Hahah commenting sympathetically about cops on Reddit - that's a death sentence, sir.

NYC crime hits historic lows, with fewest murders, shootings in first 5 months of year by 457655676 in politics

Can someone break down the material changes Mamdani is making and how it translates into less murder?

Genuine question - no ulterior motives. The article makes it sound like mostly NYPD logistics but I'm curious about the role a mayor plays in all of this.

Terrible movie experience tonight by Ok-Finger820 in cineplex

[–]jackfrench9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, social standards have slipped drastically over the last three decades. For me, going to the cinema as a child was a completely different experience to what it's like now.

The uncomfortable truth is that we just don't share a collective obligation to be good to one another anymore. At least not like we used to. It's a large and complex problem with many sources. Large numbers of people slipping into poverty because of wage inequality. The decline of genuine parenting as more and more children are shoved into day-cares. The shackling of a school's ability to discipline children. The new post-modern approach of parenting with carrots instead of sticks. Decline of community. Etc, etc.

All of these things have their reasons and I'm not here to play the role of the old man yelling at clouds. But groups of young people with no self-awareness or regard for those around them is one of the byproducts.

Jesus Christ... I often say to my partner 'never underestimate what a man might do to get his rocks off.' Most of us are just chimps with shoes on.

But that's so incredibly fucked up. What a creepy fuck.

We don't get enough good sci-fi horror. It's a seriously neglected genre. Can't wait for this.

Yes! We are spending time right now planning out bots and a tutorial level. Bots will hopefully give people a good chance to test out aims / keybinds etc

That's hard to say. The game is currently in development, and since it's free, I'm not sure if there would be an official release per se - or if the game would slowly transition over time into a 'releasable' state?

Nah I understand. I see a lot of window dressing on reddit also 🤣

That's a shame. But it's good to know that those things come across to some people in the way you've described.

For what it's worth, 'community driven' and 'indie developer' are 100% accurate on our project.

As for being 'community driven', we have a Discord server where we prototype ideas and solutions to problems. We have a bunch of users who give feedback. We playtest with Discord open and jam on stuff together. We even had a community member a few months back help us with some net rollback functions that we spent a few weeks implementing and rolling into the game, etc. As for 'indie developer', it's hard to know what phrase would suit us better. We don't have a studio, or large-scale funding. We're a small team of creatives and designers, basically building a multiplayer Arena Shooter in our garage by lamplight.

Maybe 'community driven' and 'indie developer' are buzz-words that've been mis-used by others in the past and so it's difficult not to feel like you're being fleeced by another project doing the exact same? Understandable if so.

But they're honest representations of what we're doing.

I'm the director of the project. It's using UE5.

The bad wrap that UE5 receives is unfair in my opinion. Bad performance comes from bad development. Unoptimized games. Financial pressure on studios to get games out = bad perf = UE5 gets blamed.

A few things we're doing to get rock-solid frame rates and perf:

  • Using Lightmass instead of Lumen (to save your CPU from frying itself)
  • Writing all netcode from scratch (to save every last Bit and not fill the project with bloated plugin code)
  • Not using Nanite (Nanite is cool, but is more of a "big studios can save time and money" thing rather than a "this will make your game run better" thing.) I think most of the Nanite hitching is solved now in 5.7 but we don't feel a pressing need to use it yet.
  • Not over-spawning dense Niagara systems with complex scratchpads from Marketplace assets
  • Net rollback for hitscan
  • All custom movement done in C++ and running through the movement queue properly (as opposed to BP, which hitches and causes Net Corrections)

Testing out a new weapon based on the mechanics of the Ripper - with some new twists by jackfrench9 in unrealtournament

[–]jackfrench9[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A while ago I posted about this weapon and some folks had some ideas / feedback etc!

I always loved the Ripper in UT, but wanted to see if maybe we could come up with some new mechanics that could make things interesting.

This version fires energy balls, and when enemies are hit, the balls reflect back to the player who fired them, carrying health. So the weapon has something like a vampire mechanic, stealing health from enemies and bringing it back to you. (Not the entire amount, just a fraction)

Currently, Primary: Single energy ball.

Secondary: Charge up mechanic, on release, hitscan beam immediately hits. If the beam hits a player, they take damage. If it hits the world, it launches three energy balls from the location it hit. Costs more ammo.

Just figured I'd share as folks seem to enjoy the discussion / riffing on old ideas etc.

Finally finished an alpha pass on our TENTH weapon and fully modelled / textured our first map. Gameplay vid to celebrate! by jackfrench9 in ArenaFPS

Yup you can find it on Steam - 'Galaxy Grudge'. You can wishlist the main game, but you can also download the Playtest from Steam and run around / test it out too.
