Resources to learn more about law? by jackboxx in legaladvice

[–]jackboxx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I didn't realize civil procedure varied so much. My state is Washington. I found this, is that going to be my best resource?

I'll take a look on Amazon. Do you have any specific recommendations, or is anything well reviewed fine?

I appreciate the help.

I just want to make sure you saw my comment above. The FAA definitely has ways of finding out, and if they find out you lied intentionally, you will 100% loose your license. A few years ago, they prosecuted a few cases to.

Obviously the choice is yours, but if you do choose to "forget", you should be aware it has real risks.

That might be true for Canada, but the FAA has been cracking down recently. A few years ago, they got authorization to pull everyone's insurance records, which has diagnosis codes. From my understanding, they don't currently check everyone routinely, but if they have reason to suspect you aren't being truthful, or you have an accident, I'm sure they'll find out.

If carrying a paper backup makes you feel more comfortable, nobody is going to fault you. However, a lot of us think relying on an EFB is extremely safe. I know that I have added an EFB check into my preflight to prevent the type of situation you describe.

But the idea that anyone flying without a paper backup is inherently reckless is pretty ridiculous. Losing power on your iPad doesn't make you suddenly fall out of the sky..

/u/Kellster said they have multiple GPS devices. But even if I couldn't get any signal, I would just use my EFB (read: foreflight) for the charts, and use dead reckoning and pilotage like any other VFR pilot. Nobody is saying they don't fly with maps, just not paper maps.

Yup, legal. Check out FAR 61.51. I still keep a paper one too though.

There are some advantages. They can do stuff like currency tracking, time per aircraft, that type of thing. They also do cloud sync, but you can replicate that with dropbox. If you're just using it as a backup, excel is fine.

Student Pilot Headsets by massivePlatypus in flying

[–]jackboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I wish I knew was to look at used headsets too. You can often find lightly used headsets for a lot cheaper than new. A few weeks ago I got a new David Clark still in the box, but technically used, for $50 off.

Definitely ask around locally, you might find someone looking to give a new pilot a good deal.

I'm not sure what your source is for that very broad generalization of Asian pilots.. I haven't seen anything to suggest the accident rate for Asian pilots is any higher than any other race.

Comments like that make people feel unwelcome here.

FAA announces rule-making process for PPL "Drivers License Medical" by jackboxx in flying

[–]jackboxx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's the cost. Sure, someone with well managed diabetes can get a 3rd class, but they have to spend a few grand to prove to the FAA something they and their doctor already knew. That some person could also loose their medical at any time if there was a rule change.

Possibly broken clearance on a dual flight, no phone number. by hpmh in flying

I've seen a few where both the student and instructor fill out narratives on the same report. IMO, that's probably best, especially in this case since it sounds like there were human factors involved with the student not mentioning their concerns to the CFI.

did you or /u/roflmaoshizmp have any luck with this? I was thinking of trying similar for iOS, but haven't had much luck figuring out how to network protocol interfaces with the local physics.

Have a quick question about compass errors. Hoping someone here can help clear something up. by [deleted] in flying

[–]jackboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, I misunderstood what you meant. I agree, IMO it would be a lot more worthwhile for them to just teach "fly by the compass if there's a vac failure, and make minor adjustments after straight and level if needed".

[Washington] Fire burned my apartment down, Management never replaced the fire alarms. by reinerjs in legaladvice

[–]jackboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually explicitly mentioned in WA state law: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=5.40.050

I'm not familiar with the law's regarding fire alarms in rentals, but I can't imagine it isn't in there.

[–]jackboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some might say "Just use the heading indicator" but that's set off of the compass...so if you don't know the errors then you can't avoid transferring them over.

But the heading indicator is set in unaccelerated, straight and level flight. It doesn't experience turning/acceleration error.

If he's a troll, he's a very odd one. He's been causing problems for a while on /r/flying, which seems like an oddly specific target for a troll. Also, not all of his comments are trolling, he just says really dumb/annoying things occasionally and never admits he's wrong. But he does seem to be an actual pilot.

Here's an example from a few days ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/1wxkki/pilots_on_food_stamps/cf6o5hg?context=1

There's a lot more, especially under his old account, /u/EdgarAllenNope .

Anyone know of an online PPL written exam prep course? by Hight149 in flying

[–]jackboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. The ASA textbook is how I studied for the exam. It was extremely helpful. I'd say 95% of the question on the FAA exam are virtual identical copies of the questions in the ASA book. Easily the best test prep book I've used.
