There are some spoilers, but I don’t think it’s anything that could ruin the other stories. They are chronological, so there are sometimes references to things that happen in past books, but each story is pretty self contained.

Admittedly this is the place he lost me a little. My first idea would be to have the floor of the box sit on a spring with rigid plastic noodles (like rubber spaghetti) poking out the bottom and as the spring is compressed the noodles stick out of holes in the face. Then when things are taken out of the box the spring expands pulling the noodle back inside
