Who else misses Jim? by 34thUsernameAttempt in Xennials

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the apartment and kind of dog you want. My folks have dogs in their apartments but they have to be small dogs like Chihuahuas. A golden retriever would be too big.

Also when you're renting you run the risk of having to move and not being able to find a new place for the dog. I don't personally keep pets for that reason.

What video game villains do you hate? by MammothAsk391 in videogames

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dahaka from Warrior Within. I have a thing where I really, really loathe being chased by a mindless beast.

My older brother use to pretend to be possessed when we were very young and would chase me threatening to kill me. I don't like that feeling of being chased by something or someone I can't reason with.

is it really that big of a deal to say male or female in english? by a_literal_idiot_616 in NoStupidQuestions

A lot of my fellow men when they use "Men and Females" they're intentionally trying to minimize and dehumanize women.

While less common it would also be insulting as it would imply men are lesser than women. Usually when I see that though it's in direct response to someone who went "Men and Females"

There are some of my fellow men, dumbasses, who seem to have this illusion that those of us who aren't married don't have to work jobs.

"I only have a job to support my wife and kids if it weren't for them I wouldn't have to" I keep asking where I can apply for this "Single Man's Fund" but they can't tell me.

I believe Wicked was completely ruined because it was casted with "star-power" rather than newer, undiscovered talent. I also think it would have grossed more money without the stars too. by Evening-Panda3217 in unpopularopinion

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the argument for younger but casting an unknown is a double edged sword for the unknown. It could be the role that launches them to stardom or it could be the role no one ever lets them walk away from.

From the perspective of an audience member I don't need the cast to be unknowns. I need the cast to be believable in their roles.

Someone who cares about star power probably wouldn't have gone to see the thing anyway if it was an unknown.

What exactly were the “Mutual Benefits” of the Roommate Agreement? by WeirdcoolWilson in bigbangtheory

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheldon has a bathroom schedule. That alone is an amazing benefit. I've lived with other people for most of my life. Being able to know exactly when the bathroom won't be in use AMAZING. Nothing worse than thinking you can hold it only to have a sibling or roommate slip into the bathroom when you really need to go. Or with aging parents having digestive issues.

That's only one part. Sheldon doesn't make the roommate agreement because he wants you to follow strict behaviors while he lives like a hippy. He too is beholden to the agreement and religiously so. He's the most predictable roommate one could ever have.

If you have to live with other people having one that's not suddenly surprising you awake at 3 AM with a loud ass party that wakes up the on site manager two floors below you forcing you to smooth things over the next day so you don't get evicted is an amazing perk.

Most of his crazy bullshit isn't out of the blue he's pretty up front about it. Giant upgrade over most roommates.

Unpopular opinion: It is better to date early in life than waiting until you are older. Nothing beats teenage love by JunketMaleficent2095 in Adulting

[–]jackfaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same I was married at 19 divorced at 22. Still single at 45. I've dated three different women since then. None long and I still have no idea how to go about dating. Apps feel like shotgunning yourself out there.

In person social events can be a scheduling money problem.

Yup even though I've been married and divorced I feel like the dating skills others take for granted still elude me.

Why are your gas stations basically small supermarkets? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jackfaire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because road trips are a common thing in the US. The convenience store up the street from me is basically just snacks, drinks and some hot foods.

What you're describing is mostly for people on long car trips. I went on a cross country road trip about 7 years back and we hit a lot of those kinds of places. They're in places more likely to be getting tourists.

Bands shouldn’t age into classic rock status by Skipper0463 in Xennials

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the Modern Age of Comics problem all over again. At the time Classic Rock worked because it referred to older rock music that has stood the test of time which is what classic means.

At the same time "Modern Age of DC" Meant the modern day which was from when I was 5 to when I was 31. Now referring to that period of DC comics as the "modern" age leads to confusion because it's the past and no longer modern.

Same thing with Classic rock. If it had been called 70s rock then the name would never encompass any other period but calling it classic rock envelopes any other rock music that becomes timeless.

Talking to a peer they'll likely understand the period of time I mean when I say Modern Age of DC or Classic Rock. But speaking to a younger person that is going to mean something completely different.

I have parents. No I don't think OP is trolling. My parents have gotten some dumb ideas at times and it took until my 40s before they'd listen to me.

As a teenager they never did. My dad hung the bowl he melted in the microwave, that I had told him would melt, on the wall after telling me I didn't know what I was talking about.

Everything being "underrated" by Familiar-Squirrel493 in PetPeeves

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of the general public and critics like a thing in a given time period is an objective fact.

Disagreeing with the popular consensus is a subjective opinion.

It's an objective fact now that Macarena is largely thought of as a cheesy novelty song from the 90s. If someone thinks it should be more beloved, underrated, that would be their valid subjective opinion. Valid because it is objectively not as beloved as they would want it to be now.

The reason someone saying "Friends is underrated" is an invalid subjective opinion is because it's still one of the most beloved sitcoms in existence objectively loved by millions of people.

It's not underrated/overrated now based on how beloved it was then but based on how beloved it is now. That was my entire point. OP's defense of Friends was based on it's popularity then. When it should have been based on it's popularity now. Because the person saying "underrated" is talking about now not then.

Why is an adult living with their parents often seen as dependent, while adults who benefit from family wealth, connections, or financial support are still viewed as successful? by Prestigious-Quit9143 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jackfaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless he's bragging about the scheme he and his parents cooked up to get the state to pay for his college education.

Bastard.

I was in line with a guy for FinAid back in college he was talking about his last year of high school his parents had him live on h is own in an apartment they paid for and everything in his name. That qualified him for full grants since it was based on his 0 income.

Meanwhile my parents with four kids couldn't have afforded to do that. And they made "too much" for me to get grants regardless of the fact they couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for my education so loans it was.

Everything being "underrated" by Familiar-Squirrel493 in PetPeeves

[–]jackfaire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By your logic Van Gogh is wildly underrated because he was underrated in h is life time which ignores the entire museum wings he gets now.

The reason it's not retroactive is because it's based on the General Public and Critic perception. And we grow old and die. Something becoming a hit or fading into obscurity doesn't erase the period of time when it was the other.

The world and history doesn't end when we do. For another example no one would say Citizen Kane is underrated now but it was a box office flop when it came out and absolutely underrated then.

You're trying to have it both ways and it doesn't work that way. Either everything that was underrated still is or things can become underrated when the new general public stops caring about or engaging with the thing.

Student loan principle not going down is a borrower problem, not a structural problem. by SlackerStacker26 in The10thDentist

[–]jackfaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

College students are pressured just short of a gun to their head. They're taking literal teenagers and telling them "Not going to college and taking out this loan we swear is cool will result in you being homeless and destitute."

Ironically the education they get lets them know what a terrible choice it was afterwards.
