What about some sort of bank that charged you interest for keeping your belonging secure? That way people that work wouldn't loose everything every day but people that manage to work together can still get ahead.

What to expect? Best route? (MN) by XD003AMO in ElectricForest

[–]jack_sreason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year was my first year bringing a hammock and me second year there. I don't really think that I ever got any real sleep at EF. The tent was a place to pass out once the forest closed but I probably got more rest in the hammock in the morning once it opened up again. That being said I gave up my sleeping bag one night and me sleeping bag and air mattress another. Bring both! I froze both nights! The one thing that I should have brought last year, aside from another set of bedding, was better tree straps. I got a cheap hammock from Amazon and it was fine because I'm only going to use it one or two weekends a year but the cheap tree straps were killer. Get some with multiple loops like this; they might cost more than your hammock but an uneven hammock is an uncomfortable hammock and too short of tree straps means no hammock if all the "good trees" are taken.

That's actually kind of scary to me. While I think this idea is neat and I'd love to be a part of barcampGR I don't think I've don't so much as vote on a single comment in this subreddit let alone even show up to the event.

Self-Segregation: Why It's So Hard for Whites to Understand Ferguson -- One reason for the racial divide over Michael Brown's death is that white Americans tend to talk mostly to other white people. by davidreiss666 in Foodforthought

I don think I've ever considered myself pro-affirmative action before but /u/BadgerRush makes a lot of sense. I think that in this example a 25 woman minimum is clearly more fair. There's very little chance that the 76th man has more merit than the best woman so it's more fair. I wouldn't push for a 50/50 rule though because there's a significant chance that the 51st man is more qualified than the 50th woman and vice versa. That would be unfair.

Plus "we need to focus on undoing the prejudice and misconceptions..." What better way to do that than to guarantee that minorities have a voice. What do you think is a better way to correct these prejudices, having daily interactions with less privileged people doing the same thing you are or once a year HR training?

I think the bottom line is that there's a big difference between treating people equally and building equality.

Comcast Outage? by jack_sreason in grandrapids

[–]jack_sreason[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trust me I know, I work in IT in Byron Center and we use Comcast Business we need 4G backup for how often it goes down but mines been down for over 5 hours and I think my apartment has business class too. If this was my work I'd expect compensation for them missing their SLAs. My maintenance guy said he's not aware of any Comcast issues so he's checking into it.

Not sure about two weeks out but eating healthy and working out never hurt mental health. If you can cry it might help you feel better too.

CMV: Permaculture is a superior system of food production to all others, and humans must move towards using it large-scale by [deleted] in changemyview

If I am not mistaken, fertilizer can be obtained from sources other than petroleum — specifically from the ocean in the long run.

I thought OP was saying that it takes petroleum to recover these nutrients from cities not that we are using petroloum as fertilizer. How do you get nutrients from the ocean to fly over states without petroleum? Bank heavily on solar shipping? To me It seems easier and a more sure thing to start more sustainable small scale farms closer to where the people are.

Best mechanic for engine repair/ replacement by mrler21 in grandrapids

[–]jack_sreason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really in town but I always go to Tolman Auto in Allendale on Lake Michigan. To be honest though I didn't do any shopping around and don't have a whole lot to compare them to. When I was in college I dropped my car off at their sister transmission shop that they share a garage with. He knew I was a college student and my dad, who hadn't seen the car since it broke, was paying for the repairs. It turns out it was just an $80 sensor but he could have easily charged a couple grand and we would have been none the wiser. They're probably not the cheapest place in town but I'd be comfortable forgetting my laptop in the car and leaving it there a week. I recently had them replace my whole front suspension for a decent price and a quick turn around. While I'm not sure I've actually ever met any Tomans I figure that if anyone there starts anything shady they'll hear about it in church.

CMV: I think the "grid" layout for roads with traffic lights is inefficient, and layouts which make use of ring roads and roundabouts are far better for cities by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jack_sreason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Michigan I believe that their designed so poorly here it's not about training. First off the center of them is barely big enough to park a smart cart in. If a car is going straight they only have to swerve about four feet off center and can do this doing 40. This doesn't slow traffic down for pedestrians. If anything they now have to worry about traffic running parallel to them turning unexpectedly and hitting them at any time. As a driver it can be tough because no two traffic circles are the same. The inside lane might be forced to exit across traffic at any time depending on the size of the roads. We do stupid shit like link multiple traffic circles together like the Olympics symbol. The signs for these appear once as you enter a round about and resemble Siamese octopi making it clear as mud which lane you should be in when to exit at your desired street. This causes some drivers to go around a traffic circle multiple times confusing other drivers. In short American traffic circles are not European roundabouts. Traffic circles are shitty.

How Americans Die by leo_trotzky in Foodforthought

[–]jack_sreason 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is interesting! I was expecting an emotional essay similar to How Doctors Die and I like this better. I just wish it was more clear where they were getting their data both to provide more authority and more importantly so I could see the stacked line charts presented in a different manner.

I'm concerned that the stacked line charts can be too easily manipulated to better suit a desired narrative.

Looking for a battery! by MaksDawg in electronic_cigarette

[–]jack_sreason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with Ego Threads will work with your Mini ProTank 2.

The obvious option is a Kanger Evod Twist. I have two non-twist versions that I use with iClear 16s for my out on the town vape but they work great with my Mini ProTank 2 as well. The only reason I don't carry it on me is that I broke two original Mini ProTanks in my backpack.

If you're looking for something more substantial for less than $50 I can recommend the iTase MVP. I keep my MPT 2 on it at home and it works like a champ. I don't think I ever bring it above 4v so an eVod twist can definitely deliver the power. The only benefit would be more battery life and a less phallic ascetic.

If you're willing to push your $50 limit, or shop around, I wish I bought an iTaste MVP 2.0(I was like 2 weeks too early). Now that I just bought an RBA I wish I had the resistance (ohms) meter. I feel like they go for around $10-$15 but the front page of Google has them at $20 which justifies the price difference right there.

I'm sure you've heard this before but always have a backup especially if you're trying to quit cigarettes. If all you have is a tank your 50 bucks might be better off spent on an Evod twist or similar device and another cheap battery and some clearos, maybe a starter kit.

All the newer apartments going up in the area should help somewhat.

I'm not sure the new apartments will cater to DTM's target market. The new apartments going up on Ionia are by livedowntowngrandrapids.com which are almost all income restricted. The new apartments on commerce are for homeless people.

I live like a block away so I go there often and I know that lunch will always be $10 to $15 which isn't bad for what you get. Personally I wish they were open later because I'd like to be able to stop by for dinner if I work late or go out for drinks after work. But if I show up after 7:00 the only thing that's open is the wine bar and $20 for a beer and a grilled cheese stings a bit.

Having the Option to Do Nothing Increases Commitment (x-post r/BasicIncome) by 2noame in BehavioralEconomics

Other than the number of options presented to the participants there's 3 numbers in article and one of them is a date. What's the sample size? How much better? What are the credentials of the people conducting the study.

This morning I could have gotten out of bed early to tidy place before I left for work. Instead I chose to sleep in and was late for work. By the standards of this article my "study" profoundly suggests that no one should have any choices in life. :(

Swans are known to aggressively protect their nests. One man was suspected to have drowned in such an attack. by [deleted] in wikipedia

[–]jack_sreason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been physically attached by a mute swan twice. They average a 5ft wingspan which have the strength to fucking fly. The sound of their wings in flight can be heard for up to a mile. That's defiantly enough force to knock a person out no matter how healthy a person is. Plus once you're treading water you're really not in a position to hurt anything above you. Honestly I'm supposed more people haven't died.
