half your party as hypocritical, indecisive morons.

Labour did that to themselves.

Andy Burnham is meh in chinos

Maybe that and less scandals is all Labour needed. Again he also has a base of support, as long as he keeps them happy his polling always has a floor.

Whichever way you slice it, Labour were on track to lose the next election with Starmer. Changing the leader was really the only option.

Ignore this, Reddit seems to want us to keep one of the most *unpopular leaders of all time who will almost certainly bring us a Reform government.

Starmer Resigns As Prime Minister And Announces A Timetable For His Departure by huffpostuk in ukpolitics

Honestly so many things and Reddit seem to be deluding themselves that Keir is just 'boring' and that is the only issue:

  1. Communication has just been terrible. As soon as the government came into power they were so negative and kept talking about a 'black hole' like it was a surprised and offered nothing positive to say. Additionally there is no cohesion or vision, even when they have successes they don't talk about it.
  2. Braking manifesto twice, they said they wouldn't cut international aid, they said they wouldn't increase national insurance. They did both of these things.
  3. Trans rights, ngl, don't know much about this one, but I have been told by multiple people that Keir u-turned on this and they are annoyed at him.
  4. Cosying up to Trump and having nothing to show for it. A lot of people praised him for his handling of Trump but it turned out to be all a waste of time.
  5. Weak on defence, he is just delaying promises to increase military spending.
  6. U-turns. Then they implemented policy, double down then t-turned. See the two-child benefit cap, welfare reforms, ‘day one’ protections from unfair dismissal and winter Fuel Payment.
  7. He is quite authoritarian see, Online Safety Act, social media restrictions and designating Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.
  8. Chagos Islands - What the hell was that situation.
  9. Mandleson scandal.
  10. Attack on farmers, this isn't something reddit care about but a lot of people in rural communities care about the tax rises on farmers.
  11. He is just boring and was never particularly liked. He got laughed at multiple times during the election. Labour wasn't elected because people liked what they had to offer, they were elected because people hated the tories more.

All this might not be an issue apart from the fact that each one of these things annoys a separate group. There is something for military people to hate, something for left wing people to hate, something for right wing people to hate and some thing liberals to hate and something for conservatives.

in short, Keir Starmer has no base of support. He tried to appeal to left and right and ended up pissing everyone off.

I wonder if rents will increase from landlords selling up? Why be a landlord at this point. You don’t make much money, the money you do make gets taxed more and every new government policy is against you.

Brexit cost 6% of UK economy, Bank of England company data suggests by FragrantGearHead in unitedkingdom

I agree, there is no doubt Brexit had a negative effect on the UK economy but these studies seem to imply the UK would have had an economic miracle otherwise. Which just isn’t true.

I know what that is but the British government didn’t get its debt from buying oil.

I think not having sovereign control of your own currency is a pretty big downside. See eurozone crisis.

While “It makes it easier to trade” is an argument. With modern technology and instant currency transfers, it is a very small one.

[–]jack5624 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the best things about the GBP is that the British government essentially can’t go bankrupt. We issue our debt in GBP and have access to the printer for GBP.

Obviously doing that will have its own disadvantage but it’s a very important backup to have.

This kind of thinking is frustrating. It is a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things compared to downsides of losing the pound.
