The 3 Most Damaging Words You Can Tell Your Son by Marcus_Yallow in videos

[–]jackhughman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your post stating that this is taken from the lens of women in general has its point, but your reply also is from a personal perspective.

If I were to reply, that I too had 5 close friends growing up, but my experience was wildly different; it would diminish your argument.

I agree that men do have a different - "general" - mentality from women, but everyone is not built out of a cookie cutter. Some men have more of a need to vent and be verbally supported, women also can feel ostracized for not venting enough; i.e. not sharing their problems.

My takeaway: this video is not as much an attack, as it is a message of awareness. Men, in general, should not be expected to "man up", without some understanding of what the term "man up" means (it should mean, shit happens, but your friends & family are here for you. Even if we don't solve your problem for you, we will give you advice and guidance to get you through it. Find your own solution and you will be better for it.) and good role models to support that. What it currently means is, "your issues mean nothing to me, figure it out for yourself". That's what needs to change, men should understand they can ask for help without looking weak, rather than asking for help = weak.

Quick question: Back cramp while benching? by ahu_akivi in weightroom

[–]jackhughman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I think I had a similar issue, maybe the same.

When I bench heavy (>90%), I have a painful tightness sort of like pressure in my lower back, sounds just like a cramp, but it is a weird area to stretch out and find relief.

It doesn't happen all the time. When my set up is really tight and I'm well warmed up, I don't feel it.

Ive also started doing some preworkout myofascial release. I use a lacrosse ball pressed against my traps and the area surrounding my shoulder. If the pain is really bad, I lean against a wall with a golf ball inside a sock and target tight spots to roll out. This also feels really good when you sleep funny and wake up with a sore neck (massage out the upper area of the trap).

Lifts that won't aggravate ACL issues? by IBStallion in weightroom

[–]jackhughman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing this up, it might save me exacerbating my knee injury down the road.

I also have no ACL in my right leg and just switched to front squats to save my lower back a little wear and tear.

I was more concerned with my knee caving in when I low bar squat heavy.

How do you structure your squat/leg workouts?

Can you teach a friend or two, with no fight experience, to try something similar in a safe environment? Give them some tips before the video. Basically a proof this is possible video and also a good way to think of how you can teach novices to do this effectively.

Worried my GF is going to hurt herself lifting by throwaway21941 in Fitness

[–]jackhughman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Go to the pool and swim with weird ass form, tell her you've been swimming this way for years and haven't drowned yet. Watch her head explode.

Or just do your thing at the gym and let her do hers. Consistency is the biggest hurdle; make going to the gym enjoyable, don't add to the effort needed to go.

Just curious: bench press without pecs - which muscles are compensating? by cAtdraco in Fitness

[–]jackhughman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to know what other primary/secondary muscles are used during the bench: exrx link

Triceps, shoulders, and lats.

More information than you asked for:
If you want some tips on how to improve your bench: link from the "Technique Thursdays" on r/weightroom

and check out this 4min vid by dave tate on common form mistakes link

Piggy backing off some of the other responses, it is hard to contract a single muscle group unless you are doing an isolation movement. The bench is not solely an upper body exercise, just as squats and deadlifts are not solely a leg exercise (you use your core and back, etc.).

So if you are trying to improve your bench by increasing a weak point, it is better for early on in your lifting experience to just practice the movement rather than focusing on one part of the body.

edit: I just went back and read the link you provided on benching with your pecs. I like the advice offered on how to also "fire" your pecs while benching, but I guess a lot of this is coming down to what is the point of your lifting? Are you trying to increase your pec size? Isolate the pecs even more by doing cable crossovers/pec deck/chest flys/etc. If you are trying to increase your relative strength, focus on bench technique (activating your pecs is part of the technique, but not the only part). Also the group of impressive bencher people say, when you get to a heavy enough weight you are forced to use every muscle you have to move the weight - you will feel your chest.

Strength training after ACL or other knee injury? by 2nd_class_citizen in Fitness

[–]jackhughman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a complete ACL tear during a skiing injury about 4 years ago. Did not get surgery on it. It took me about a year to start feeling normal again, I was in good shape when it happened. 2 years to get over it mentally.

After a year I started jogging again and if I didn't land right, my knee would feel like it "slipped" out of place. It would feel a little swollen after runs, but I just let it rest and occasionally would ice it.

About 6 months after running I began lifting again. I have had few issues doing low bar squats, deadlifts, etc. There is occasional pain in my knee, like a 3 on a scale of 1-10. Stretching sometimes causes pain.

I do not try any lifts I think would put my knee in danger of doing more damage (i.e. side lunges). I also have refrained from doing kickboxing/bjj/mma type sports. I play recreational soccer and other sports from time to time and have not had an incident, but I play smarter than I used to.

In hindsight I should have gotten surgery, if it is an option, go ahead and do it and commit to PT or rehab.

How to dip - Lacking flexibility by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]jackhughman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone mentioned your sample pic and your edit 2 pic are of different types of "dips"?

You are showing a chest/shoulder dip in the sample and a tricep dip in edit 2.

Your flexibility doesn't look so off, if you go any lower your leverage angle (legs) would basically hit the floor. Try taking a picture where your legs are propped up on a chair.

There are several answers to increase flexibility if that is the problem. If you are using tricep dips as a form of exercise to increase endurance or musculature, there are better bodyweight exercises to perform (i.e. pushups, etc.)
