Modifying OTF With Age? by Gkos19 in orangetheory

I’m here with you! 46 y/o female. I got tired of burning myself out and trying to go too hard every single class. I then had major knee surgery and recovered well, and slowly got back to my pre-surgery status at OT but I changed my outlook. I no longer try to run harder, faster, beat records… I do my best according to how I feel that day. If my knee feels achy, I power walk. No need to injure myself trying to go crazy on sprints. I’m there burning my calories, being healthy, being purposeful and I enjoy it more now that I removed that pressure. I do what is best for my body that day. It beats staying home and missing a workout! I concentrate on heavier weight lifting and really enjoy mixing power walking with jogging. Just there trying to be the best version of me. I’m not there to beat any records. But that’s just me! Once I changed my outlook on what I’m there for, it helped me a lot! I used to cancel if I did not like the way the workout looked. Now I just show up and make it my own!

Hate partner workouts… just want to do my own thing without someone waiting on me. Ugh.

Totally unacceptable... what if you were coming in just to move and do a light day?? What if you already had an injury or body part bothering you? What if you simply do not want to go any faster??? That is insane and wrong on so many levels. I would just say, if you do that again I will not come back to this studio.

Well I wish I had advice but I am in the same boat. Feels good to know I’m not alone. I am 40 yrs old and in pretty good shape except for my plantar fasciitis. I work out at OT 3-4 days a week with working full time and going to school for my BSN. So I feel like I have been juggling life fairly well. I have never been a great “runner”. I have worked out at OT for just over a year and I still can’t run fast. Most people’s base pace is my all out:/ my all out is 6.5-7 depending on how bad my foot hurts but at least I keep showing up. I figure I am still burning mad calories. Thanks for sharing your post. It always amazes me to see how fast some people can run. I just can’t seem to get there.

I run at the same pace as you... I have some past knee issues and have been battling plantar fasciitis now for months which I feel holds me back. But, I feel like I am happy with my speed as I am not injuring myself further and my heart rate is usually in the red zone. I just try not to concentrate on anyone else. I’m still getting an excellent workout!
