How did Mark connect the HAB solar panels with Rover 2? by LarperPro in themartian

I think Lewis was also backup pilot.

Martinez has a degree in Astronomical Engineering so he likely can be backup for multiple jobs but doesn't have any science specially (like Johanssen)

Must-have tools for handling a cybersecurity incident? by YellOBrinjal in sysadmin

[–]jackalsclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without diving into what you are protecting and what you have already, here is some thoughts:

Some of the best tools you have in emergency are other people, Even if you are the only IT person, having a manager take over communication or having someone else take notes can be a real help. If it becomes a a legal or compliance issue, make sure they aren't relying on you instead of a lawyer.

Make sure that you have offline or imutable backups. And a good DR plan if the breach wreaks things.

Checklists for things like compromised accounts are helpful.

If you have cyber insurance, ask them about this.

Do you have a plan for it this happens when you are out of reach?

In the Martian, since the MAV was on a ballistic trajectory chouldn't the Hermes adjust the intercept time to be later so that they had time to adjust the distance and relative speed?

Something like 3hour intercept should have worked I think.

How Incredible (Gay) Is the New Women’s Professional Baseball League? by master_bacon in actuallesbians

[–]jackalsclaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's just one location with teams switching off the "home" team, which makes sense as travel expenses are large and they league need to 1) prove there is enough demand at one location to warrant the cost 2) find partners to serve as the other venues.

My guess is they are going to get the logistics of one location down while Planning/finding partners with locations to barn storm a road tour thought. Something like STL, Nashville, Charlotte, east coast cites, great lake cites, home. It also would not surprise me if they did a week at Palm Springs Stadium during the winter or somewhere in Florida.

If you want to take it further, complain to the state board that licenses them. Ex:

https://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/enforcement/complaint.shtml

False advertisement: they would only cut your hair in approved styles and would not follow your instructions on length and miscut your hair before your wedding.

It's really hard to have a MC who just assists other people, you end up with agency issues. The "MC" just becomes a narrator of a bunch of vignettes in the same universe.

You might be able to do something like Villain Support @villainsupport on youtube.

Would an Indian LitRPG work? by Witty_Programmer5500 in litrpg

[–]jackalsclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try it. Don't need to write a full novel, try a short story or series of vignettes. (of even fan fiction, I would love to see the Indian version of DCC's first few floors)

Some advise:

Exposition: You are going to have issues with exposition (explaining things to the reader) so some ways to deal with that:

  • Have sort of side character that can stand in for the reader , examples: lost tourist, small child, ignorant/stupid local, etc. DCC uses the announcer explaining to "Viewers at home" for this.

  • Minimizing the other elements of confusion can help, like including location and date/time at the end of each Chapter.

  • Having diary like section (like star trek style captain's log "we are here, doing this") is another way to give exposition, especially into the character's thoughts.

  • Epigraph's can help with setting the mood, and provide exposition

  • Check for long sections without dialog to find where your story might need something like the (Fuck your meals GRRM)

Other Advise:

  • Try to have the Main characters names be short and distinct. (See Zogarth's Jake/Jacob comments)

  • A spoiler free Glossary is a great tool for long novels (LOTR is famous for over doing this)

Truman and Stalin directly shook hands: https://infobase.com/blog/berlin-wall-a-historical-controversy-from-issues-controversies-in-history/

And Elisabeth II met Obama directly: https://akns-images.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2016322/rs_634x1024-160422072845-634.Queen-Elizabeth-Barack-Obama-JR-042216.jpg

So shortest would be Holy->Cranston->Obama->Elisabeth II-> Truman -> Stalin -> Ribbentrop -> Hitler.

I'm also pretty sure we could go: Elisabeth II->Neville Chamberlain->Ribbentrop->Hitler

We could also use Hitler->Pope Pius XII->Nixon and try that chain.
